Pokken Tournament for Wii U (Spring 2016 WW) Announced at Pokemon World Championships

I'd be surprised if the Wii U version had less than 16. The current arcade select screen can hold 14. They are going to add at least 2 on top of that imo. And if they expand the select screen for one more on each side of each row...then it's actually pretty logical they end up with 20.

16 - 20 isn't bad at all for a starting roster.

I was expecting 20, but the game is coming out about six months earlier than I expected so I don't think they'll be able to hit that number. I hope I'm wrong though.

Not really, most are 13 - 15.
And then even more when they hit consoles.
I don't think so. I'd the average is about 10 then More characters are usually introduced when it hits console. Anyways it's pretty much guaranteed that we'll see more Pokemon here so this is kinda moot

I imagine Mewtwo's going to be playable because fans will complain if he's not.

I'd rather have a mix of light, middle and heavyweight characters.

Blaziken is technically in beta right now since he's being removed at the end of the month for tweaking. Pikachu Libre will probably get the same treatment in the arcades after that so I don't know how many they'll be able to add by launch. They could continue to do it like that when the Wii U version hits but who knows.

Also, I hope you can get everything easily in the Wii U version. For example, Whimsicott and Jirachi are assists but you can only use them if you used your player card to play the game between a certain date. Event-only content only puts you at a disadvantage in a fighting game.

I hope Blastoise gets in just so we can have the classic Charizard vs. Blastoise match-up. Hoping for some Gen 5 and 6 stuff too.

I went into a complete blackout regarding this game and recently I say some footage of Gengar vs Pikachu. Completely different game since last I saw it.

Did anyone played this ? The last video felt like there was no more Tekken parts to it, looks like an original 3D pokemon battle game to me. Or the mechanics are still somewhat similar to Tekken ?

From the video it seems to play more like the Naruto fighters than Tekken, but I could be wrong.

Mewtwo seems like the perfect "boss" character. He's probably in.

I'm just hoping for more unorthodox choices like Suicune.
And by that I mean

The only similarity it has to Naruto games is the field camera, after that the similarities end there. It plays nothing like the Naruto games -- for one thing, there isn't just a single melee attack button and you have more than two special moves. In other words, it's deeper than the Naruto games (but that probably isn't saying much because the Naruto games are extremely simple).

The duel phase all on its own makes this completely different from the Naruto games. It's closer to Tekken in how it is designed than the Naruto games -- juggle combos, wall splats, sidestepping, etc. It may not have highs, mids, or lows but it has the other traits of a Tekken game.

"So Justin picked Rufus and Wolverine." BAHAHA! Great job on the commentary, Markman.

Throw me into the camp that wants to keep the original voices. It's clear the voice direction is much more professional coming out of Japan. Oddly enough though, they picked a pack of Pokemon that have a decent number of voice cross-over.

Pikachu, Charizard, Suicune, Gengar: You'll never have to worry about them.
Machamp, Blaziken, Gardevoir, Weavile: These have had decent dub voices in the past.
Lucario: Mr. Special. Who knows what they want to do.

In addition, I wonder if Wii U will present stage selection in the final product. If stage size does indeed affect matches in a prominent way, it'll need to be.

EDIT: If you're having trouble will Pokemon, ask Justin that Poke-Nerd.

I would love to see Zoraork but I can't imagen how they would implement his Illusion ability.
Can anyone think of a way to implement that? I'd love to hear it.

Maybe that could be his burst mode thing since he doesn't have a mega evolution.

I'd love to see Zoroark too. He's one of my favorites from that generation. He's hard to implement in fighting games though.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Doesn't the Japanese version have the Japanese anime voices?

Edit: I was watching some matches from Japan and Gengar's Ultra move does so much damage. The guy also uses Whimsicott's Subsitute as an assist to cover himself.

I was shocked at how much damage it did, that had to be atleast 85%, it must be easy to dodge once you know what it looks like and so is situational.

Nintendo games are built to be simple to use, hard to master, philosophy for almost all their games and its what helped them get the reputation they have.

All of this stuff will definitely just be available in the console version at launch. This is how this stuff works. Arcade version is basically a beta test for parts of the game, then the console release is the full deal with everything available. Console version will end up with more characters than arcade will eventually have also.

And I would be surprised if Mewtwo isn't the boss (and playable).

Like I said, calling it now, for the Wii U release 16 minimum. Maybe up to 20.

If they do decide to dub the Pokemon voices, I hope Bill Rogers does Lucario. His Lucario sounds are freaking fierce (see Brawl) and better than the Japanese ones, in my opinion.

Who? I thought Sean Schemmel voiced Lucario in Brawl.

I personally want Druddigon or a Greninja that hasn't been Sakurai-nerfed.

The only thing is that Pokemon games (main and spinoff) have a history of having event-only content. Most of it is usually already on the disc/cart but hopefully they won''t pull any of that with the Wii U version.

Hey yall, my boyfriend wants a game similar to Pokken to try before Pokken comes out -- should we just get Tekken?

I figure it's way closer to a Naruto or DBZ style game

Am I the only one disappointed that the random character isn't a Ditto that transforms into a random character as the match begins?

Far from it! I hope they add it in the console release. Maybe even with a Ditto face on the fighter, but that might be asking for too much.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
It is rendering the same game twice, once at 720p and once at 480p.

I thought it was just rendering a single area with two different camera angles.

Eh I'd say it's a poor interpretation of Ditto. It's something Melee perpetuated that I feel like is wrong.

It really looks like it's its own thing completely, but the Naruto games seem like your best bet. Definitely not Tekken.

Or do what Tekken did. Have Ditto be Mokujin where's he's a different character each round.

This, Splatoon, Smash 4, Mario Kart 8, W101, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Tropical Freeze, & 3D World alone are worth the price of admission.

Those games look great in their own way but I don't think I fit the targeted audience.

Zelda U, Pokken, and Smash honestly seem like the only game I would play without regretting my purchase. Nintendo makes great games nonetheless and that should never be questioned.

How is Xenoblade (sp?) on the Wii U will there be expansions/DLC?

I heard Xenoblade X was good & yes, there is DLC for the game.

Traditional Pokemon-styled "event-only" content probably won't be so much of a thing here, with a fighting game like this. After all, you'd bust the competitive viability of a fighter wide open, if you limited content to those who can get to the areas where the content is distributed, during the limited time when that content is available.

However, time unlock, manual unlock or DLC content is still very much a possibility for the console port, I'd imagine, based on how Bamco handles things with the likes of Gundam vs. and Tekken. If so, then the main thing to wonder about would be how much Bamco and TPC will be willing to give away for free/in-game and what will carry a price tag, later.

Tekken is a good game series, and you'd get a better appreciation of the various references Pokkén makes to that series if you played it (TTT2 Wii U is also a good port, from what I heard). But at the same time, Pokkén is so much its own unique beast (and definitely NOT like Tekken), that it'd be hard to recommend anything distinctly like it.

I'd honestly be more inclined to recommend Soulcalibur V, if you want a fighting game that hails from the same development team and has full 3D movement.

Super stoked the game is coming our way!

I've wanted a Pokémon fighting game since I was a little kid and now I get to play it! My most wanted fighter is my favorite Pokémon which is, of course, Budew. Putting all of my energy behind it, so let's go Budew! :)

Does anyone know how to switch between the street fighter and free roam modes during battle? Can't seem to figure it out, just played four matches at the world champs.
