Uncharted 4 preview thread. New footage/info

I love that the first thing Nate does in these previews is denounce the use of technology...

"Hey, you know what never loses signal? Paper."

The real adventure man! :)

Really such a statement is quite a juxtaposition again the medium Nate resides in himself, but I love how it fits in the setting of Uncharted and with Drake as a character.

That's just gorgeous. The vistas are going to be mental aren't they?

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
He reminds me of those aliens from the movie Mars Attacks, i feel like he's going to start making that AAAATATATATATATATATAAT!!! sound. It's the creepy eyes....

There's a commentary track for that movie that's just Martians yelling.

Do the journalists have promo discs? Or is it a "vertical slice" of the Madagascar demo in downloadable form?

If it's a promo disc, has anyone tried to do a trophy compare...?

Just pre ordered my copy Digitaly today and am going through the Nathan Drake Collection to get ready for it.

Hoping for another masterpiece from Naughty Dog

Is it... for example?

Can you point out what he said that was wrong? Why is he talking out of his ass? Is it because you don't understand what soft body modeling or decal shaders are? :)

He mentioned that "tessellated water" was "back from the PSX demo", when AFAIK we had no evidence that was ever the case. Furthermore, where is soft body physics used, if you're such an expert? I can't see why the animations are soft body in any way.

He also mentions a "possible day/night system" and "maybe weather as well". We have absolutely no reason to believe this is the case, and again, AFAIK day/night cycles would mean real-time GI like QB instead of the more likely and much cheaper light maps he himself mentioned.

They're all over the shop. Just watch the characters in the Jeep.

As someone who has never played an Uncharted game but is very excited for this fourth game in the series, would it be a bad idea to pick up the Nathan Drake Collection and play through ALL of those games before this? It's a bit of a dilemma for me. I really worry that it would burn me out on the style before going into this, but I also know there's no way to go back and play the prequels after experiencing the genre refinements of this game. I don't want to feel like I'm walking into the final act of a movie that everyone else has seen already either. But three games to grind through, plus this new one? That's a lot. How long are those previous installments?

I personally think it's a 'must'. A lot of the emotional connections will be enhanced because of the familiarity you've built over the previous three games. Of course there's nothing stopping you playing this independently but I think you'd miss out on a layer of understanding. You should be able to complete all three in a week, so there's plenty of time to get re-enthused once this baby hits. If you haven't played TLOU, that would be a great title to get you acquainted with how far ND have come. So, UC1/2/3 in a week and a steady playthrough of TLOU should set you up perfectly for the grand finale.

Yeah, that's exactly what I worry about missing out on. I'm a lore guy and these characters seem to have a lot of personality quirks that I'm already noticing in trailers and such that has me feeling like a third wheel. But that's a lot of fucking game to plough through knowing that I ultimately want to play this new gorgeous looking thing. I got the Bayonetta 2 pack for Wii U and made the decision to play through Bayonetta 1 first and loved the hell out of it. I still haven't really touched Bayonetta 2 because I felt a bit "spent" after playing the original. And we're talking 3 games here.

Holy shit. I had sorta stopped keeping up with news on UC4, and never even downloaded the beta I got with the collection.

I'm finally watching these videos and... holy shit.

Uncharted is a pretty story heavy game. I would certainly play the NDC first. You still have a month until UC4 comes out and they aren't that long of games. You can probably get through all 3 in a week or 2 and still have a couple weeks to "detox"

I'd say go for it, knowing the characters before going into 4 will be pretty important, as they are very character driven games, and because as you said going back after 4, would just make them way less enjoyable.
You can beat 1 in less then 8 hours (probably closer to 6 if you don't care for collectibles), 3 can be beat in around 10 hours without much rushing and 2 isn't much longer either.

Well, I recently bought the Nathan Drake Collection since I found it dirt cheap and replayed all the games in a week. Don't feel burned out or anything, on the contrary I am way more hyped for UC4 now. Each game's story is self contained so it's not like your missing out on an overarching saga like Mass Effect, the only thing that carries on and develops between the games is the relationiship between the three main characters (Nate, Sully and Elena).

Also the games are not that long. UC1 is like 8 hours and the other 2 games are like 12 hours each, so you can treat the whole collection as 30 hour long game.

Let me rephrase that: I don't see why soft body modelling would be needed for those animations.

