What happened to the lighting system and shadows?

Appropriate gif. Mods will be the equivalent of pushing granny out of the way.

I like the base game look myself. It looks nice, clean, nothing that would win awards for art style but it's not ugly.

Even though the PS4 version's graphics are looking weak, I expected as much. I'm much happier about 1080p. Love a good clear image, even though the graphics aren't as good as they could be.

That said, this game is going to be GLORIOUS.

"If people are allowed to believe that Halo 5 is visually a great looking next gen title without getting shit for it, then I can abso fucking lutely think the same for Fallout 4"

there, it is done

Luckily I think Halo 5 looks pretty gross at times. Does this mean I get a free pass here?

If people's opinions on a game's graphics destroys your hype for a game, there's a problem.

The game looks pretty bad for a game in 2015. I still want to play it, but I don't have to defend the game to other people for some unknown reason as if it's perfect...

Thank God for mods.

This. What does it matter if other people think the graphics look bad? You can still be hyped about the gameplay and the graphics if you wish. This is just insecurity.
I think some of the screens look decent for a Fallout game, but it's still not up to current gen standards.

I was playing New Vegas today and forgot how bad-looking the game was/is. However, if Fallout 4's story and roleplaying are as good as New Vegas's, then I'll be more than happy.

The visuals are a bit of a letdown, though.

I can't believe people are actually saying the game doesn't look ugly. Seriously. You may be excited to play the game (I know I am), and you should be, but be honest with yourself. This looks like a last gen game.
I think it looks fine. There is more to a games looks than just the character models and texture resolution ect. Atmosphere is one of those things and I really like it in this game. Its very visually appealing to me,everything looks pretty clean to me too. Bloodborne was a jaggy mess with a crap frame rate bit the artwork and atmosphere made it look stunning.
So yeah this game isn't amazing looking from a technical standpoint but its not ugly.

Jesus, what is with all the arguments and negative comments. If you don't like the look of the game either say it once and move on or at least keep the arguments to a minimum. I seriously don't understand why some of you guys are intent on destroying people's hype.

Destroyers of hype!

Nobody's trying to destroy any hype for the game. We knew from the trailer that the game wasn't going to be a looker, but this is just way below what people were expecting.

Again, people should be hyped for the game because it's Fallout. You just have to have incredibly low standards if you're fine with a AAA PS4 game looking like this.

This game is going to be good. I have so much faith in Bethesda after Skyrim.

But this definitely seems like they are working with the same engine. The graphics are "scaled up" to the higher specs of PS4 and XB1 (which are pretty low end PC specs). So this is a PS3/360 engine on a low end PC.

This isn't PS4 footage. Look at the buttons and do you really think in a PS4 gameplay the character would be named Phil Spencer...............................? This is the demo they showed in E3. Why do we give credit to a video which is completely lying and is wrong?

Of course, it's not PS4 gameplay. They have a marketing deal with Microsoft. But I don't think that there will be much differences between Xbox One and PS4.

Appropriate gif. Mods will be the equivalent of pushing granny out of the way.

Of course, it's appropriate. I love cross gen titles and have pre-ordered Rise of the Tomb Raider for Xbox 360 (just look at its thread). But nevertheless last gen hold Fallout 4 back. Morrowind and Oblivion looked great at launch, Fallout 4 will look worse than The Witcher 3, that was never cross gen.

Do you think you could help?

I mean, I can't of anything to say other than "The look of this game appeals to me, and I really like looking at it"

I should not have to help. Any game I find visual appealing I can rattle several reasons why (from lighting, to textures, to post processing effects, etc). It should not be as hard as the reasons why I do not find something appealing.

Destroyers of hype!
Come on now, don't let other people's views affect you. A lot of people thought The Order 1886 was a load of manure here while it's one of my favorite games this year. Same with other games as well. Try to have an open mind. Everything in the world is disliked or criticized by someone.

You don't understand what I said. I'll explain it to you.

There's no marketing. We haven't seen much gameplay. We haven't seen many screens. We are thirsty for info, screens and gameplay. We get a few leaked screens.

We come in here and get hyped and admire the screens we are thirsty for.
Thread gets overrun with shit posts and people telling other people that their opinions are wrong etc.
People try to carry on saying that they like the screens.
People are still bearing the force of the shitfest.

Can you not see how that kills the hype a little bit?

I agree that it's not the best looking game out there for a 2015 title, but like I said, you have to take into consideration that it's the type of title where it's nigh on impossible to achieve amazing graphics. Especially having the gameplay systems that this type of game does.

Too bad FO4 it is being made by Bethesda and not Obsidian.

*shrug* maybe they have learned something.

Looks like a Bethesda game on consoles to me. Not sure why people were expecting anything else.

