God of War: Ascension reviews

But it's true, honestly who wanted a prequel?

I have no problems with prequels. It's still a part of the story which has not been told. Just like all the MGS prequels. The core gameplay is still fun, graphics look great and looking forward to the story.

All I'm saying is that its an odd choice to have him review it when he's openly being negative about it before having a chance to play it. I have no qualm with his score.

He's openly wondering whether its existence is really justified, seeing as the trilogy has been completed. He's not the only one who has said something to that effect, and it's not really an unreasonable thing to think.

Besides, he's liked past GOW games and he may be the character action genre "expert" at Polygon.

Ugh, now I'm defending Arthur Gies.

Anyway, if his score isn't that different from other people's scores, then accusations of bias are without merit. Furthermore, some reviewers probably went into the game wanting to love it, some went in not caring about yet another GOW. Metacritic's function is to wash out the positive and negative bias and leave us with an estimate of an unbiased score.

I don't see how the changes to the multiplayer in BLOPS2 made it a Rolex, where the addition of completely new multiplayer and co-op modes to GoW Ascension did nothing to stop game fatigue.

Its hard to argue that different standards in game fatigue aren't been applied here...
I actually agree with your opinion on CoD feeling stale, but I don't think it's unreasonable to imagine someone feeling differently. If you're really into one series or style of gameplay you may be able to tolerate and enjoy a higher quantity of relatively similar games in that series than someone else. One person might call the changes in a new iteration minor while to someone else they are major enough to keep things feeling fresh. A lot of it depends on your personal perspective.

My point is, put away your tin foil hats in fear of a conspiracy.

I don't really think its a conspiracy, just discouraging because that makes it seem like he made up his mind about it before he got a chance to really play the finished product.

Anyway, if his score isn't that different from other people's scores, then accusations of bias are without merit.

I didn't accuse him of bias. Just seems a bit unprofessional to post that, since his job is to review games with an open mind.

Kratos went out with a bang in God of War 3. Ascension really has no purpose to exist (other than to milk Kratos "popularity").

These decent, but way below the series standards scores were to be expected.

Well, it was more of a whimper after that crap ending.

It's improved, but I don't think anyone's going to mistake it for DMC and its ilk.

My problem is that the combat have always felt just flashy and no substance. A lot of the attacks have felt like flinging at air and just a counter being my only witness that I was hitting things. Being stuck in tedious animations and so forth haven't helped either, like when grabbing an enemy for a kill WHILE the other enemies around can still attack you with no way to cancel. I have played through all 3 games so far (and one of the PSP ones) as a fan of the action genre, but never placed the God of War games highly when compared to other games in the genre like Bayonetta (which is a kinda unfair comparison). Not the mention the ungodly amount of annoying QTEs everywhere.

Will maybe give Ascension a chance later on, see if it feels better this time.

Why did this guy review it?

I'm not seeing a problem.

That's probably the case for many people, whether they tweet about it or not. Reviewers are human and humans have preconceptions.

Bullshit. You don't see mainline Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros. or Pokemon games every year.

Uhh...

Pokemon Red/Blue: 1998
Pokemon Yellow: 1999
Pokemon Gold/Silver: 2000
Pokemon Crystal: 2001
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire: 2003
Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen: 2004
Pokemon Emerald: 2005
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl: 2007
Pokemon Platinum: 2009
Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver: 2010
Pokemon Black/White: 2011
Pokemon Black/White 2: 2012
Pokemon X/Y: 2013

Mainline or not, that's a lot of pocket monsters.

When he says the same of a Xbox exclusive there won´t be a problem.

Come on, give it a rest already. The tin-foil hats here are getting ridiculous.

Almost everybody has scored this game a 7-8 range, its clearly not getting the critical acclaim of the mainline GoW games. Play the game, enjoy it, but don't think there's a massive conspiracy to disparage a game that most reviewers agree about.

Yeah, but that twitter post is classless and distorts his review. He is saying from his comfortable seat, that what a ton of developers have been developing for three years better had no existed. For saying that better shut up. Its a lack of respect.

I don't know much about Geis, I had no idea he was supposedly biased towards MS, thats not my issue with the tweet and I dont suspect conspiracy.

I just think its unprofessional to publicly state your preconceived notions about a game you haven't played and then review it. We expect reviewers to have an open mind when they go into it, and I know they're human and thats impossible, but they probably shouldn't be stating that publicly.

