Codemaster hints at DiRT 4

Hi all,

Lee from Codemasters here, finally got my account activated so I'm able to chip in.

Sorry for teasing you all like that back at the start of the year, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. :p

I've asked this question quite a lot over the last year in various places but not been able to ask you. So here it goes...

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?

1. Pure and proper rally - I don't want X-Games, Travis Pastrana or Ken Bloody Block. I want proper rally with long proper rally courses. Think Colin McRae Rally 2. I'd love some Group B rally in their too.

2. Professional, clean and minimalistic menus. I don't need two arseholes on the main menu 'HEY AL HOW ARE YOU DOING TODAY! YOU CAN UPLOAD TO YOUTUBE!' It makes me want to fuckin strangle them.

3. Cockpit cam - I know you guys learned your lesson for Grid Autosport but I'm just reiterating the point :)

4. More realistic handling. To be fair I thought the handling in Dirt 2 and 3 was pretty damn good so I guess that's not as high up the list. I don't really expect you to go full Richard Burns Rally.

5. This is just a personal thing. I'd love to see Nicky Grist do a co-driver voice again, always loved that in the older games :)

Rally, no Gymkhana, no Ken Block et al, PC version without stupid sys req i.e. optimised, make a Colin McRae type game.

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?

-Be more like the original DiRT with a bigger emphasis on rally cross driving and less on the Gymkhana exhibition stuff.
-Real time weather effects affecting a course of a match aswell as how you control.
-Damage to vehicles to play a bigger emphasis.
-Full cockpit view mode with different levels of view.
-Varied locations and longer tracks
-No cross gen

2. Next gen only.

That's it really.. I love Dirt and think its a good series overall.

Sense of weight and good handling.
Long time trial point to point + fun races against other racers
Good music in loadings and menus (and both must be fast enough)
Awesome graphics.
A bit of love in the pc version.

Obviously, for the love of gods, no integrated DLC neither real money store bullshit.

- focus on rally, longer tracks. Not interested at all in the other disciplines offered (gymkhana,...)
- faster menus (takes way too long to get to actual racing) and faster loading in general
- none of that annoying dudebro stuff
- a more realistic look (tone down color and image filters)
- less DLC and pre-order bonus orientated. Start by offering a solid and complete game. Then offer good DLC if you want.
- support for current gen consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Wii U)

I want proper VR-support if the game hits close to the consumer-release of Morpheus and Oculus. I do not mind graphical downgrades on PS4, I just want that immersion and that awareness for spaces and relation, that only VR offers. If you offer VR; do it right. Invest time in a subtle and functional HUD, in solid, glitch-free and buttery smooth graphics and a perfectly believable and playable cockpit-perspective. I do not need the full campaign and all game-modes with VR. I can imagine this would not be woth the effort that early. Just give me a few tracks and cars and a stunning VR-experience. I want to feel, what my WRC-heroes back in the day felt. I loved the sport back then, when Subaru was a mighty force: I want that. Badly!

edit: a good audio-engine is part of that. I want to hear dirt crackling under the chassis, I want to hear tyres losing grip and spiing, I want to hear the engine, the clutch doing its hard work and rain pelting the car. I could not care less about licensed music. I want immersion!

-60 frames per second. We all know this is possible on these new consoles while also improving the visuals significantly. The higher framerate improves the gameplay experience so much.

-no screen tearing. Everything can be awesome, but if you compromise in this area you can easily ruin the experience.

-online leaderboards during races. During any event it would be awesome to always have that next best time from your friends list noted on screen. See Geometry Wars 2 as an example. Competition is always fun.

-take it easy on the gymkhana. If you're going to include it please don't make it too prevalent.

-please utilize the rumble triggers on XB1. See Forza 5.

Lastly, can you just tell us now if this game isn't coming til 2015? I think it would be best to set people's expectations now.

Oh, and one last thing. Please include the Lancia Stratos in it's classic colors, and don't make it DLC. :)

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?

