Puyo Puyo Tetris coming to Americas and Europe

The fact is what Eurogamer reported, as of today, is still completely true for Europe.
There isn't a single game for the Switch that's cheaper digitally.
You had someone who apparently is a developer claiming that Switch cards are expensive in the Rime thread.
True that you can't believe in everything that people say on the internet but once again, everything seems to point to what Eurogamer said, at least in Europe.
Maybe Nintendo America doesn't enforce the same rules of Digital = Physical, we don't know but Eurogamer has a good track record with this sort of thing.

As Reggie said, they can choose their own pricing and they decide what to do with that. Cards are more expensive than discs, we all know this, but $10 more expensive? No way. It's obvious that this doesn't have to happen, so you EU guys are getting taken for a ride. Do the right thing and buy from the other shops in the world and don't support this price gouging stuff.

No digital on PS4 is fucking stupid. No purchase.
I feel the same.

I know that it's not Sega's doing but I have no intention of going back to buying disc based games after being download only for over five years so they are losing a sale here. Although I'd happily have bought it, it's not as if I'm in a desperate hurry to own another Puyo Puyo game and the Tetris license tends to change hands pretty rapidly so it may well turn up at some point.

Oh shit, I totally forgot that I have Puyo Puyo 2 on this:

It's a port of the System C-2 arcade game. http://system16.com/hardware.php?id=705

Off topic - The same arcade board was used for this.

I brought my switch to a small dinner party with friends last night so they could check it out. None of them are really gamers anymore but they wanted to see what Nintendos new console was all about. We played some snipper clips and bomberman and had a great time before we moved onto the Puyo Puyo JP demo.

Holy shit the Puyo Puyo demo absolutely stole the show. 4 player mode is a blast and everyone loved the quirky art and sound effects. This went from a "hey this looks cool" to a "must buy" for my wife and I.

what is the licensing issue where there can be a Switch digital version but not PS4?

The Tetris Company doles out separate licenses for physical and digital releases based on the platforms the game releases on. Ubisoft has the digital license for PS4, XB1, 3DS and Vita, and because of that, Sega couldn't release the game digitally in Japan on those platforms and Nintendo had to de-list the original GB version of Tetris as well as their more recent take, Tetris Axis, from the eShop worldwide. Since Ubisoft didn't license out the digital rights to make a Switch version of Tetris Ultimate, it was possible for Sega to do that for Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Because Tetris Ultimate (published by Ubisoft) is still available digitally on PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, PC, and 3DS. And since Ubisoft currently holds the Tetris license, this prevents any other publisher releasing their own version of Tetris digitally as well. Nintendo had to delist their versions of Tetris from the 3DS Virtual Console because of this, and Sega can only release it digitally on Switch because there is no other version of Tetris on there.

It does suck that Puyo Puyo Tetris is only being released on PS4 and Switch, especially since it was also released for PS3, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS, and PS Vita in Japan. Everyone else who doesn't own a PS4 or Switch will be missing out.

EDIT: Yup, what Ridley327 said is true as well.

Does anyone know what kind of control options you have in this game? I've been playing the demo and I hope I can map hard drop to a different button in the full version.
The only control scheme that maps hard drop to something other than up are the two Table control schemes, which are very odd control schemes in their own right (movement on the face buttons instead of dpad , for example)

I see lots of digital-only fans in here. Nothing against y'all but this is precisely why I buy physical copies whenever possible. I prefer to control the fate of things I buy, whether keeping, lending, or selling on the aftermarket.

You can still redownload delisted games you already bought.

Uughhh that sucks. Better get used to pressing up then.

Wait, so Ubisoft still has the tetris license for the majority of the platforms in the US? God fucking damn it, I was hoping PPT coming Across The Border meant they lost it.

Oh yeah, is there some way to turn the buttons on the left joycon into a d-pad? lol

I actually love playing the demo with the buttons, so I don't accidentally press up and the piece will go all the way down instantly, which tends to happen to me occasionally on a d-pad..

