Exremely slow PS4 download speed

cool im using the xfinity wireless gateway so no doubt thats part of the problem lol

This is my speed

Beware that having a good connection with some servers on the Internet (Ookla's SpeedTest servers in your case) doesn't imply that you'll get a good connection with all servers on the Internet.

If anything, every ISP will make sure it's properly connected with Ookla's servers, because it's some of the most popular link test out there, and they obviously don't want SpeedTest to give them a bad press, otherwise their customers would go elsewhere.

I can tell that something has been off with PSN download speeds since FW 2.0 (in the sense that they aren't as stable as they were before), but it also looks like Comcast is one of those greedy ISPs who try to racket content providers besides already getting money from customers.
So, I'm not sure what or who is to blame here...

Oh I know that, I have tested it on many other speed test sites too all consistent and then I get this

(Apologies for the vertical camera I was holding my controller and fending a dog off at the same time)

click here for the bad video :/

Which could either be the result of Sony's infrastructure not being properly sized, a bug in PS4's system software preventing it from downloading stuff at full speed (which has likely been a problem since FW 2.0), the console's link to your local network not being good, a saturated peering or transit link between your ISP and Akamai, your network route to PSN servers not being good (using Google or other public DNS servers may cause the use of unnecessary long paths, and the longer the path, the slower the download speed), or your ISP implementing bandwidth throttling. For the things I can think of at the moment.

There's a bandwidth test in the console's network settings that should tell you how good/bad the connection is to its servers.

Connecting all the way from France to Akamai servers located on the US west coast (see, my custom DNS server is not properly configured, I should be contacting Akamai servers located in France), I get 22 Mbps from my 100 Mbps Internet connection at the moment, which is great considering the thousands km/miles.
So, I would think the problem is probably not on Sony's servers.

I'm also getting very erratic download/upload speeds and I'm on a hardwired connection via powerline adapter. There's definitely something wrong and it's gotta be on Sony's end.

I tested the powerline adapter on a computer for a little while just to make sure it wasn't the powerline adapter, but I get around the same consistent speeds as I do connected straight to the router. I plugged it back into the PS4 right after I got done and I did a connection test and my download/upload goes from 24-26mbps/3-4mbps to 5-15mbps/kbps.

Hmm interesting I've experienced this as well. My PS4 has always been wired, and I have Verizon fios. I downloaded Infamous SS (the entire download) in like 2 hours when SS came out. I recently bought AC4 black flag because of a sale and it took like 12 hours to download. At the time of the AC4 download my fios speed was about the same it's always been, so it wasn't them.

Had the same issue a few days ago while downloading REmaster. Was taking superlong. Then I put it in rest mode and when I turned it back on half an hour later it completely downloaded it, while before when it was on it said it was gonna take 3-4 hours.

That actually happened with me yesterday with the Planetside 2 Beta. 1.5 gigs in 2 hours -> 4 gigs in 25 minutes while in rest mode.

Wow, same thing happened to me while downloading REmaster. And the thing is, I was on a wireless connection (I just bought powerline adapters this past Saturday) then. I put my PS4 in standby and I happened to check back about an hour/hour and half later and my download was completely finished.

Yep, cross posting from another thread.

I know it says the speed calculations are approximate when testing your network connection on PS4. But my multiple tests over wifi and wired have been very spotty. On wifi I get around 4-5 mbps upload(this was tested right after boot up). Plugging in a wire, and iirc I would get around 8-10, but then subsequent test would drop to 3?! If I restart the ps4, and retest, it would go back up to about 7ish, and then doing test again right after that would again drop to 3 range. Not sure how plugging in a wire, would give me lower results than wifi, and only good results only immediatly after a restart. Speedtest.net on my mac confirms my upload speeds to be 50mbps.

Perhaps seeing this info quoted above, that my first test were the faster "rest mode" speeds. But then it soon drops to these slower speeds shortly after it's booted up.

I hate that Sony still hasn't talked about this or said it will be fixed.

I've basically given up hope on this one. I'm assuming download speeds will just stay fucked or randomly get fixed in firmware 4.0 or something down the line. We can have a race between fixed download speeds and suspend/resume.

That's very weird. I would say I hope it gets fixed soon, but it looks like this has been going on for a few months now. They need to get their s*** together. It's ridiculous. Most of us are paying for this service.

FWIW this is what I'm getting through the powerline adapters connected to my PC using the same wall plugs I connect the PS4 to:

4081341062.png

That is my full internet speed I should be getting. But on PS4 I get s***ty 5-25mbps download with kbps-4mbps for upload.

With my laptop connected wired to my modem I Can get 125mps download speed. My PS4 wired to the modem I only get 38mps. Right now I'm using a 200Mps poweline adapter and I get almost 30 down on the PS4. But yeah, ever since that one update the speed fluctuates and becomes super slow. Hope they fix this issue soon.

Yet I can't get higher than 500KB/s download on my ps4 which is wired to my router that is about 5 feet away. Tried everything I could think of. Only thing that makes sense as this point is that the last big update screwed up something, as it was fine before that.

