No New Final Fantasy XV Info at E3 2014

oh well, maybe X will build off of the success of Xenoblade and have a story more in the scale of Xenogears/Xenosaga, and I'll get my epic JRPG fix in the next 3-4 years there instead.

At this point, Square Enix should make a self-aware FFXV, where the game begins at the city area we've been familiar with since the game was unveiled back in 2006, acting as a tutorial stage teaching the player a majority of the gameplay mechanics, which eventually culminates in a large-scale boss fight when suddenly, the game shoots forward 10 years to the present, where Noctis wakes up from this dream as a somewhat grizzled veteran who's "seen some messed up stuff" in his day.

Not really, but it's unfortunate that we won't learn more about the game at E3 :(

Takahashi already stated that the idea behind Xenoblade was for Monolith Soft to distance themselves from the style associated with Xenogears and Xenosaga, viewing the story-heavy approach over gameplay as a dead end. It doesn't seem likely that they would change their minds for X.

I guess Sony saw this coming and sold all SE stocks before the value dropping again?

What does SE even have for 2014, 2015 beside remastered stuff?
LOL...oh man, I guess we shouldn't have bought FFX:RM because SE will now remastered FF13 at this point before releasing a new IP.

I hope what Verendus said is true about Sony having a "FF killer" JRPG in the works. Would love to see this actually be announced AND released before FFXV comes out. Would give Sony a chance to say, "Hey, Square Enix! What took you so long?".

In all seriousness, this wait is a joke, especially considering Square said one of the big things they are now aiming for is shorter dev times. Final Fantasy committee.... shyeah, more like a committee full of ASS!

Square Enix just shot themselves in the foot.I don’t know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I’m an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It’s not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance. What this means is the Japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Final Fantasy 15 for either system, nor will they purchase any other Square Enix games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square Enix has alienated an entire market with this move. Square Enix, publicly apologize and show Final Fantasy 15 at E3 or you can kiss your business goodbye.
Considering what Square Enix has been doing as of lately, not only do they shame themselves, they shame their ancestors AND their descendants. Sakaguchi wakes up every night in a cold sweat because he can feel a disturbance in the force. And for whatever wrong he DID bring to Square(TSW), he was a damn fine leader till the end(moreso than the jokers who've been leading the company since).

Odd thing is, they DID kinda apologize last year. They said they were sorry for the FF series not being up to the quality it has been known for in the past. This almost seemed like they were striving to remedy EVERYTHING wrong they were doing and address it all with careful precision. A year's gone by and we are still stuck in the rut. Even with this sham of a committee formed, it means nothing if no change is made. It's all talk, no action.

This is how it feels. SE dancing around those who wanted and making the most of it.

Well there goes a chance of my December 2015 release date for Japan.

I doubt SE is dancing around. The longer the game stays in development the more money they lose. The only people dancing would be those that get some type of financial benefit from this (for example short sellers if SE stock drops) or people that hate SE.

Big post incoming, please don't quote it all!!
I see some people are unfamiliar with the development of this legendary vaporware, so I decided to make a recap/timeline post for you all to read if you are interested. This has probably been done a dozen of times, but I had some spare time so why not.
Ladies and gentlemen I present you, the wonderous road to the biggest joke of the industry, Final Fantasy XV. It's not really that good though, I'm no Mama Robotnik.

2006

It all started the 8th of May 2006, when a Final Fantasy game called Final Fantasy Versus XIII was revealed at the Square Enix E3 press conference alongside another Final Fantasy game who's name I won't drop (oh yeah, and Agito for "Mobiles"). The word Versus implied that this game was going to take another direction than the more traditional "Final Fantasy XIII" (whoops, mentioned it) the game is supposed to be an action JRPG. The game is being directed by Tetsuya Nomura, character designer for the FF games and responsible for the Kingdom Hearts games.
Both were announced as a PS3 exclusive and were part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis project, fanboys rejoiced and cheered victory for the PS3.

