Rumor: Xbox Streamer ($99), Xbox TV ($150-$175), Xbox Mini, & Xbox 2017 coming, more

OK listening to the archive with headphones. Will update as I go.

2. Chromecast "Super-Streamer" Xbox. (~$99)
3. Second Xbox streaming device: a bit bigger "not an Xbox One crammed into a tiny box". This is more of a replacement for those who would buy 360 as a media box in 2015. He thinks this device will leverage the Windows Store to play "lightweight" games (~$150 -> ~$175)

2. What does that mean?
3. Who? No, seriously. Who?

And neither have set the world on fire. I think at this point people already found something that streams their content. Offering W10 apps isn't going to get people to care anytime soon.

Not everything has to "set the world on fire". It's an additional device to compete in a place where MS see competitors encroaching (which I think was the whole reason that OG Xbox was created in the first place).

"Offering W10 apps" is looking at it from a technology perspective. From a consumer perspective, you get Netflix, Sky, 4OD, Hulu, whatever, plus the xbox app which gives you the ability to stream your xbox to it.

I must stress here this is pure speculation from me, reflecting what the podcast said. No insider stuff.

These smaller xbox devices will only work if there's real first party support for them from a gaming perspective. I don't think just the apps part of xbox one is enticing enough.

Why brand a streaming stick with the Xbox name unless it comes with a controller and can play arcade level games and stream disk based games.. basically Microsoft's version of the Playstation TV?

Would I be able to stream from a regular Xbox One to the new streaming stick?

My point is similar. Give me streaming XBO (if the main console is not in use) and otherwise give me some apps which include Netflix.

I can then move Apple TV to the spare room.

I'm not liking the direction Sony and MS are going as a console gamer. Nintendo NX and new console reveal was expected after Wii U sales plummeted. However, at least this should shake things up and to the loser an early exit from console industry. Seems all players are putting their eggs in one basket and only one of them will truly have golden eggs.

1. "Xbox Mini is Real"
2. Chromecast "Super-Streamer" Xbox. (~$99)

4. Details get fuzzy at this point for Brad. Does not think MS will go for 4K gaming yet. Thinks the next system will be more of an iterative step.
5. Xbox becoming a platform. MS playing around with bringing the Xbox interface to PC (Redstone 2 related). Think Media Center for games. Speculation: "think further down the road - what if Xbox becomes software?"
6. Microsoft focused on "extensible" systems. It's the "magic" word in Microsoft right now.
7. Brad thinks MS will do something "Big" for the next Xbox in 2017. Thinks the Eurogamer article is "onto something" but thinks they have their wires crossed in some respects. MS doing "crazy" stuff. VR may play a part.
8. MS knows gaming is the "bread-and-butter" for Xbox and will show that at E3 but still want to "attack the living-room" and appeal to cord-cutters. Xbox One is currently too expensive/big for that audience.
9. Updated controller that will look mostly the same. Minor revision.
10. PC gaming big for Microsoft and E3 will reflect that. Look to see MS continue to try and bring Xbox and PC together.
11. Thinks we could see a revision/upgrade (minor) to the current Xbox One but is fuzzy on that.

Why not just throw an Xbox handheld, Xbox phone, Xbox tablet, and Xbox hairdryer into the mix? Might as well.

This brand is really going to diluted at this rate, and they'll end up needing to be more clear than ever in their message if they don't want to make the same mistake Nintendo did.

Yup.

I was never a fan of the branding of "XBox Music" (now Groove) . It was kinda... "Xbox is games, not music!" to me.

Because people like consoles and don't like stuff like:

edit: You can also make the opposite point: why build your own PC just for gaming, if MS is going to release a new state of the art xbox every couple of years (per Kotaku rumour)

I really hate the idea of a new Xbox every two years. Consoles will never be state of the art, technology just moves so fast these days that it will be outdated by the time it gets released. People who want the latest and greatest graphics will continue to simply switch out their graphics cards in their pc's.

I still *think* he is wrong. Here is my interpretation on everything that was rumored and found (FCC and Anatel stuff):
- the Nano stick thing is probably true
- the Lunchbox sized device IS in fact the Xbox One Slim with full gaming capability
- He confused the Xbox 1.5 with this Xbox One Slim

So 2 new devices this year and the big upgrade next year.

Yeah this makes the most sense.

Apple TV has had an app store for what, a year now? It plays all kinds of games, streams all of the same media and has dozens of quirky apps but it simply hasn't taken off. It even has a motion controller with a touchpad.

What makes you think the W10 app store will genuinely entice people more than that thing did?

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.
Sounds like the Xbox TV is going to be an Nvidia Shield TV alternative. I may get it if it's around $150.

