Lizard Squad member convicted for Christmas attacks on PSN, Xbox Live

A Finnish teenager who claimed responsibility for the cyberattack that brought down Xbox Live and PlayStation Network last year has been convicted of more than 50,000 instances of cybercrime.

Julius “zeekill” Kivimaki, 17, was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence and was “ordered to fight against cybercrime,” according to Finnish media. He will not go to prison.

The Daily Dot spoke to a victim of Kivimaki's online harrassment, who said he was "absolutely disgusted by the ruling." The victim, an American, said Kivimaki called in false threats that sent American law enforcement to his home, and demanded the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation step in.

That's it???

EDIT: It appears he might not have been actually sentenced for the Christmas attacks (yet), but sentenced for crimes he committed prior. There are conflicting reports on this. He just so happens to be one of the Lizard Squad members who took part in the Christmas attacks.

EDIT #2: Kotaku is also reporting on this, and they are not directly linking his sentence to the Christmas attacks.

I guess since no one was actually hurt, they were lenient on the sentencing. Or maybe they just don't take video games seriously. Who knows.

At least this little snot got something for what he did.

Wish the penalty was stiffer, at least the protracted legal battle probably bankrupted him.

It's a Christmas miracle!

While the DDOS may have been expensive to solve and inconvenienced a lot of people, there's really no way that a private citizen could compensate everyone in full. And it's not like it's a threat to anyone's safety, so I don't think an enormous sentence is appropriate.

DIdn't notice that it was a suspended sentence. Lame.

What a joke of a justice system.

I don't even really care that people couldn't play video games, this was just mean-spirited towards people who work retail.

should have killed the kid and displayed his corpse for all to see.
No but he should have been locked up for at least 5-8 years

All this weak sentence shows is that you can do whatever you want as long as you don't get tried in the United states

Weak ass punishment... Yeah he's just a kid, but a stiffer sentence would have deterred these other dipshits from following in his footsteps...

If they know that the worse that can happen to them is time out, why would they stop?...

well if anyone was contemplating the repercussions of getting involved with DDOSing giant corporations and impacting millions of users, this shows that its not all that bad.

Might as well have done nothing. He'll do it again in the future, no doubt. Except this time he'll be far more ruthless about it.

In the end, all he did was inconvenience some gamers. Lets not go nuts. Having said that, the punishment should have been something that would actually deter him from becoming a recidivist.

A fine that would take him years and years to pay would hurt him more. Especially at 17. 30K fine would have stung.

Strange to see the posts hoping he'd get a long prison sentence or some other absurd punishment.

The ideal punishment would be house arrest with no internet or even computer access.
