The Game Awards Nominees being announced [Update: Revealed - In OP]

But there were about a billion remakes this year from every major software company, why ya gotta blame TLOU?

I'm not hating on TLOU in particular. I just mentioned it in my last comment as a reference of how many awards it got last year.

Personally, I don't think we should be giving old games new awards. To me, it seems more like giving them awards for the sake of it. Due to the publicity, all this does is give publishers more reason to rehash old games for a quick buck rather than actually funding development for good new games, whether they be sequels or brand new IPs. Just look at the PS4's Metacritic page. Many of the top 10 are remakes/ports of old games.

Well, to put in perspective, Totalbiscuit has 1 853 731 subscribers whilst PewDiePie has 32 319 001 subscribers on youtube.

Even if only a fraction goes to vote, it wouldn't even be close.

Oh I get that, its the 32 million subscribers bit I can't figure out

You think Rockstar aren't making new games

You think Naughty Dog aren't making new games

Not a bad list for once. So far this is way better than the Spike VGAs

Yeah I'm surprised with all of the diversity for once! Still not much love for niche stuff, but niche is niche. (Seriously though, more people need to play Danganronpa!)

I don't get the Tropical Freeze for Best Soundtrack comments.

I listened to the YouTube links from a few pages back and didn't like the music at all.

To each their own and all, but man they did absolutely nothing for me.

I hope you don't mention MM in this thread next year.

Yes, a game that shamelessly aped most of the gameplay systems of a franchise that is on its way to a fourth iteration should definitely be awarded GOTY.

Honestly, I don't care about any of these nominees. Shovel Knight is the best game I played this year.

The nominees seem solid. Definitely doesn't strike me as one from publisher A, one from publisher B and more indicative of what games actually delivered. Don't quite get the Games for Change criteria but it's an interesting selection. The fan categories are pretty good too - no overlaps and a lot more interesting than voting on "best human male/female" or whatever it was last year. A few nitpicks but that'll always happen with personal preference and 5 slots.

I feel like you should go look at the VGX last year or the VGAs before that. There's quite a few JP-developed games on there. Hell, two of them are up for GotY!

My point was that the committee is made up of entirely western game developers, minus Kojima. Not that that's bad or anything, just calling it out. And yes, I know it's always been this way for VGX.

Well this is uh... one way to present five options to choose from I guess:

Very happy to see Hearthstone there. There is NO game that I played more than Hearthstone this year and that's surprising to me considering Dark Souls II came out this year. I have all three consoles yet I spent more time on my iPad and my computer playing this. So good and will only get better.

I've always been disappointed by the lack of niche content at these awards. Best Niche Title would be a cool category. Atlus, XSEED, Aksys and NISA put out plenty of games; give them their own category, Geoff!

Ubisoft Montreal has been pretty prolific in what it has put out in 2014, whether you like their games or not:

Child of Light
Watch Dogs
AC: Unity
AC: Rogue
Far Cry 4

I am someone that generally likes their games, but the award is called 'Developer of the Year' not 'Best Output of the Year'. It should be rewarded to a studio that has done something special that year and with the amount of employees at Ubisoft pumping out that many games isn't really such a big achievement.

I mean, they should not get that award just for shady stuff like the post-release review embargo alone. Even game journalists got upset over that one.

I own the game and think the music is fantastic.

You're right, a couple youtube links out of context, is completely representative of the entire score.

I could give a shit about the awards, but man I'm salty David Wise didn't even get a nod. DKTF is half the game without him.

Same for SO. Best game, best shooter, whatever...but best soundtrack? Destiny has the lead there.
