Nintendo : buy Mario Kart 8 on the eShop or retail, get a free game

A Japanese company doing something worst for japan than for the usa ?

We are in an alternate reality or something ?

How is this worse? People should be able to beat both games within a month. It's effectively being able to play 2 games instead of one. Sure, just for a month, but digital sucks in any case.

What happens if I get Nintendo Land digital, does it use my existing save game? I'm asking because the digital version of ZombiU created a separate save file from the disc version, which meant playing the whole game again.

I don#t know, but I have quite a few games in digital and physical form: Mario 3D World, Sonic Lost World, Pikmin 3 - probably forgetting some - and in each case they use the same save file as the disc version.

This strikes me as a pretty sneaky, viable option. Giveaway seems pretty open to abuse.

I don't see how this is abuse, even from Nintendo's perspective. You're still buying two copies of Mario Kart and if you sell the retail version afterwards, the buyer will not get the free download game. In fact, I'm looking forward to quite a nice used price for MK8.

So I've just had a talk with my friend who worked at CEX. Back when Nintendo were doing that buy 3 get 1 free 3DS deal, he would use any un-used Club Nintendo from trade-ins and register them over different accounts and it worked fine. So basically:

1) Use that Tesco deal for £35 MK8 for as many games as you like
2) Register the copies to different account
3) Sell the copies to CEX or similar (minimum cash price is likely to be £25, but likely to be higher over launch weekend)
4) Have some cheap games

BONUS: If you have the digital deluxe, you'll get points for the full eShop price of each game you register as they're just standard download codes.

EDIT: For reference, CEX are still giving £25 for DKC:TF. With it being Mario Kart, I could see it being higher as long as you get in quick.

Well, it looks like Japan WiiUs with preorder and purchase of MK8 can choose between two games to play for free for the month.

Kinda sucks.

Hmm... So say I already have the physical NSMBU, if I were to get the digital version, would the save data persist?

Would I have to worry about it clobbering/killing the Luigi add-on DLC?

Although I am also considering just selling the free game download to someone in the BST thread. I prefer to have my games on discs anyway.

As far as I'm aware, all the DD versions of the games on the Wii U save and read to the same files as their physical versions. Digital NSMBU ought to read the same saves and DLC as physical NSMBU based on what I saw on a friend's system.

But I don't actually have any games to test that out myself.

Won't work, you get the free game for registering MK8 on your Club Nintendo account. You can only register it once

I'm not so sure. You can register both a Digital and a Physical of games. It just depends on if both will give you a code to redeem a free game or not.

So what is Nintendo going to do when this inevitably fails to excite the masses? This sounds like Sega Saturn level era of desperateness to me...

Somewhat bumpish perhaps, but I have a question. My WiiU and NNID are registered in Poland. However, my ClubNintendo is registered to UK since it's not available in Poland. As far as past freebies were concerned this managed to work, but I don't know if someone with similar problem (not necessarily Poland, but e.g. Scandinavia) has any idea if it should work this time too.

I hope it works, I'd finally get that darn Wonderful 101.

As long as it's a digital reward, there's no problem. You'll just get your DL code, it can be used on any consoles from the EU region. Since you registered your Club Nintendo account in the UK, should be no problem as long as you get a Club Nintendo PIN :)

Only thing that matters here is where your Club Nintendo account was registered. Since UK is part of the countries for the promotion, it should be fine. Are you going to chose the digital or retail version?

Nah I'm buying retail. Apart from Steam I still like to have boxed copies, I like how they look on the shelf and I don't have enough time/money to really buy tons of games (except for Steam sales, but digital Nintendo games are still not nearly cheap enough).

Also the trade-in prices are not going to be good. who would buy a used-physical when the new one comes with a extra free game. ebay/trade-in prices will be below $30

Well in that case, as long as you get a Club Nintendo PIN in the game case, everything should be fine, since you'll be using a UK account :)

Is the dl code you get from a UK Nintendo club acc only usable on wiiu acc set to uk or can I use it on my WiiU acc set to Sweden?