Are you serious? Every single drop, turn, jolt affects the characters in the car. You think every single one of them is animated by hand or pre-captured? That would be an insane amount of work especially when they'd have to account for the fact you can drive anywhere within the space available. ND have said it's physics based, so there's that too ...

Actually, based on the Game Informer preview a long time ago, the game does seem to use some form of tessellation on water. He was wrong when he claimed that there was tessellation on rocks. Also, I agree with you, day and night system sounds like bullshit unless he means it's scripted and not dynamic transitions. I don't know how the GI solution works, but I highly doubt it's fully real time.

I haven't been following this conversation, but that .gif doesn't show soft body physics. It shows dynamics (maybe), but soft body physics has to do with simulating deformable physical objects. Things like cloth, or a squishy ball, or metal bending etc. The animation could be driven directly by dynamics, or it could several animations that are layered and weighted depending on the motion of the jeep.

I switched to an alt account to ditch my embarrassing tag so I could be an embarrassing Naughty Dog fanboy in peace. Ask me anything!
I am going to miss these characters so much. I am not ready...

Also I hope we get less of UC3 Elena and go back to UC1 and UC2 Elena who is so much more fun

Looks like the ending has already leaked. That is why I was aprehensive about going gold so much earlier than its release date.

From the other thread, credits to user xenorevlis:

Nathan and Elena end up together after losing everyone they know to a cataclysmic event within a region of South Africa that infected several people. Nathan appears to have been infected as well, but the signs wear off and they try to live the rest of their lives in peace. After a rough year later, a brightness comes to their life as we find Elena in the hospital, and she gives birth to... a humanoid Bandicoot!

The flashlight when used in the cave and in the new story trailer is using realtime dynamic GI. This light source is dynamic GI. I cna't confirm that about the otehr light sources in open areas like the sun.

.

Also, he points out POM with self-shadowing that I could not possibly see at all from any of the angles in the footage gamersyde put up. Rather, normal maps for ground detail was overly evident:

Yeah, ND is supposedly using self shadowed POM in the game since it was in the tech slides, but it definitely wasn't in the preview footage. Sounds like NXGamer making wrong assumptions again.

I know the flashlight seems to be using some form of dynamic GI, likely an enhanced version of the one from TLOU, but GI is still mostly baked in the environments. However, I'm still curious how exactly they do the color bleeding on the jeep and characters in the preview footage.

I would link it, but Dualshockers is banned here unfortunately. Just search Uncharted 4 GDC and you'll find an article posted three days ago. There is an image showing POM in there.

Yeah I just checked it (dunno how I missed that article) there is clearly ncie POM in those pics. Article is : PS4 Exclusive Uncharted 4 Gets Fantastic Environmental Images, WIP Videos and… a Working Watch

There is also an older article from GDC called: Amazing Uncharted 4 Pictures Show Environments and More; Naughty Dog Talks Texture Design at GDC.

I think I know what image you're talking about. Probably it's only going to be used in tighter areas.

Wow the watch really works.
Take that Neogaf !

At the end of the video, they show really advanced metal deformation on the cars. This game has undoubtedly the best physics engine in any game.

I would watch the cutscenes of the first and play through 2 and 3. Honestly the first one is a drag. The second one might be the best PS3 game there is. Im now playing through the third and i love it so far. Graphics are insane knowing this came out a generation ago.

Oh, I completely missed what it meant then. I thought that was what NX Gamer was talking about lol.

NXGamer has been throwing this soft body physics in Uncharted 4 thing around for a very long time now. Now I'm no expert in this, but those who are have corrected him many times.

So is it true Uncharted 4 is an open world MGS5 game now? I saw the joke video and all throughout I was hoping it was a MGS5 mod but apparently all the footage was real and just the audio was added.

What, so you watched a joke video and thought it was serious? Is that the joke? :p

In all seriousness, no. It's not true at all. Uncharted 4 and MGSV do have some striking similarities in gameplay, but UC4 is most certainly not open world. The scale is increased immensely over previous games but that doesn't automatically make it open world.

Reminds me of Joel when he says he was never a fan of video games in TLOU. That got a kick out of me.

It's more like something like Deus Ex, with just really big levels, not just one or two big open areas, with all the missions scattered around. Gameplay wise it has some stealth elements and a few similarities with MGS5, but it's still an action game first, and the stealth isn't anywhere near as deep.
