If racism isn't the point of the piece (which it obviously wouldn't be for BF5) I think portraying racism accurately probably does more harm than ignoring racism and being inclusive as a result. I don't really see what a blockbuster shooter has to gain by accurately including racism.
I guess so, it wouldn't be a big deal if they included other races in combat roles -just saying it can be risky doing so by misrepresenting what was really going on.

I never sad that it is not fresh. But this world War 1 / world War 2 setting is so fucking boring to me. I played all the MOHs, CODs, Band of brothers, and what not. I really liked bf3 with its setting in the "now" or very near future. Black ops 2 was already too futuristic for me though.
Perhaps it's not the setting that's boring but the conflicts in the games? Most just recycled the same battles and fronts

We never really got a big budget WWI game anyway

Found my glasses. Definitely looks like a black man to me.

What is the explanation that they give about why WWII started?

History is all about context and perspective. From the perspective of America, we truly entered World War 2 after the events of Pearl Harbor.
i.e. World War 2 started for the US because of Pearl Harbor.

Before this, the thing that is mostly discussed is Hitler's rise to power in post WW1 Germany

Is this a serious question? Shaved heads on a soldier are like a standard. Pretty much every war movie ever has the mandatory scene of the soldiers all sitting in a line getting their heads shaved.
And there really is no "look" of a shaved head. A shaved head is a shaved head is a shaved head.

I don't think you ever see that in a World War 1 film. I could be wrong. Also, looking at photos of soldiers in World War 1 I don't see many with shaved heads. His look doesn't seem to quite fit what a soldier would look like during WW1. Maybe that's why a lot of people are suggesting it's alternate reality.

Was this really called for?

What I am trying to say is that neither in Europe is a big part of the educational system. That part of history is mostly focused in WWII, just like many other periods of history are not covered for all countries/civilizations.

The last 100 years of history are probably the most important for our society in my opinion. Not having the interest of knowing why the first WW happened is as weird as that people that have no idea why WWII happened or which countries fought in it. Maybe is just me. (I don't pretend to sound like an asshole, sorry if I sound like that).

The best part of these threads are and will continue to be the "Wtf, don't you people know anything about WW1?" posts.

Little hint: Nah they probably don't. WW1 gets no respect in typical US education. It's basically "Things were messed up, trenches and gas for 4 years, BUT YO LEMME TELL YOU BOUT HITLER THOUGH."

This

Literally all the US schools go over on WWI is Archduke Franz Ferdinand, trenches, and how it lead into WWII.

Interested in the game, BF3 & 4 remains some of my favourite multiplayer games but a WW1 setting seems kind of in poor taste. It wouldn't necessarily work as a FPS unless you jazz it up, but then you're glorifying one of the worst wars ever seen. Not saying you can't have games in that setting but give it the credence it deserves (Valiant Hearts does fantastically well in this regard). I only hope EA/DICE does do that rather than give it the AAA big budget guns and explosions treatment seen in past single player Battlefield campaigns.

Anyone discussed the race of the fellow on the pic? Gotta be alternate timeline right? In WWI most african-american troops were put on labor battalions.

(can't find my glasses, eyesight is shit, so I'm sorry if I'm mistaken about his race)
Looks like the white dude from the teaser.

ALSO

May 6th. 1937. the hindenburg zeppline crashed as well.

Today is May 6th

If it's Alternate Timline, I want the Hindenburg to be a military weapon of mass destruction. With one of the missions being to infiltrate and destroy it.

...Operation: Hugh Manatee

Make it happen DICE

WW1 is barely, if at all, covered in American schools from my experience so not surprised at people being confused about it.

No one wants to remember WW1 in the US. It was basically our Vietnam before Vietnam, and one of the key reasons the western front in WW2 wouldn't have happened without Germany stupidly declaring war on the US + a leading cause for why the US turned so isolationist following the end period of the war.

There's no good memories to that war, just pain. Thus most like to focus on the positive, internationalist and interventionist US in WW2 without the context of WW1. A lot of people in europe tend to forget there's a giant ocean between us, and for most of US history the US was more than willing to let Europe continually destroy itself over and over again without spilling American blood in the process. Some fear that letting such a message spread would further cause isolationist feelings spreading in the US. On the otherside, spinning history to make us feel good about getting into WW2 has its numerous downsides. Because we forgot about WW1, boneheaded decisions in Greece, Korea, and Vietnam followed after WW2.

US world history is a complicated and multifaceted subject that boils down to more than "muricans weren't in WW1 so they don't care", even if that is more convenient for the ignoramuses of this board to float in order to feel better about themselves. Truth is the US played a major role in both wars, and especially important in WW1 as the US entering in on the allied side effectively ended the war.

I don't get the negatively. I'm very highly intrigued by a WW1 setting.

Yeah, it could be done really well. My only problem with WWI is boring ass weapons and boring vehicles etc. It could have some great set pieces for a SP campaign but MP is clunky when WWI and a lack of technology comes into play.

not to go into racism or nothing like but the dude is black. the western front did not use much colonial troops on that theater, I think. If this game plays like the recent Verdun most people will hate it.

and since this probably is usa saving the world, it just don't make any logic.

As long as they make aircraft fun to play again (if there are any in the new game), I'm in. I don't want none of those slow ass jets with lock-on BS from BF3/4.

But there is nothing in that keyart that would suggest it isn't WW1. So I don't know what you are trying to say.

Also, have no clue what RA2 is.

I am trying to say that whilst this maybe set in WW1, it certainly doesn't mean that its necessarily the WW1 we know of.

RA2 is Command & Conquer Red Alert 2, which is an RTS set in an alternative "modern" time where hitler was killed before he started WW1 in the first game. The Soviet bomber aircraft is a zeppelin.

Literal walls of explosions and hailstorms of gunfire was like the bread and butter of the WWI front. If anything this is the game that will have the most explosions yet

So far i know in the netherlands nothing was learned about WW1 either..we only learned from WW2. I needed to learn about WW1 when i saw a book in the library years ago. And believe me people are not going to like this game because it is WW1 and it isn't WW2.

Holy shit this is beautiful. It could end up being a burning trashpile but at this point I'm on board for literally any setting that's not near future or modern day.
I wouldn't mind modern day if someone would bother to try to tackle it in a serious manner. We've got like Spec Ops. And that's it.

It's an alternate reality WW1, so historical accuracy doesn't really matter too much.