I assume most of the people who are terribly worried about the graphics have decent PCs and will be getting Fallout 4 for PC. In that case, why in the world would you judge the graphics based on PS4 screenshots? Wouldn't the sensible thing be to wait for some uncompressed PC footage with the settings cranked? How many people upset with the graphics in this thread are actually buying the PS4/Xbox version?

Thank you JESUS, the IQ isn't as bad as I thought. I can live with that. Shadows still suck tho.
The IQ is bad, Having AA does not mean the IQ is good.

compressed jpegs are worthless.

lol at Durante and his usual bullshit. its getting old. grow up.
You may have a point about the poster, however I still believe it should look better. I get a feeling Slasher J believes it looks better than the shots in the OP, but we will see.

This is a Bethy game, bugs are part of the gameplay , also illogical things :

These shots are hilarious, I wanted to install the game just to take some shots. I suspect bad graphics will be the least of this game's problems at release.

...This looks so bad, a doll which should be a baby. This game has some of the worse character models I've seen.

There are a ton of bad looking games this gen. Not counting indie games, this is amazing spiderman on ps4.

How did you get fraps installed on your PS4? Care to give me a link.

Well now gaf knows how i feel when i want to get hyped for assassins creed or call of duty(those are filled with shitposts this barely has any honestly)

But seriously it's going to happen no matter the game. The graphics dont really look 2015 standard and people are calling that out criticism does not equal shitposting

Also I'm new to Fallout but I'm truly excited to play the game, but you can't ignore that the graphics can not compete with current gen AAA games. That is what people are comparing to this. I think it is fair to compare graphics, but also remember gameplay will differ. Hype should not be killed for anyone. I hope consumers are critical of developers, but buy games you want.

I can't believe people are actually saying Mike's girlfriend doesn't look ugly. Seriously. You may like spending time with her (I know I do), and you should, but be honest with yourself. She looks like a high school girl.
Hey buddy just stop with this. I get your points but I don't think this furthers conversation.

No, I don't and insulting my comprehension skills doesn't prove a point either...

I understood what you said as it wasn't exactly a physics equation, but that doesn't mean I agree with it. As this thread has shown, there's a lot of opinions and I'm not sure why anyone would base their hype off of people judging a game's graphics.

I didn't mention wanting amazing graphics, did I? I find it lackluster even for all that's going (since that seems to be repeated 50 times over as if we're all dumb). That's my opinion. Not your own. Big whoop.

I still plan on playing the shit out of it but this attitude that we have to be all aboard the hype train without disliking something is absurd.

So basically anything negative can't be discussed because it kills hype? I highly doubt people saying the graphics look last gen is killing anyones hype.
It's not even a discussion though. It's constant posts of how the game looks bad.

Thanks Shinobi. I just don't see the point in coming in here and constantly repeating the same sentence over and over again. Fair enough discussion is warranted based on the set of screens but it's not as if there is a discussion taking place. It's basically people saying "Hey, this looks good" and people replying "Your opinion is totally wrong dude".

Then again, I'm sitting back and admiring the screens, knowing that in a few short days, I'll be immersed in an amazing world. ;)

My guess is Bethesda approached this the same way they did with Oblivion.

A lot of people here are thinking that this was a previous gen title that got ported over and abandoned last gen due to sale output. This is understandable but REALLY not believable if you know Bethesda's history.

A lot of the time during development on Oblivion they were guessing when it came to hardware for the next-gen at the time and it made the game age rather poorly, or rather that was the excuse. However, the leaps between 6th and 7th were so massive that at the time, you could overlook it and go "Wow... that's amazing". That's why so many people remember being floored at Morrowind or Oblivion but look at it now and want to puke (I still love them both regardless). However, the disparity is not so great this time around and it's apparently showing.

Seems like this is the same thing happened with Fallout 4, and either they undershot it when it came to the graphics department outright, or they got the memo from the dev kits early enough for a baseline and just went crazy with designing everything else (explains the seemingly huge inclusion of features like building your own towns and whatnot in their already large worlds) as Bethesda is known to do in their design.

Either way I think it looks fine. And it'll probably look fantastic in a few years with some mod love. I love Witcher 3 (probably my game of the year) on PS4 but the draw distance isn't that great either for environmental detail and shadows, it just hides it a lot better. Of course, I'm not going to sit here and pretend like Witcher 3 isn't a technical marvel or a real looker either. The monstrous world size with pretty much no loading screens apart from the initial area loads and amazing IQ (probably the best all year other than Bloodborne) despite all that makes it obviously far better especially when you take into account the team sizes and the budget, but every game is ugly if you look close enough at it.

Can't wait for the 10th.

EDIT: Also lol at the people in this thread actually conspiring that Bethesda is twirling their evil mustaches at the sheeple'd masses by hiding gameplay footage behind the E3 demo.