May the 17th brings us another glorious day with some more FFVXIII information, some story and gameplay details were revealed by our lord Tetsuya Nomura. The game was (and still is) handled by the Kingdom Hearts team. Regarding a release date Nomura said that the Kingdom Hearts team was:
"hard at work on the European version of Kingdom Hearts II, so they're only in the art and pre-production phase of development on the PS3 title"
Toriyama wanted to get FFXIII out first and early (lol) as this is the first installment in the series.

May 31, 2006
Popular Japanese magazine Gaimaga interviewed Tetsuya Nomura, the interview contained some information regarding the status of the game:
"Absolutely nothing has been done on the actual scenario. However, I've had the plot worked out for some time, so you could say I'm discussing the plot and concept with the staff. However, we've yet to start actual work on the scenario."
Hyper PlayStation asked why they just didn't made the game into a numerical sequel instead of calling it Versus, Nomura responded with:
"With Versus, we are trying out a type of adventure that we couldn't do in the numbered series."

The internet deservedly hypes themselves up and Square-Enix delivers once again, good times are coming ladies and gents.

November 8, 2006
Nomura discussed the difficulties of working with the new PS3 hardware in the special edition Dengeki PS3 magazine:
"The hurdles are greater than they were in the move from the PS1 to the PS2. We're probably at the point where we could make a PS3 title. However, we're currently researching how to fully tap the specs. Things like real time footage and specifics on areas like the battle system will come once the White Engine is complete. We're currently working hard on the development of the White Engine], and once it's done, we'll have to research what can be done with it. Of course, we do have an idea of what we'd like to do"
Don't expect Final Fantasy Versus XIII anytime soon then..

January the 10th brings us some some tidbits regarding gameplay and story in the latest Famitsu.

March 2, 2007
Tetsuya Nomura reveals lots of story and some gameplay info, he's stating in this Ge-Maga interview that he wants Final Fantasy Versus XIII to be his last numbered Final Fantasy game he works on as a director (

May 5, 2007
The game is sort of.... put on hold?
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=159862
Nomura says he prefers to work on one project at a time which is why he is currently focusing on his mobile game, Monotone at this time. He says he isn't forgetting about Versus but just waiting until he has more free time to begin working on it. He also doesn't want to begin working on Versus quite yet because of the high specifications of the PS3. He wants to utilize all the technology the PS3 contains and produce the game that he envisioned which isn't possible at the moment.

This week Nomura was interviewed by Famitsu, but no new details have emerged. Here's a translation I wrote:

· Nomura was never involved in the creation of any Final Fantasy title as deeply he is right now, and he likes the fact he can take Final Fantasy Versus XIII where he wants it to be.

· Nomura says the PlayStation 3 hardware plays a huge part in the development of both projects, and by using it "all visions can come true". He says that visual-wise both Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII are superior from any former title in the franchise, and they are "close to perfection".

· As in any interview, Nomura was asked about the game's exclusivity. This time he mentioned that the Tokyo Game Show 2007 trailers had the writing "for PlayStation 3 ONLY". He says it's an advantage for one team to concentrate on one console, even if some fans are disappointed.
Looking back at this really makes me laugh..

Nomura addressed the Versus XIII trailer, noting that the staff has at last managed to reach the image they were originally seeking. The trailer has two new characters, but he expects them to undergo some changes in later trailers. He does feel, however, that the main character design is representative of what we'll be seeing when the game shows its true colors next year.
Next year huh? Okay, we shall patiently wait. The 7th gen of video games consoles "just" kicked in.

At yesterday’s Fan Meeting, staff members Motomu Toriyama and Yoshinori Kitase were quizzed on a number of things FINAL FANTASY.

Kitase briefly commented on FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII, the only member of the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation still shrouded in mystery. He says that “Type-0 and Versus XIII have of course advanced to 100% development power.” It should be noted, however that the team has used their know-how from developing FINAL FANTASY XIII in order to create XIII-2 with a much shorter development period, and as such, the reason why it will release ahead of time.