Hello Lee and welcome to GAF, hope you enjoy your stay in here with us. Anything you ever need, please let me know. As for the 5 things that are most important for me:

1- To me the most important thing is the focus on pure Rally Events. Bigger laps filled with different difficulty settings to please everyone. From the person who is terrible but love Dirt series and just want to have fun, to the most enthusiastic player with an amazing setup to play racing games. It's more than okay to reward those who play hard without taking the fun of those who are not good yet love the game. Rewards may come in handy in this part. As you might see, I was not a fan of Gymkana events on my Rally game or any of the non-rally events, sorry.

2- Weather: Snow, rain, heavy rain, dust, wind, racing at night, day, dawn, sunrise, sunset, etc. Weather conditions can affect your performance while racing but to me it's all about immersion. Weather effects add a lot of satisfaction for me while racing. With the new generation, having these effects and particles must be amazing to look at.

3- Sound: I love soundtrack in my games. In fact, I even have some physical CD's of some game soundtracks, however, racing games only need one sort of music to my years and that's the sound engine of my cars screaming. Attention to detail on how the car sounds, when push a gear or reduce one, when you are cornering too fast or when you past the woods, splash in water, lose grip because of the snow make the game more real and it's a simple delight to the ears.

4- Length & Variety: Give me plenty to do. Plenty events, races, time trials and championships. Give me a lot of wide locations with several different countries to explore the culture and to have a variety of terrain too like Forests, cities, desert, villages. Photo mode would be welcome too!

5- Content: Add content via DLC for customization, cars, tracks and try not to give more content by removing some of the main game. 30 hours should be amazing to focus on and I will be happy for that in my humble opinion. You could create more content such new events or new championships, more cars or just customization content that does not feel like something I should have had since Day one. When I buy and support a game day one I expect a decent amount of content and if I'm happy I will buy Day one DLC too. Another thing regarding content. I love to have lot's of cars, lot's and lot's of them! From all years too! 60's, 70's 80's 90's 00's 10's and so on so please consider a wide selection of vehicles.

I'll be sure to post or send my thoughts on the game if something else comes to my mind. I recently (during November-December) put around 40-ish hours in both Dirt 2 & 3 on PC and if this game releases on the PS4 I'll be there, considering I might end up liking it. Let me know if there's anything else you want to know or if I may help. :)

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?
1. Realistic special stages. Why would Finnish dirt roads be as wide as highways?
2. Wide variety of eras of rally cars. Saab 96, Mini Cooper, Lancia Fulvia, Lancia Stratos and other classics from the 60s and 70s, the Group-B monsters and the legends of the 90s like the Lancia Delta Integrale, Subaru Impreza WRC95 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI
3. Changing weather conditions and time of day for all stages.
4. The return of Pikes Peak with legendary cars like Suzuki Escudo and the Peugeot 405 T16 Pikes Peak.
5. Varied locations from around the world. Rally of Japan, Australia, Greece etc.

Most important would be dedication to rally as the main discipline, no Gymkhana or X-games please!

Grid autosport :p
Autosport is heavily based upon content from previous games in the series, I think Dirt 4 is going to be Codemasters' showpiece for the new consoles.

Posting on NeoGAF on mobile is painful, The_Monk said most of what I wanted to say.

I've asked this question quite a lot over the last year in various places but not been able to ask you. So here it goes...

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?
1. Focus on rallying and nothing else.

2. A career mode with different countries.

3. Unique tracks, as in I don't want to be playing the same tracks multiple times in one career like in the previous Dirt games.

Those are the most important things for me.

A modern take on Colin McRae Rally 1 and 2, basically.

current gen / PC only dirt with G27 support on console.

So thirst.

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?

1. Current gen / PC only. Let's not hold anything back for weaker technology
2. G27 support on PS4 (assume that it would happen on PC)
3. Much much more sim than arcade
4. Fully fleshed out cockpit view.
5. Occulus rift support on PC (morpheus on PS4 would be cool, but not necessay, PC occulus is a must)

On topic the only thing i want is

1. PS4 , X1 & PC only

2.60 FPS

3. Cockpit view

I love the base Dirt games so i do not have any complaints about in game content.

