Man, I didn't expect to like this show so much, really enjoying it so far.

Tonight's was like wishing you hadn't already read ASOIAF when you watch Game of Thrones, except with Christopher Eccleston's accent. (Great episode.)

Everybody's an asshole.

Also, "hey, guys, guys! cancer! coma! catatonia! misery! am I deep yet?"

I watched the premiere the other day and though it was weird as hell, but enjoyable. I'll probably try to catch up on the last two episodes some time this week.

Just finished watching Ep. 2 and 3. Episode 2 was disappointing compared to the pilot (lol missing bagel) and 3 was a notch better than both (maybe because it was a single-character episode?), but still subpar. The attack after leaving the casino, being unconscious for days rather than just a few hours, the not-a-cult being the buyer, etc. were all pretty predictable "surprises."

Edit: my very out-there theory thus far is that the missing people aren't really gone, but rather "misplaced" or even changed. My first guess based on the first episode was that they were transferred to the dogs's bodies, but a lot of other things need to be confirmed before that theory even begins to make sense. The hilariously bad bagel scene I think is an additional hint. The bagel didn't really vanish, it just got lost (and changed, in this case charred :p). Book spoiler:
I know someone who read the book mentioned that the it never reveals what happened to them, but it's still fun to speculate.

Great episode. One of the best in 2014. So well crafted and confident in the story it wanted to tell. It was like one of the standout, top-notch flashback episodes of Lost.

Edit:

That casino needs some security

This would be a legitimate worry of mine. I win over 100,000 US DOLLARS and I'm expected to walk to my car alone? What's the security protocol at Casinos?

If someone wanted to make "Walkabout" again, that was probably it.

There's probably an actual security escort but for the purposes of what needed to happen...

I hope the show does these single character-focused episodes on a regular basis.

I think it's a far more compelling format than the more traditional setup used in the first two eps.

I'm kind of worried that the Garveys are ultimately going to hold this show back.

Specifically, I'm concerned that this is going to be a show filled with super-compelling secondary characters that swirl around a tedious and comparatively uninteresting family.

It's still really early, obviously, but the stark difference in quality between the first two eps and the third has me worried about the overall structure of the show. Again, more character-focused eps like 3, and fewer eps like 1 and 2. That will make me happy.

While I think the first episode had plenty of promise, the second and third have just been really weak. I'm getting pretty concerned.

Good review. What were the "two boats and a helicopter" of this episode anyway?

It's a reference to an old story where a flood is slowly engulfing a man's house. 3 people come by (2 in boats, 1 in a helicopter), offering to rescue him, and each time he declines saying that God will save him. He drowns, goes to heaven, and asks God why he didn't save him. God replies "well, I sent you two boats and a helicopter, why didn't you take them?"

Funny, that story is told in The West Wing, and Donna was his wife.

Yeah thanks. I got that from the quoted review.

My question was really: what does everyone think was the analog of the "2 in boats and 1 in a helicopter" in this "the Leftovers" episode?

Duh, totally misread, sorry.

Not sure there were specifically three times Matt could have saved himself and the church, vs. the title being a general statement on missing the forest for the trees.

Just finished watching it and man, I'm still picking up my jaw. What a performance by Eccleston. Just phenomenal. The entire episode was just so damn good.

Did anyone else stick around to watch the preview?
The season looks like it's about to ramp up big time. I'm curious to see what the connection is between Revered Jamie, that judge and Kevin Snr. Also people are hunting down the Guilty Remnant like animals? Shieeet. Can't say I feel particularly sympathetic towards the GR, but whatever, I'm hyped as fuck. I expect to see a lot of people eat crow in this thread.

Nope, LOST.
When Sayid blows himself up on the sub to save everyone else, they (I think Hurley or Sawyer) is like "WE GOTTA GO BACK FOR SAYID!" and Jack says "THERE IS NO SAYID!" It tickled me then, it tickles me now.

I thought it was kind of an odd choice to withhold for a while that Nora and Rev. Matt were brother and sister - like it was supposed to be some sort of moderately surprising revelation.

Not bad, definitely a better episode than the last two and I can finally see signs of why some critics liked it as much as they did.

I think moving the primary focus away from the cop/his family and the cult certainly helped to make it a lot more engaging. Those two aspects of the show are by far the weakest so far and I hope they continue to be sidelined for at least a few more episodes.

I thought the pigeons on the roulette table was the first sign. The second was when Matt's sister offered him the money if he stopped the shaming paper.

I didn't notice a third.

I just watched the preview.

Goodamn, it looks like it picks up significantly in the weeks ahead. I really hope this episode was the turning point.

True but that itself was also a matrix reference. "There is no spoon."

First two eps were pretty meh, but tonight's ep won me over.

I'm remaining guarded, but I'm in for the foreseeable future.

I actually feel the opposite. I really enjoyed the first two episodes but not this one as much. I think it was the focus on the single character that left me feeling 'meh'. Hopefully there was a lot of focus on this character for a reason.

That kids party in the first episode, wtf.

I hate it when characters just have to ask the simple question and ignore it. Makes no sense.

i really like the whole plot idea but with only 7 episodes left .. i guess this whole season will lead to nothing.

Yeah, I was really surprised how crazy the preview looked. I was sold on episode one, but damn, I'm super hyped for the rest of the season. Let there please be a second season if it's good.

Is it screamed though? :p

Thats James Blake playing!

Poor song choice at the end...really felt out of tone with the premiere.

Not a fan of the opening credits. Haha at 'the wire' line lol

FYI, at the TCAs (television critics association) the other day, HBO said they were currently in discussions for a second season, so I'd say it's pretty likely.

Is anyone else as thoroughly impressed Eccleston carried that entire episode by himself? I honestly couldn't have expected that. It felt like a character-centric episode of LOST from the earlier seasons like Walkabout (Locke; season 1) or The Long Con (Sawyer; season 2).

Was this clown the same that appeared in the pilot?
This is creepy!

Wow...it's kinda crazy how much the writer got wrong in this review. Not understanding the title, not knowing why he put the bet on red, misunderstanding the sex scene, etc.

Seriously. I every Leftovers review so far I've stopped reading about half way through (if I get that far). They're so bad. Simple things, like the title could be googled before writing the review.... at a certain point it's just pure laziness (of course compounded by ineptitude).