I wonder if Sony is going to release something similar to this as well, to offer another device for their Playstation Vue service.

Imagine the Roku and the Chromecast, but instead with Xbox written on the device.

Thanks! So, Roku and Cast, but not with XB1 games playable on it?
2. Chromecast style "Super-Streamer" Xbox. (~$99)

This update from the OP makes it sound like...unclear as to whether it would play much in the way of games.

And if neither of those are for XB1 games, what will become my lowest-priced entry point into the XB1 ecosystem?

Personally I don't think people buy these apps because of the store. I believe people buy those devices to watch Netflix (that's why I want one) and access their other media content... "What's the cheapest small device I can buy that lets me watch my stuff?" - MS has no answer in this space at the moment.

If it can also stream PC and XBox games then that's an awesome value-add and it then competes with SteamLink too.

Consoles are dying people, despite what all your PS4 user base numbers say everything will eventually transfer to platforms through small streaming devices.

All of this seems like a very resource intense ramp up to the Xbox One+. I'm sure MS will throw the OG Xbox One into the deepest hellifre once the successor is out.

This E3 is going to be Batshit INSANE

I can't believe Nintendo is just sitting it out while all of this is going on...

I always expected the EOL for the Xbox 360 was a small, disc-less, all-digital device that was positioned as a streaming box like a Roku - with all the added benefits of a huge, mature existing game library for those who wanted that. I really thought they would do this five or six years ago.

Seeing how people are starting to get rid of their Xbox, I was wondering what the trade values for these consoles were right now.

Sure, but to me it just sounds like another one of Microsoft's ventures into an already crowded market segment with a me-too product. I mean, I think people's needs in that space are served already. There's Chromecast, there's Apple TV, there's SteamLink and 6000 different kinds of streaming boxes in all kinds of price ranges.

I get that it might be necessary for Microsoft to have W10 on every device, but to me it just sounds like they are just going to be late to the party with a me-too product because their cross-media strategy demands it, not because of actual consumer interest/demand.

Yeah, these are just leveraging the Xbox name as an entertainment brand instead of being Xboxes, similar to how the Kindle Fire TV is not an e-Reader.

And if neither of those are for XB1 games, what will become my lowest-priced entry point into the XB1 ecosystem?

Presumably the Xbox Mini, which is a slim model releasing this year.

Damn MS dropping Xbone faster than Nintendo the Wii U would certainly be something. Ballsy if true.

Sony slaying them is what is forcing their hand into taking drastic measures. A few years ago Xbox was the only "popular" brand they had left, it may not have generated as much income as the other brands under MS. At least it did not have the reputation IE and Windows 8 had. Ever since Windows 8s failure they have tried to make Xbox look like Windows to somehow give a better perception.

Would I be able to stream from a regular Xbox One to the new streaming stick?

This would be the only conceivable reason it would cost anywhere near $100 when it is an Xbox branded Chromcast/FireTV. Being able to stream your existing (and future) Xbox hardware to any TV in your home without needing a PC or another Xbox to play games on would get me to buy at least two of these proposed sticks.

WTF does this Xbox Mini thing do? Is it just a streaming stick like all the others that gives you access to movies you buy from the MIcrosoft store or something?

I mean, that is one crazy crowded competitive market. I want to know what an Xbox branded streaming stick brings to the game that would make people want it over a Roku, Firestick or Chromecast.

Microsoft doesn't necessarily have a solid game streaming tech at the moment (ala PlayStation Now). Maybe you can message/respond to your Xbox Friends and check achievements or something with it and stream your Xbox One or PC to your TV screen with it? I cant think of much beyond that.

Easy. Got an Xbox console on your local network? Plug the stick into a TV in another room and stream Xbox games to that TV over local network? They already have the tech.

Spinning off the Xbox brand into streaming sticks that don't do games sounds like a bad idea. I think people will either stick to their Xbox One or simply get a Chromecast or Apple TV.

I feel like a Chromecast competitor at $99 USD misses the point of why the chromecast was popular in the first place... perhaps it'll be positioned more like a steam link/pstv type device

Man I am so pissed about buying my xbox one. No point in selling it now until we see how it plays with all of these other devices. Honestly I'm probably done buying MS gaming devices, I'll just stick to PC for MS stuff.

eh.

they usually do better deals.

Like right now, there's a deal where you get $250 for an X1 or PS4 if you trade it towards a new console.

Microsoft has come right and said they are working on game streaming, publically discussing how they had Halo 4 streaming to a Windows Phone. It's come up in stories in 2013 and 2014.

I wouldn't be surprised if game streaming is coming, too. The chromecast-like device would make a lot more sense as a Xbox device.
