I can't believe they doubled down on this BS. If Marvel is going to keep digging this hole deeper, they should at least give him a new costume and name.
I love when Neogaf reveals who actually reads comics regularly.
This isn't even the dumbest thing this year.
This twist makes America Chavez going back in time to WWII more awkward.
It can't be any worse than the time Cap blew up a crackfactory and the crack bonded with his super serum and he ran around high off his tits until they filtered his blood a couple issues later.

I mean, you're not wrong, but at the same time, that doesn't automatically disqualify this as still being dumb.
The convoluted explanation is probably due to Kobik the cosmic cube screwing aroundJust read the spoilers. So if I got this straight:
1: Nazi's won the war, Steve Rogers was a Hydra agent. (Original Nazi timeline)
2. Allies used a cosmic cube to change history, Nazi's lose and Steve is on their side. (Revised Ally timeline)
3. Red Skull uses a cosmic cube to switch Steve back to the Nazi timeline version, operating secretly in the Ally timeline.
Right?
They're getting pretty crazy with Cap's story right now and I get the feeling they're digging a hole that they'll later want to get out of, but I can't lie. The idea of the 'normal' timeline actually being an alternate one to avoid nazi rule is a neat one. The way they arrived at that conclusion was convoluted, though.
I'm so glad I grew out of comics.
He actually is getting a new costume to wear over the course of the event. He will obviously return to normal afterwards though.I can't believe they doubled down on this BS. If Marvel is going to keep digging this hole deeper, they should at least give him a new costume and name.

i wouldnt qualify this as being dumb at all. cap playing everyone like a damn fiddle david xanatos would be proud of is an achievement
From Screengrabs said:He grew up to be a devoted soldier in this twisted, false, villainously-manufactured reality along with other key players, eventually rising to the head of a group calling themselves the ”true" Hydra – not Red Skull's demented version. In recent weeks, Steve even killed Red Skull to assume command, preparing the world for the decades-in-planning Hydra emergence – the aptly titled Secret Empire now beginning.
Wait, so their rationale for Hydra Cap 'not being a Nazi' is being done by trying to 'distance' HYDRA from the actual Nazis insofar as HYDRA 'got in too deep' with the Nazis, and couldn't get out?
It's just some inception stuff, most likely the cube course-correcting its own effects for congruence.
I expect that by the end of Secret Empire, we'll be back to square one and the story will be that the cube wrote a reality in which the cube rewrote everyone's memory, when it really only rewrote Cap's timeline and everything around it, with maybe a tinge of "is it spinning?" at the very end to fuck with people, because that apparently works well.
Meanwhile, we just got an issue where we got to see how deftly Cap just fucked the entire planet.
They did it in Agents of SHIELD and it was AWESOME.
Don't think Skull knew any about this as far as he concerned Kobik screwed around with history for this to happenSeems about right?
I just find myself curious on how the Red Skull would even know about the 'original' timeline in the first place - unless upon gaining sentience, the cosmic cube's personality somehow told him?
I mean......no?
He didn't actually play anyone like a fiddle. It was literally revisionist history. Sure, he might have done that all 'off-screen', but Steve Rogers, as we knew him in the comics, wasn't involved in any of this.
It's (kind of) like Squirrel Girl beating Thanos off-screen. Sure, it's kind of cool, but at the same time, while doing this is her 'schtick', it's most definitely NOT Steve Roger's methodology.
Come to think of it, this is also kinda gross on an actual historical scale, given the origins of Cap back in the 40s. I'm not saying aboslute reverence for the character means leaving him static or anything, but this is kinda nasty.
Edit:
But wait, it's okay guys. He isn't the Nazi version of Hydra...

No they didn't, it is a dumb VR world.
But if we're talking about dumb stuff in comics, here are a couple guns designed for a guy with ten fingers from Daredevil.
This is the sort of garbage that makes me thankful for Image. The only DC I read is All-Star Batman and the only Marvel is Silver Surfer. I don't have time to get caught up in this mess.
I'm so glad I grew out of comics.
Everything should be back to normal by August.
