Insomniac on lack of Sunset Overdrive 2: Ask Microsoft, may continue w/o them one day

Is there a straight forward explanation of the deal they have with MS?
In assuming it's similar to the ryse or Alan wake deals. Console exclusivity. They keep the ip. MS gets right to first refusal on a sequel. And they can put it on the PC with MS blessing

Insomniac obviously wants to work with them again (me thinks). Up to MS to make the first move though. Else they'll get tired of waiting and move on to someone new. Reminds me of my love life.

Don't be like me MS. Make the first move!

Man MS is truly shit at making new 1st party IPs.

This game was GOTY 2014 and there is no sequel on the horizon.

No sequel will ever be made for Quantum Break or Alan Wake. Or D4.

Zzzzz =/

I'm all for diverse lineups, creative intellectual properties and unique exclusives on Xbox seeing as how I have one. But I just did not enjoy playing sunset overdrive. I don't know, it just didn't grab me. People seem to be passionate about it though so a new title wouldn't be a bad thing. I wouldn't purchase it but it seems like it has an audience. Maybe MS doesn't think that audience is large enough though.

Great news. Your loss MS.
That is why most of the times is better that the developers keep the IP.
Now, Phil, can sell the Scalebound IP already?

I mean, they tried, and all of these games were either good or great.

The problem was the market that didnt embrace them

A perfect example of the difference in approach between Microsoft and Sony.

Sony sticks with franchises that aren't immediately blockbuster hits because they believe in the longer term benefits and rewards of having diversity in their catalogue and for their brand.

Microsoft focuses on a couple of IPs and drop so many promising franchises - Alan Wake, Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, etc. - after one entry. One and done Microsoft. One and done.
Which franchise that were sales fail and Sony still stuck with them?

I have a feeling once Insomniac releases their Spider-man game it does gangbusters. They'll be able to do anything they want.

Clearly not. There was the existing relationship between Sony and Insomniac, and Insomniac openly stated that they chose Microsoft to publish Sunset Overdrive because it let them keep ownership of the IP. If Sony would have offered the same deal, you'd think Insomniac would have chosen them.

But what is the point in owning the IP if you can take it elsewhere? Hell a PC version should have at least been on the table. Man the success of Skylanders really messed with them.

As much as I love Quantum Break and like Sunset Overdrive, making a sequel for a game that doesnt sell well at all would be quite the risk

Gravity Rush 2, Tearaway to an extent

To be fair I don't think either of those had the budgets that Quantum Break, Alan Wake or Sunset had.

Phil just has to channel his inner Tom Cruise. Do it!

Quantum Break was front and centre from the very beginning with Xbox One, it's frankly amazing to think it probably won't get a sequel.

I don't really get the response. Telling GI to ask Microsoft about a sequel, but then saying they may do it without them anyway is weird.

Sunset Overdrive is seriously one of my favourite games of this gen so far, so I really hope this isn't just lipservice.

Fingers crossed it also comes to PC this time.

this is arguably the reason to own an Xbox 1 since everything is on PC as well. It would be stellar if they could sequel it up and release it at least to PC so a broader audience has access to it. I don;t have the foggiest how much it would cost to build it out for PC but I imagine if..ah fuck the windows store... well, shit... I mean if they didn;t put it SOLELY on the windows store(PC game sales cyanide)...well whatever I mean it would increase the overall profitability of the game regardless and on the Windows store MS makes a bigger chunkaroo and more likely to the sequel...unless the numbers were terribad on bone.

Xbox botched this gen early on ( could change)and any solely Xbox game was going to do reduced numbers. ..at least give IPs a fighting chance by windows releasing.

They're not making the game without Microsoft because Microsoft is the only one with the investment in the IP to put even more cash into a sequel to a game that didn't sell that well.

To me, this game always looked like a better version of Saint's Row IV. Including (crucially for me) an amazing character creator. Always bummed that this never made it to PS4, really hope they revive it.

One of the best games on Xbox One also has the best character creator of this gen as well imo. If you haven't played this you're really missing out on a gem. They really could have refined a lot in a sequel full city 4 player Co-op would have been amazing.

How and why MS sent this game out against the fall's massive releases I'll never know. A feb./march release and this game would have done a lot better imo.

My read between the lines (which, granted, may essily be completely wrong) is that while Microsoft may not own the IP, they probably own some sort of publishing rights (e.g., right of first refusal) which keep Insomniac from approaching other publishers at the moment. Perhaps in time those rights will expire or revert back to Insomniac, at which point they may do as they wish with the IP.

Just spitballing here.

A couple of thoughts on this:

I expect MS own the publishing rights on the IP and a sequel cannot go ahead without them until a period of time has passed - if I had to guess I'd say five years. After that point Insomniac will be free to port the first game if they wish and create a sequel with another publisher.

I doubt they have capacity to develop a sequel right now anyway, as I believe much of the studio is tied up with Spider-Man, and it makes sense that a lot of the same creative folk are working on that game. As I understand it, Sony and Insomniac are in for multiple Spidey games (which probably means three, initially).

QB was also super mediocre. Ugh. Just not very good.

I liked it a lot, but I think a sequel could improve on many things - same with Sunset Overdrive, which I actually thought was just mediocre.

But yeah.. Quantum Break has felt like a real centrepiece for Xbox One since the start, that's why - even disregarding sales, quality of the game etc. - it's surprising to me they wouldn't continue with it as a series.. :s

Why ask MS, when you own it?

You can't blame MS for everything.

Insomniac, if you believe in the IP, put your money down and go multiplatform.