Just Tetsuya Nomura hyping his game up without material once again.
Nomura says that he recently did a walkthrough of the full world map. He also did a check on the game's dungeons and the side paths in the game's towns. He was impressed with how expansive everything is.

When Square Enix announced the development of its "Luminous" next generation engine, some very cruel people joked that maybe Versus would be updated to use it. Actually, the game does use the lightning technology from Luminous, Nomura reveals. However, the game also uses a game specific engine that's specialized for action.

Square Enix, this source added, has also decided to let Final Fantasy Versus XIII die quietly on the vine and fade away, instead of officially announcing its cancellation. Let's just remember that Square released the following FF titles in the last 4 years:

FFXIII
FFXIII-2
FFXIV
LR: FFXIII

That's 4 high profile FF entries releasing within 4 years. It's not unheard of for a game to be in development hell for a decade or so. Let's at least give Square credit for actually releasing these games in a timely manner.

Two of these games are not high profile.
Square royally fucked up announcing Versus when they did. They are the running joke of game development.

Seriously, why do you guys do this to yourselves? I was huge final fantasy fan thru the snes and ps2 days I even managed to trudge thru ffx but by that time sqaure was already a mere husk of its former self. I know it's hard but seriously it's way past time everyone moved on. Just think about the mental gymnastics you'll save yourself from when the game finally launches and you have to convince yourself that the game is actually good (like with ff13) because you've invested so much time and hope waiting for it.

One of the reasons this doesn't upset me anymore is that I have plenty to do in FF14. I'm also really looking forward to the new Theatrhythm and KH2.5 so it's not like I won't have new things to play either.

well depending on your definition of generation it's like one.
I guess the entire FF series came out during the millennial generation... But I was thinking of it this way: if you were 10 when FFX came out, you'd grow up to be an adult who never saw a great FF in his childhood again. But then when you turned 18, another 10 year old at that time would go on to grow up to adulthood without seeing a great FF. :p

When I was a kid, great FFs came out every 2 years. It could sustain me as a fan. Today's kids cannot be held captive by the FF brand because by the time each entry comes out, they will have grown up and moved on to other things...

i just jope at TGS or even Gamescom? they show something, maybe a live gameplay demo
And Square Enix wonders why their sales are dwindling across the sea. No one gives a shit about TGS.. Publications don't even bother sending out journalists anymore for the event.

That's because TGS has seemingly been crap for a while now.

They could probably get away with 30 seconds of new footage too. Well, maybe a minute. Two different battle scenes, some cutscene dialogue, and a brief look at a new area. That's really all they would need to do, so I would hope the game isn't in such a state where they can't even show that.

I have completely lost interest in this game. Square-enix are incompetent seems like the only games they can shit out these days are crappy ios ports.

So why on earth is E3 not the ideal time to show your game? It's just a fucking lie, just tell me the truth.

Well, just guessing here. But has any PS4 game sold over 2 million yet? They need XV to sell 6 million +. They probably have to wait for the install base to grow.

And the next time they show the game, I'd like a release date. I don't really need to see tons of trailers of it. I'm already sold on it. Just need to know when it's ready. Guess it's not ready yet.

They also seem to hold Deus Ex Universe up as a huge title coming up. That will probably show up at E3, among other huge games.

I didn't expect news regarding FFXV until at least TGS anyway. It's probably not close enough for them to show it anyway.

Ya know, the funny thing about posts like this, IF we see more the game, you'll completely go 180 on the game. The thirst will be real IF this game gets real. IF.

oh well, maybe X will build off of the success of Xenoblade and have a story more in the scale of Xenogears/Xenosaga, and I'll get my epic JRPG fix in the next 3-4 years there instead.
It's either that or we get translated Kiseki games from XSEED. You have played Trails in the Sky, right?

Excellent post, SgtCobra. Looking at all the false hope and empty promises in one sitting really cast's SE's problems with the game--and FF in general--into sharp relief.