Bethesda never show off their games, at least when compared to how eager other developers are. They'll get one or maybe two good demo's out in the public during the big conferences and let that sit until release. Has been this way since Oblivion.

These screens don't look very good for current gen. But its Bethesda. Skyrim actually looked pretty good on PC, but Bethesda are certainly not top tier when it comes to visuals.

Sadly Bethesda has decided to go Youtube exclusive (and I guess maybe IGN?) since E3. We tried many times and didn't get any videos since the first announcement trailer.

Maybe they think Youtube hides flaws in the visuals?

Except your point still isn't really that good because you, like several other people in the thread act like game developers have to check specific boxes, and are required by the laws of gaming to allocate as much resource as equally possibly to all these different places.

In other words, you think it's a REQUIREMENT that Bethesda games should have amazing mindblowing graphics, because it's a post-apoc game that makes millions.

Have you ever considered that MAYBE, they don't care about the graphics as much, because they know most of the fans don't either? Yes, it would be nice if Fallout had great graphics, but it didn't the last two times, and it doesn't now.

They added a full, dynamic extremely in-depth crafting and building system, where almost every single physical asset in the game can be picked up, rearranged, or given a purpose in gameplay. They've completely retooled the way combat and stats work. This game has 100s and 100s of NPCs, all with stats and items and behavior patterns that need to be accounted for. They literally spent over 2 years of doing the protagonist recording lines. This game has over 111,000 voiced lines, to ensure that the game delivers the same level of freedom of choice that Fallout fans have come to expect. More than Fallout 3 and Skyrim combined. They have gone above and beyond to ensure that this is an exciting, full game with a huge world.

To have the gall to say that the entire team should LOSE THEIR JOBS, because the graphics don't BLOW YOUR MIND, is childish and petty.

Damn, even I feel like I need to backtrack a bit and I've never said FO4 was anything less than a GOTY contender for me. I'm still not a huge fan of the character models and the aggressive LOD management is going to occasionally annoy me, but I do feel like these things matter less now that I remember how much is actually going on behind the curtain. Thanks for that!

Meh, I don't have a console so I'll be playing on PC. If these pics are real it doesn't look that good. If it looks a little rough on PC there will be texture mods as soon as the mod kit is released in the spring.

#1 why are people comparing it to Fallout 3's graphical quality and not Skyrim's?

#2 Gamebryo must die

#3 it definitely has some good looking moments mixed with its bad no shadow ones
v4WV6QH.jpg

I like this shot, the framing in third person looks nice, might actually play a significant portion of the game in third person this time.

This is still the Oblivion Engine???

If you want to use that argument, then technically it's still the Morrowind engine. They licensed Gamebryo for it, heavily edited it to be an engine suited for their needs, and have always heavily edited it further between most of their releases. They finally gave it a name (Creation Engine) for Skyrim's release.

I'm still not sure why they can't manage a decent shadow system. They had no excuses last gen, so to still lack an effective solution is just... embarrassing for them.

Oblivion was pretty mindblowing at it's release...

That said, I think that TESVI will make full use of the new gen hardware and look much better than Fallout 4.

Graphics are dissapointing but as long as the game is anywhere near as good as Skyrim or NV I don't really care how it looks.

I really, really, really hope that Bethesda uses a different engine in future installments, though. Gamebryo looks so archaic at this point.

Luckily I think Halo 5 looks pretty gross at times. Does this mean I get a free pass here?

yea

I mean shit, I won't lie, I'm pretty disappointed by what I'm seeing in these screenshots, assuming that there's no significant day 1 patching to consider and shadow/draw distance are as gimped as they appear to be. Up to this point I thought Fallout 4 had pretty fucking awesome graphics, all things considered, but that's because I assumed that the footage we had seen up to that point had been of the Xbox One version, when it seems now that it was PC footage instead.

I still think the game looks reasonably good, considering everything that the engine and console are responsible for tracking and handling. I really like the art style and the unique implementation of PBR, the game reminds me of the old CG Fallout art, and PC game CG from that era in general. And I'm glad the game's only a little over a week away now because now I want to see for myself what's up with these visuals. Granted I'll be satisfied if my setup affords me a modest improvement over the visuals seen in the E3 footage, but I did expect the game's outdoor areas to look better on consoles than what these screenshots depict.

Halo 5 also runs at twice the framerate.

Fallout 4 also *all sorts of crazy shit*.

Yeah, what Deep said, it really was just a few people. One of whom got banned.

I don't mind people hating on the graphics. I just mind the few people who act like the game doesn't have a right to exist because of them.
Now this i agree with the whole "lol looks like a ps2 game" and "the team should be fired posts were hot garbage but luckly in this thread it was a minority
