I thought Evil Within didn't sell well.

According to wiki, The Evil Within was the second best selling game in the United Kingdom for all-formats during the week of its release.

In the United States, the game was the third best selling game of October 2014. The game set the record for the highest-selling first month of sales for a new survival horror IP, but the record was later broken by Dying Light, when it released in January 2015.

So pretty good I guess.

Im afraid Capcom is here to make money, not great horror game. And it has been proved that horror genre is a lot smaller and niche than action. Even by RE name, the action version sell a lot more than previous horror title. The best we might get out of this is action title with more horror atmosphere.

And showing REmaster and RE0 sale number doesnt prove anything. It sell well for decade old classic remaster, but absolutely far from AAA title ( we are talking about 1M- vs 6-7M here ). I seriously doubt Capcom or anyone with a right mind will see that as a potential, at least for the main title that already shifted its focus to a bigger chunk of audience.

Oh wow and I just notice someone mention that RE4 is bad. Now we are discussing this matter with the people who has a super close mind. I doubt we would go anywhere with this. I mean horror wise RE4 feel more scary/intense than some previous horror RE title. Like seriously, some people even mention about bringing back fixed camera!

People who still believe the new game will go back to survival horror. Here are some facts.

Best selling Resident Evil games

1. Resident Evil 5 - 7m
2. Resident Evil 6 - 6.5m
3. Resident Evil 4 (Wii/GC/PS2) - 5.9m
4. Resident Evil (PS1 All) - 5.08m
5. Resident Evil 2 - 4.96m
6. Resident Evil 3 - 3.5m

Anyone looking at the sales chart and planning their next game won't ever touch the original trilogy. In best case, we might get something akin to Resident Evil 4.

Capcom is one to ignore facts. DMC4 was the best selling entry in the series and they decided to reboot the series.

It didn't exactly light the charts on fire either TBH. Maybe they had some lofty expectations for it because it was the first time the series had a simultaneous multiplatform launch, yet the sales barely improved from its predecessor which was exclusive to PS2.

Best selling DMC games

1. Devil May Cry 4 (PS3/360/PC) - 3m
2. Devil May Cry 3 (OG+SP) - 2.3m
3. Devil May Cry - 2.16m
4. DmC - 1.7m
5. Devil May Cry 2 - 1.7m

Compare this to the sales of RE series and the difference is huge.

Everybody every where trash RE6 and RE5 somewhat but they sold so much? How? Did I miss something. I am not a RE fan btw, out of Capcom's list of IP's it's near the bottom for me.

RE6 and RE5 are awesome games and they were highly praised in the mainstream market.

I'd like to see a new RE that is a completely new story, no Umbrella or anything. Rather a new SERIOUS horror game that has MYSTERY to it's story and things that you simply do not know and have to uncover over the course of playing the game.

I loved RE1 and 2, never could get into the "actiony" RE's later on. I wanted a griping story-driven game but they just went so far with the umbrella story and action elements that it lost me.

Give me back the suspense and thrill I felt in the first two games with a new storylin I say.

Given this thread regardless of how RE7 looks a bunch of people are going to be pissed and a bunch are going to be happy. I'm curious as to what it looks like. It can't be any worse than the reaction to Umbrella Corps.

I don't know, horror these days doesn't mean what it used to. I suppose it couldn't get any worse than 6 though. Cautiously optimistic

You're missing the part where DMC4 did better than predictions and achieved a majority of its sales considerably faster than DMC3 did. Looking at what DmC was supposed to do (expand the audience while appealing to old fans) it clearly failed in that regard.

DmC belongs to a different era of "westernization of Capcom" anyway. An experiment that went horribly wrong. They won't experiment and reboof flagship IPs now.

Really hoping for some Zombie action. Didn't really feel the stuff after 3, liked 4 and 5, but not as a survival Horror. Always wanted it to go back to the zombie roots.

I really can't understand how RE6 did those numbers...

For the first time I hope a series I love is Rebooted... cause now it's a huge mess... RE5 could have finished the story
with Wesker death and Umbrella out of the games...
...

Let's see what they propose.

Anyway how can be compared sales from the PS1 era to sales of PS3 era?

The market has changed a lot, i think PS1 sales must be considered a lot stronger with these numbers... (also they consider the sales of the digital version on PSN?)

You can't really compare 3 and 4 like that when the PS2 was a massive juggernaut that had far more consoles out there(when DMC3 launched) than the PS3/360 combined when DMC4 came out, the game actually beat what they were expecting it to sell.(which was 1.8 million)

It's really not. Some of the latest individual games have poor stories, but they're self-contained and don't reflect too much on the overall mythology. Meanwhile everything is consistent. They're still able to create compelling story content in that universe judging by Revelations 2, The Stage, Heavenly Island and Umbrella Corps.

Good point, I never thought about it like that. DMC3 came close to the end of the PS2 lifecycle, while DMC4 came out a little over a year into the PS3 lifecycle and a little over 2 years into the 360's lifecycle. Then you look at DmC and it came out at the very end of the PS3/360 lifecycle and pretty much bombed.

Back to horror roots?

As long as it's more like RE4 than RE6 I'm oke.

If you aren't willing to compare it to DMC3, then there is the OG DMC which was a launch title afaik yet sold almost as much as DMC3.

I think it is safe to say that the remaster of DMC4 shows the approach Capcom will take for the future of the series. They put a lot of work into it so maybe they are continuing it.

If true, I don't think they're going to use fixed camera angles but they know that the 3rd Person View makes getting headshots easier so if they don't take the "easy" way, how do they evolve RE without the 4 formula? If they manage to do a new direction, gameplay wise, it might also elevate the genre itself. Exciting times if my prediction comes true.

I expected these changes ever since they released screenshots for RESI 5 - terror soaked in sun. Turned out to be just a clone of 4... and then 6 came. Not to mention two low budget Revelations - solid games but not mainline entries.

More importantly are we going to see what the 2 remake looks like? I hope 7 goes back to it's roots but at the same time I don't quite know how that would work in today's market. Zombies aren't really scary, and if they want to go the 4 route (which I actually consider pretty comedic) then they really have to build an original idea from the ground up. I don't see modern capcom able to do it honestly.

They'll never go back to fixed cameras and tank controls, that's for sure. They'll try to make the game slower and more atmospheric and come up with some crappy half-assed attempt at horror like RE Revelations.

Or maybe this is just good old Capcom bullshit and the next game will be over the top action, hopefully.