It seems like they did lose it going forward at least, but they're still covered by the release of Tetris Ultimate previously.

In a perfect world, they've learned their lesson about licensing to a single publisher...

That's good, at least. I guess Tetris Ultimate won't be phased out until someone else is given the license (Sega please?) and makes a "mainline" Tetris game. And it comes to PC, hopefully.

I tried playing Shovel Knight with the d-pad and it was bad for me because it doesn't feel good going left to right. I kind of wish they sold an alternate d-pad version of the joycon for "retro" gamers or whatever.

You can't really assume anything on the Canada eShop, prices are completely random and follow no pattern nor logic.

Hell one of the Tomorrow Corp games is one dollar cheaper for no reason.
I guess so... but it's a Sega after all!

So random question, who's mostly here for the Puyo vs the people here for Tetris? I'm in the latter category. Maybe that could be a poll in the OT. :p

Obviously haven't tried it, but will buttons really be bad for something like Tetris? I can see how a dpad really helps platformers, but I feel like distinct buttons isn't really a bad thing for a very discrete puzzle game.

-The game's featureset makes for one of the most loaded Tetris games in a very long time. (It's actually a downgrade for Puyo Puyo fans, but there's more than enough here to serve as a gateway for newcomers.)

I'm curious, what do mainline Puyo games have that this game lacks? I thought this game had a huge amount of content?

Will the matchmaking be ranked at all?

I remember trying to get the Japanese PC version of Puyo Puyo Fever going and boy was that a rough learning curve with all the really good players.

The buttons aren't bad, but I really wasn't feeling the analog stick.

This is definitely the sort of game that ought to have full control customization. If I could move Hard Drop and Soft Drop from the analog to the face buttons (without having to pick a really bizarre preset to do it), then single-Joycon play probably wouldn't be so aggravating. As it is, though, I don't really have an issue with any other controller. Dual Joycon play is probably fine.

Several more gameplay modes and rule options. PPT basically has two noteworthy Puyo modes (2 and Endless Fever), which is kind of sparse for a modern Puyo game.

Man those AI opponents in Puyo Puyo 2 are basterds. More and likely it's just me because I'm new to Puyo Puyo but fuck they wreck my shit.

I made it to level 3 or 2 before the satan boss battle but man they are relentless.

I'm glad it's not just me, maybe I lost all skill in playing arcade games but fucking hell I get properly battered.

Doh. C'mon Ubisoft. Put down the Tetris license and back away, nice and slow.

(I want it for 3DS. Switch just isn't as portable.)

PP2's single-player mode also starts throwing you 5 colors at a time once you get to floor 3 or so (when standard competitive play has always been 4 colors). It's kind of ridiculous.

Someone tell me again how to download the demo from the Japanese eShop.

Step by step.

Thx!
Go to accounts.nintendo.com

Either create a new account with Japan as your country, or edit your current Nintendo Account and change the Country to Japan.

If you created a new account on the last step, create a new user account on your Switch and link it to the new account.

Open the eShop and choose your Japanese account.

Download the demo. Enjoy!

(If you edited your main account, be sure to change it back)

I guess I've always played with a D-pad so I technically am just assuming it's terrible. lol

In Tetris at least, the split buttons actually seem a lot better to me.
It's nice to not be able to accidentally drop a block because the dpad decided I was a little too close to up.

Yeah I guess I never really done that... but then again I'm not super high level either, so it must become a bigger issue the faster you have to play.

Puyo for me. Tetris DS is all I'll ever need for pure Tetris. And over the last few years I've grown to prefer Puyo Puyo over regular Tetris.

I thought the same thing until I played Blaster Master Zero where I actually preferred the joy-con B-pad because it is much easier to lock in directions as compared to the analog stick or even a D-pad.

I made a separate account to download the demo from the Japanese eShop but now the news on my Switch is all in Japanese, how do I change it back?