Yeah it was the 2.0 update I believe. But do you remember what you were getting on the ps4 before that? Holy crap is that like some kind of business tier internet ?

has sony said anything about the next update? last week I was getting 48KB/s on psn.... :| not a joke. my upload speed always maxes out no problem.

im starting to think its not a firmware thing, during the Christmas hack I managed to sneak on and was getting almost 70% of my download speed. the fastest ive ever gotten with sony. now its beyond terrible again. im starting to think their network is so shit that they cant handle the load so they throttle.

Could be a thing but I believe its firmware as it maxes out when I am in rest mode.

My connection before and after update was 150Mbit/s. Before the update majority of my downloads were at least 10MB/s. Started slowing down from there after the update to what it's at now. I've only recently switched providers, so I know that's not the issue.

I have residential gigabit fiber through Centurylink now.

This is pretty fucked. I have less than a gig to go to finish downloading Game of Thrones episode 1 and its telling me I have 73 minutes left. It's like Sony wants me to trade my system for an Xbox One.

Ive been sitting on 1.62 GB out of 4.48 for the last hour for Grim Fandango. Sony really needs to fix this shit its ridiculous.

Usually my ps4 is fast, today it's slow as hell, WiFi is telling me ten hours to download grim fandango, through Law Wire? 99 hours?

Idk, I haven't changed anything but the mtu since the lizard squad event

Downloaded games just fine on friday

Possibly they use an edge network that tries to use DNS to geo-locate you, and a different DNS server shakes things up.

Alternatively, you are getting pointed to the right server but it is full, and changing DNS is the same as rolling the dice and getting pointed to another "right" server but it is not being used. So you get better speeds.

I've definitely jumped up hugely in speed just by rebooting the console. It may have selected a different and faster server when it came back even though the DNS server was the same.

I think you're right. Went back to the same speed.

I've been experiencing slow download speeds since around the time 2.0 was released. I'm downloading a few things now, however, and they're going much faster than usual.

Anyone else seeing faster speeds? Wonder if Sony fixed some things on their end.

EDIT: Think I posted too soon. Speeds slowed down again. :(

I am one of those fortunate people that never had issues with the PSN and slow speeds... that is until about a week ago. And it continues to be painfully, painfully slow.

I have assigned a static IP, forwarded all ports, even put the PS4 in DMZ. Nothing does a damn thing to fix the speeds.

It is a shame. Everything else on my network flies (well except YouTube, fuck Fios with how they throttle YouTube), so I don't know, could it be Verizon also throttles all PSN speeds, or is it just the PSN is screwed in certain areas? I am not eliminating either as being a possibility.

Just got my PS4 today and it's painfully slow. I wanted to play TLOU tonight, but it's saying 14 hours.

Can't believe changing the DNS settings worked. From 14 hours to 55+ minutes.

Still an issue with the 2.0.4 update.

Immediately after updating my PS4 started downloading a 8 GB patch. I have a 100 Mbps connection and my PS4 is hard wired. The download should have taken about 10 minutes. Instead it originally showed 106 minutes, which quickly changed to 3 hours. The download was going at either 2 Mbps or 18 Mbps seemingly randomly switching between the two. I noticed it was downloading from Akamai's servers in New York. I have Comcast and they host Akamai's servers inside their network. Ping time to the server was 21 ms.

I put my PS4 in rest mode and watched the download speeds on my router. They stayed at 2 Mbps for a few minutes before going up to 18 Mbps, where they appeared to be maxed out. At that rate it would take about an hour.

I checked back about 10 minutes later and it was downloading at about 25 Mbps from the Akamai servers in Virginia, which are also hosted by Comcast. I checked again about 10 minutes later and it was downloading at 23 Mbps from a different New York Akamai server by ways of Virginia according to trace routes.

All in all it took about an hour to download, which is an average of around 18 Mbps. That's on a 100 Mbps wired conenction, so about a fifth of my mac speeds. That's in Rest mode. With the console on, it would have taken around 9 times as long.

There's definately still problems.

For a paid service, this is just ridiculous.

The speedtest was done on my laptop connected via Wi-Fi, my PS4 is hardwired.

Are there any fixes for an alternating fast/slow download speed?

I'm wired using Ethernet, and running a connection test on PS4 always shows about 25Mbps speed.

But when I try to download something, it alternates between super fast, and super slow, over and over.

Happens to me the same way I will get about 8 mbps and then it goes down to .7 mbps, then fluctuates again. Pausing and starting the download seems to work, also I think putting your system in rest mode makes it download faster. They need to do something to fix it, it hasn't been terrible on my end, but still annoying.

I've just been putting it in rest mode.

changing to google DNS (8.8.8.8. / 8.8.4.4) helped for me.

Yes it would help, although if you are outside the US I would also try:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Which are open DNS addresses.

I have a 20down/10up connection speed but my PS4 failed to deliver speeds higher than 3down/1up, which is absolutely pathetic. Changing to these DNS open addresses as well as restoring my PS4's factory settings and rebooting my router helped a lot. I'm now getting 16down/8up.