Didn't mean to set off controversy with that, just saw it in an old GoW:A thread and thought it was interesting.

I wanted this game. I don't understand why a people and especially professional reviewers would say something doesn't deserve to exist. You can hold that opinion, but I think a lot of press held that opinion about this and Judgment before they even played the game. Press should play games with an open and critical mind. Just because something isn't a numbered release doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

I think his problem is that he is looking for a game that is better than Ninja Gaiden Black which he worships.

Er.. You dont see anyone complain about the score or the reviews from edge, revgames etc right? Aegies is one of the most open console warriors out there so there is nothing wrong with people not paying attention to his reviews.

Hopefully this means that they'll finally stop making gow games or atleast reboot it in a different mythology with a better character than kratos

You mean 7-9 range

Dont get me wrong though. I have no problem with any reviews of the game. These are opinions. I personally cant wait. This is my favorite series in video games.

Eh, I think there is probably some fatigue related to the character Kratos himself. He was a complete ass in GoW3. They really need to move on from. SSM are far too talented to confine themselves to one series.

Can't wait to play this game next week. Sure it may not be masterpiece (although visually it definitely will be) but it is a nice little send off for ps3. Bring on PS4.

So more of the same and playing it safe? Kind of what I was expecting. Not that it's bad but I don't see how you can innovate with the GoW formula other than bigger and more gruesome.

But making Kratos softer isn't a good thing. 8 hrs isn't bad, same as past games. Multiplayer for this never made sense to me.

I always thought God of War 2 was the best in the series. It was so good that it would've been tough for any sequel to top it...or prequel.

GOW fatigue? WOW! And we have a pretty good mp mode now too.

It's been like forever since the last one. I'm starving for more.

I consider GOWs to be the best games Sony has ever made (along with GT of course). They are a blast to play and everything about them is so iconic.

Sony hear me! Keep Kratos and greek mythology (seriously what are those cries for character change in every gow topic? doesn't happen in any other game). Reboot every now and then and just open the world a bit.

I wish I'd played 8 gows this gen...

Oh he is a big time MS guy. Thinks Halo 4 is like manna from heaven. Thinks Gears has better shooting mechanics than Vanquish, Thinks MS approach to gaming as revolutionary, believes Sony's os4 strategy was like seeing MS back in 2005, Arguing defiantly about how third parties are not that happy with the PS4 and how Durango has secret sauce etc.. The guy does not hide it or even try to be subtle about it.

I might be the only person that isn't tired of Kratos. I would be okay with them making a change, but the God of War storyline isn't over yet. If you played God of War 3, you would know that.

I agree with a lot of the criticisms Adam Sessler made. I'll have to try the game for myself.

I would have loved to have seen what Jaffe would have done if he stuck around for all 3 mainline games. It's a shame to see such rich content manner reduced to juvenile storytelling.

Reviewers don't question why a new Halo, Pokemon or FIFA games need to exist. But it happens all the time with Sony games. I guess that's to be expected when you have websites like Polygon reviewing games.

And why shouldn't Halo 4 be a great game, according to you? Halo 4 might have altered or abandoned some core Halo mechanics, but it doesn't make it less than a great game.

Same generic FPS just like other generic FPS's. point and shoot and move on.. No idea why it exists as well.

Scores are about what I was expecting once I heard about so many reviewers getting stuck and because I'm not expecting it to have the same showstopping level of scale and awe as GoW3. I know I'll probably like the game a lot more than most so it's worth it to me.

I'm also fine with games getting criticized for franchise fatigue, just as long as those same reviewers are consistent about it with other games. It just seems like they pull out their real criticisms on games that they don't feel like they'll get as much backlash for and pull punches with other ones (ex. MoH: Warfighter scores vs Blops 2). It remains to be seen if that happened here.

The lack of 3d support from this title is upsetting. It gives me the feeling the title was made by a new team of youngings at Santa Monica... If I were sony I'd contract cory balrog back. Get back some grade A development from the studio.

Also really.. you announce 3d support and remove it. This is not the delivery I expected from a dev powerhouse.

Maybe MS sent them more Halo 4 pizzas and extra funding.

I assume it will depend of the size of the Gears Judgement pizza banner placed on their site.

you are just a hater, you know very well that everyone loves pizza...especially one with MS jizz aka secret sauce
