Skullgirls DLC Crowdsourcing - Completed, $829,829 raised, 4+1 characters funded

Dat new stage.

The response to the Patron Saint tier has been nothing short of amazing. So to reward everyone’s efforts, we’ve opted to add an all-new “bonus” stage to Skullgirls, completely independent of any stage/story mode goals.

This is an early, very rough concept of the new River King Casino stage. We wanted to show you the entire stage creation process, from rough sketches to final execution. Michiru Yamane has also agreed to let us post work-in-progress versions of this stage’s music, so look forward to that!

A lot could change before now and release, but wanted to show you where we imagined all these new NPCs will be hanging out – a swanky casino!

Bonus Stage: River King Casino!

Edit: Dem new tiers.

$2,500+ : Angel

Everything from the $150 Booster set, plus: All Custom rewards, an “Angel” title in the Contributors Credits.

$5,000+ : Archangel

Everything from the $150 Booster set, plus: All Custom rewards, a custom FoeHammer fightstick designed by the Skullgirls team, an “Archangel” title in the Contributors Credits.

$7,500+ : Divinity (0 of 2 claimed)

Everything from the $150 Booster set, plus: All Custom rewards, a custom FoeHammer fightstick designed by the Skullgirls team, an Evo 2013 trip (airfare and accommodations included - continental U.S. only) to hang out with the Skullgirls team, a “Divinity” title in the Contributors Credits.

Just so it's clear Ravi, I think you should label the tiers that have custom rewards with "Custom" somewhere, so there's no confusion over what you're getting past 2.5k.

There's the PC version stuff in that tier also, but yeah I can see the majority of them being for the hat. Hoping the drive doesn't lose too much...

It probably won't. Some people might feel burned, but most probably won't go through the effort to get a refund.

This definitely isn't a good look though.

Oh no, not the hats D:

Really hope refunds don't take too much of a chunk out of the total. But, knowing how big a deal they are...

I don't see confirmation anywhere that the TF2 hats are gone. Am I missing something? Until there's mention of it, I wasn't going to assume that they were unsuccessful.

Maybe I'm being hopelessly optimistic but after seeing the work in progress for the hat ... I can't imagine someone wanting to donate for it over the game itself. It was far from the best looking hat thats ever graced the game. It is unfortunate though and I do hope there won't be many who'll go in and retract their donations.

Dat new stage.

Edit: Dem new tiers.

*swoon*
If there's anything I value more in a fighting game more than the quality of the fighter itself and the design of its characters, it's the stages. Loving the WIP for this one and am eagerly awaiting to see Squigly's stage show up as well. I'm envisioning a haunted opera house.

New tiers are looking great as well, going to echo the "Please explain what custom rewards are" sentiment as it isn't immediately clear to people who wouldn't otherwise read every other tier.

Hope people jump on the Evo trips and custom sticks.

Don't care about the hat at all. I do hope that they don't get a lot of requests for refunds though. I want them to get as much money as possible to get as much content made.

If you're dropping more than $2K on something, I would hope you read over everything on that page twice.

The Evo tier is limited to two, but the sticks are unlimited. Sucks being a broke college student lol

My Original (SF IV launch) TE, PS3 version, works perfectly.

It's not every single model, it's just certain ones largely won't work. But just to confuse things even further, those faulty models DO work on certain specific motherboards that use a specific kind of USB chip, but I can't remember which. It's not even an issue on the newer sticks.

The lack of a Leviathan hat is pretty unfortunate. It also goes to show how stupid Valve can be some times with their products. They can take ages to do stuff, especially in TF2. It took years for the medals from the ETF2L competitions to make their way into the game, for example.

Definitely a lesson learned by the team, I expect. :\

If a TF2 hat monster throws $30 into a crowd-fund because they want to make money off of the hat, it is their own fault, but they can get a refund if they want.

Looking forward to seeing what the team is going to cook up instead.

I can't help but smile at Painwheel holding the Evo logo for the Divinity tier. Hopefully news spread around that new tiers are available.

Was thinking this in the car today, after 21 hours of no sleep:

Could the Skullgirls model work on a permanent basis?

Sell the game at a low-ish price, use crowdfunding to fund future content, which is offered free for a set period, then at cost afterwards.

Basically a never-ending crowdfunding campaign. I mean if SKullgirls raised $460k in 30 days, but needed another $140k to get that 3rd char, wouldn't another few months of crowdfunding get that figure? The extra char continues interest in the game, so it sells more base copies, and those folks buy the DLC since it's past the time limit.

I think this concept could work.

Where can I see large pictures of these characters? Anywhere?

I think you can a few on Alex's DA page.

Plus there are a couple of more sites of his with even more stuff but I forgot them xp

You can also get those sticks to work using motionjoy.

It connects them? Nice. In my time the only choice was to get a new PCB or USB port, which in the case of my laptop was impossible.

Maybe, but don't forget that for these possibly 3 characters, they are working on minimum pay. Future characters will be more expensive. Plus, I doubt the fanbase would be willing to do this so often.

It depends really on how long people are willing to crowdfund. Ultimately, I'd keep an eye on the forthcoming Torment: Tides of Numenera, which will ask the question "is it possible to crowdfund something while a previous crowdfunded project is still in development?". If it proves to be a "no", then I'd think that this won't work.

Also, looks like the first refunds have gone through: about a thousand dollars just went AWOL.

Well that would be similar to Double Fine's Slacker Backer concept...

Being able to get access to the Steam beta/a copy of the game in advance could be continued after the campaign, anyway.

An announcement about new tiers might be in order?
