Fates has armour customisation; and therefore armour removal. You can take off much more than the shirt, but obviously there's not much to see on a stylised 3DS model. The important thing is it sets a precedent for future Smash Bros. games.

Hmm... I like the concept but it's a shame to waste that on a 3DS game.
Why did Shulk of all people have to be the one male character in Smash 4 with a shirtless costume? I get the Xenoblade costume reference, but still. Not the newly buff swordsman, not the hunky boxer, not the spandex-wrapped racer who's practically bursting out of his outfit already. Ugh.

There is nothing in the series to indicate Ryu's sexuality one way or the other. Ryu's whole live is about training and getting stronger.
Then going by that logic, so is Chung Li, Sagat M Bison ect...

Pretty much. He's got such a one track mind that I doubt he even fully understands what things like romance are.All that matters is training and fighting.
That's my point. When a dude has his ass hanging out its "bad character design and yuck" but if a female character has it like Mika, its totally cool and if you don't like it it's "stop pushing your agenda"

If they took their clothes off withing the confines of their own games they might have gotten a costume. Maybe people should beg for the team to add in a 9th beach outfit for every character as DLC.

Men's asses are covered in pretty much every standard acceptance of male sexiness. I don't think women and/or gay dudes really want to see Ryu's ass in a thong, they want to see him look sexy in a way that fits his character and modern standards of what an attractive man looks like.

You know, I thought he looked cool going all hobo-ish gritty and badass with that facial hair and without the shirt, but reading through this thread, even if Capcom didn't necessarily do so with this 'sexy daddy' intentions or whatever everyone is calling it but Ryu is really rocking that look very attractively.
I guess it's only fair with all the cheesecake SFV been pushing, but who knew the Ryu overhaul would be the one major beefcake getting people all hot and bothered.
In hindsight, Ken really seemed like he got the short end of the stick there.

It doesnt have to be Ryu, who has his ass hanging out. But I trust Japan will give us more characters with male sex appeal in their always slightly pervy games.
Politically though Japan hasnt even matched the US in its acknowledgement of the gay community. Game wise , since "girls dont play video games" I assume thats why the games we played had been onesided for so long. Games take awhile to make, and I assume game development communities have a sort of entrenched way of working, as many fields do.
Everything in time... the gay agenda will win out. Or is it just the globalization and homogenizing of our cultures and the inevitable wearing away of prejudice.

Little Mac was shirtless in Super Punch-Out. Ike had two separate underwear/swimsuit costumes between Awakening and Fates. Falcon had the Blood Falcon boxer shorts from F-Zero GX. None of those would have to be invented from whole cloth.

Why would I have a source for what is clearly an inference based on consumption of popular media.

A cursory amount of research would show that men's butts aren't particularly underappreciated among those demographics - in particular, equating covered asses to the 'standard gay male acceptance of sexiness' is especially easily disputed. And in the case of Ryu, the structurally-similar fundoshi has been central to fan depictions of him for decades - it's even been modded into SFIV. Going off that, it's a little difficult to say with certainty that a thonglike outfit would be received badly...
Ken is forever in Ryu's shadow. And yet, he is never jealous or bitter about it, loving Ryu like a brother. WHEN WILL WE GET HOT KEN?!

The "dad bod" was such a shortlived and ill conceived fad, that most people didn't even actually learn what it was referring to.
The GAF thread about it was hilarious because people kept posting ripped older muscular guys.
Ryu in a fundoshi would be the most natural extension his character since he grew a beard that one time.
If we ever do get swimsuit alts for the characters, it's the only logical choice.
