Activision: Crash was #1 best selling physical game worldwide in June w/ only 2 days

Any 3D platformer that wasn't blessed by the god hands of Miyamoto or Koizumi aren't worth it, I suppose. That's what it sometimes feels like here on GAF.
Some people tend to judge every platformer by how it compares to a Mario game.

Crash is more linear than Mario 64.

Sonic the Hedgehog's controls are less precise than Super Mario World.

But the thing is, these characteristics aren't inherently bad. Linearity in Crash gives it a focused platforming identity. Sonic's momentum-based physics reward skill with speed. And the same goes for other beloved platforming games like Donkey Kong Country, Rayman, Spyro, Banjo Kazooie, etc. I have no problem with disliking these games' qualities on their own merits, but so many times they're judged poorly simply because they're different from some Mario game.

Mario is a critically acclaimed, popular series that is responsible for the existence of the platformer genre. But that doesn't mean it should be the perfect model every platformer needs to match.

It's gameplay sought out the demographic it wanted to attract 20 years ago. Hence why it's popular again. I mean prior to the Trilogy it was selling well on PS1 PSN sales.

Dated my bum.

Selling well as in the top 3 best selling PS1 games in EU for practically every week they counted, to be precise. Probably would have been in the top 5 in USA too if they were compatible with Vita

Remember guys, Crash was never big, nobody cared about him.

Yep, and I still remember bashing my head against walls and saying that a Crash trilogy remake was a really safe bet for ATVI

Doesn't matter, that same groups seems to have moved on to, "it's rubbish, not aged well, nostalgia, never very good, not Mario etc"

The funniest thing is that Activision (probably) underestimated how it would performed and essentially it's sold out anywhere you go. I went to the midnight launch party at a local GameStop and they said the preorders were off the charts and barely had any left to give out. Hell, even my local Target and Best Buy are out of stock.

They're probably kicking themselves for not charging full price (although idk how it would've performed if it was $20 extra) and for not banking on Crash sooner but yea, no way is Acti stopping this gravy train anytime soon.

Congrats to Acti, Sony and VV for a wonderful launch! Here's hoping for some more Crash in the future (CTR *wink wink*)!

I'm not sure if people are responding seriously to sarcastic posts about dated gameplay, if those posts are not sarcastic to begin with and the answers are, there is just no sarcasm at all or if it ia all sarcasm 😕😕

Time for Spyro.

If they announce a Spyro trilogy remaster, than it would be amazing if they were to patch a demo into the N. Sane Trilogy and you access it by inputting the PS1 code on the Crash Bandicoot: Warped section of the main menu.

I haven't bought it yet but I am 100% going to. I have a feeling this remaster will sell handsomely for the rest of the year.

Now give us Spyro.

well, they didnt seem to have recognised the power of the brand. so now they know. Hopefully, we'll get a proper current gen sequel.

Crash's problems aren't only linearity. It's clunky controls are what pissed me off back in the day. People saying activision dropped the ball with the crash franchise forget all the games they put out that weren't very good. This trilogy is selling well because of nostalgia for the original games at a great price.

You're out of your mind.

You're late to the meme too, enjoy your freshly served crow.

PS: Linearity is not a problem. Go play your generic fetch filled open world games.

”We’re thrilled that there seems to be a whole lot of people out there who love Crash as much we do,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision.”

LOL, yeah okay buddy. After years of fans clamoring for Crash (and probably Sony knocking a lot on your door too) you put out a remake.

Show your love of Crash and make a new game.

This news makes me very happy.

Me too, especially because it means more Crash will be made and hopefully CTR with full online support will be the next in line!
Finally an outstanding Kart game on a Playstation console, it has been a very long wait for me ;)

Christ, that is amazing. Congrats to the team! I'm looking forward to the developments that will result from this. Whether Vicarious takes a crack at a Spyro trilogy remake, or we get more Crash games, it's gonna be fucking fantastic. And I think it's a fair assumption to make that either one will happen.

Well, I hope so anyway.

the trilogy was great, but my fondest memories are of ctr and crash bash with friends and siblings - these sales are insane and i really hope this means they're on their way

I can see the argument of clunky controls for the first game, which always felt a tad stiff. Crash 2 and Warped though? Gotta disagree, those games play beautifully.

Spyro: Everybody do the Dragon Trilogy
Ape Escape Trilogy
Medievil 1 & 2 Remake / Medievil 3
Alundra 3

Cash it in, Sony.

I need more MediEvil. And they already remade the first game on PSP, just use that as the base, Sony!

What crow is there to serve? I never said the game wouldn't sell well. I also never said I disliked the games.

You can pretty much guarantee a brand new, big-budget Crash game is now in the works as we speak. I think the scale of N'Sane's success has blown everyone away.

It's just a shame that the IP will forever be owned by Activision. Which means that, as sure Crash has made a comeback, he can just as quickly tumble back into irrelevance again. Look how happy Marvel were to see that 13 year Spiderman deal end, so that they could finally prise the gaming rights away from Bobby Kotick.

I'd be there day one for Ape Escape. I'd find some way to break into storage facilities so I could be there day 0 even.

I've never even played a fuckin Ape Escape game either but the concept and the ape designs are so charming and hilarious to me I absolutely adore the franchise. Is there some reason Sony hasn't done any kind of remaster or rerelease of the games yet? Isn't there some rights thing?

Sooner rather than later.

Posting from the NPD thread -

There's also this detail about UK first week:

I'm looking at the actual sales number for Crash and I'm genuinely in disbelief, like is this an error.

Granted its £30 but even so for a June/July launch, that is a hell of a total.

It's already outsold MK8D and it should eclipse Zelda by next week. Insane....

Yeah, CTR must have been greenlit already.