If the code is locked to UK WiiU acc, could I use the same method as I do on PS4, two accounts on the same machine, one EU and one US, but any game bought and installed on either account is playable by both accounts.

Sorry if this has been answered allready, its in the middle of the night here and I didnt find answere.

I dont think that thing is nessesary at all, just ment to keep the pad flat for the games you play two players on the same pad, like the soccer game. I could be wrong but I never used it when we played at home.

For years I have been avoiding Club Nintendo simply because it was unavailable in my country. Can I create a US one if I'm from somewhere else and reaps this reward?

I would have totally picked Wonderful 101. :/

Can't pick between Mario or Zelda. I've played Zelda on gamecube but I'm not that enthused by Mario either.

I like my retail games but i may have to pick up a digital version of a game and trade in the disc for some credit if I want to make use of this deal. Maybe NSMBU since NSLU was a digital add-on for me so that would make the game all digital.

I dunno. Europe got the best deal this time.

I have a stand laying around, practically new, if you want to pay shipping. Itd be like two stamps at most.

If you want to play the tabletop games, it makes a difference, and you'll probably make your own stand. I sold my copy of party u(fun game, not enought ppl to play), but kept the stand. I thought itd work well with wii sports golf, but it didnt.

Oh, cool, I guess it's time to retire WW for the GC (my most replayed Zelda even if it's not my favorite, probably because I find it the most relaxing) and get the HD remake.

Just buy the game and forget about your pseudo-piracy schemes.

Ofcourse Im going to buy The game, I just dont want to throw away a good promotion just coz Nintendo does not like Scandinavia. Hell, I allready own the physical discs for all the offered games. Im just #teamtoolazytochangedisc

What's the best place in NA to preorder? I don't have a car so I'm not sure about the gas card...

Also it's a *lot* harder to get your content back when your hardware is lost or stolen (less likely to happen with a Wii U, but very likely with a 3DS).

It wasn't for me. I did it in January and it just took one phone call.

I definitely think I'm going to pick Pikmin 3. I never played the first 2 though, so I'm not sure if I'll be missing out on anything (are the stories connected?).

Is Wii U Party any good?

Get pikmin 3, thank me later.

I never played the first two, and could still follow the story.

Don't worry about the stories. Only slightly connected and not that important anyway - Pikmin is all gameplay and style. It oozes fun and beauty. My favourite Wii U game last year.

I already have all NA games but Wii Party U. So I'd like to know if it's good as well even though I'll be getting it anyway since it's my only option.

I suppose there will be plenty of people wishing to trade/buy these codes when the offer starts, so maybe you could chose a game with more value (such as Wind Waker HD) and trade/sell your code, or even keep it and sell your physical copy.

Just references to previous protagonists.

Man, it would be awesome if Nintendo of America had more games for their promotion might have to either sell my physical copy of wind waker or pikmin 3. Most likely Wind Waker cause i don't care for it.

I wish Donkey Kong was in the promotion. Won't even bother with wii party

The DL code can be used on any PAL Wii U, doesn't matter which. Can be someone else's console, if you want.

Great news to everyone in Scandinavia!

Nintend of Europe and Bergsala has somehow come together and made a deal that ensures, that us in Scandinavia also can get a free game (same list as NoE's) when we buy Mario Kart 8!

Some links:

Nintendo Sverige: http://www.nintendo.se/arkivet/2014/20140514-mk8-bonus-game-promotion

Nintendo Danmark: http://www.nintendo.dk/archive/promotions/mk8_vilkaar_betingelser

Thanks, adding that to the OP.

the only game I don't have is the Party game but I don't really have anyone I play with so useless code for me :(

can you give this code away to a friend?

Great! I'm sure this could've been done with a UK Nintendo Club account, but having official support for this is nice. The only downside seems to be that they are sending the download codes at the end of August, at least according to the Finnish site.

I'll grab either NSMBU or Pikmin 3.

edit: Somewhat related, if you buy Super Mario Kart from eShop you'll get its price as a discount if you also buy MK8 from eShop. So three games for the price of one!