1. More focus on "real" rally with point-to-point races, less Gymkhana/X-Games stuff. Remember when you cater to everyone you end up pleasing nobody.
2. Dynamic daytime/weather for all tracks
3. Cockpit view
4. Less but bigger DLC
5. Focus on new gen consoles/PC only

Thanks for listening!

I loved Dirt 2, it was my favourite racing game at the time. Although I can understand why some weren't on board for the direction. Those long point to point events in the desert were awesome. You seemed to be going back to more real events and sim with Dirt 3, which is commendable and I like that balance, but I hope you don't completely remove the fun events for just rally stages based on some feedback. What I mean is don't be boring with event variety because a few vocal fans want the fun removed.

I'd also love to see a a quality soundtrack and menus that flow nicely again. An immersive experience rather than just a menu. Something that's part of my favourite games like Forza Horizon and Burnout 3, and Dirt. So I'm sure this will be back.

All of you requesting a rally only game are just setting yourselves up for dissapointment. There aren't enough pure rally fans to support such a game. They've got to make it more broad than that.

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?
1) I loved that in Sega Rally (Revo) you could "feel" the track and that it was deformed e.g. when you were driving through mud. It was really neat and such a feature could improve the Dirt series.
2) I love dynamic weather effects (sudden snowfall) and day/night change.
3) I love the cockpit view.
4) I like the gymkhana events but they shouldn't stop me from progressing through the events. But they could be helpful to unlock skins, stickers etc if they're in.
5) Less fancy menus and less announcements there. I just want to start the next (hopefully satisfying) race!

I'm looking forward to the next Dirt and I'm sure you guys will nail it. I liked Dirt 2 and had fun with Dirt 3.

1. No more poorly acted, pseudo-edgy, non-stop positive reinforcement from annoying "team members" that noone cares about.

2. 1900x1200 16:10 support on PC

3. DLC should not affect the completion rate of the career. As soon as you get Gold in every non-DLC race you should get Gold for that season.

4. Rally events, rally events, rally events.

5. Keep doing what you're doing with the car physics and driving controls. They're honestly best in class.

More Gymkhana events with more jumps, just go all out crazy arcade style. The feeling when you nailed them all :)

A proper sense of speed

More car customisation (user made livery)

Custom Map Editor

Get rid of those ridiculous online mp trophies.
(I platinumed DiRT but didn't bother with 2/3 although I loved them just as much)

Copy Rallisport Challenge 2?

But in all seriousness, go back to the original DiRT and ditch the XGames/Ken Block stuff, it's old and tired now.

If developing for XB1/PS4, I would like to see a huge emphasis on dynamic weather that effects the track, such as real time deformation of course surfaces.

More realistic handling model and physics. I liked DiRT but honestly didn't care for the handling in the subsequent installments.

Menu systems were always pretty good with the series, but just needs to be quicker and faster loading.

If you're going to add the Gymkhana stuff, keep it it's own separate mode that has nothing to do with the career.

Whilst I would prefer pure rally, honestly if it ended up like Dirt 1 event wise with better rally events I'd be happy with that too. Dirt 1 remains my favourite Dirt game content wise, it was only with Dirt 2 and 3 I didn't really like them so much but of course they had the better handling.

Oh and yes I can't believe I forgot to mention 60fps as other people have done here, probably as I mostly play on PC. But yes, 60fps even on consoles would be good.

1. Long rally tracks with good variety in course design.

2. 60 fps (will buy on pc so thats a given i guess)

3. As much as i liked the Gymkhana stuff, i'm not sure it's needed anymore. More Rally tracks instead!

4. Hud options, i hate playing with hud on screen.

5. ...if you make the game future proof for VR i will play it when i get a Rift or even get it on PS4 if it supports Morpheus (i guess that is all a little unrealistic)

I don't think there is much more to be asked about another Ralley game, as long as the controls are good and the courses are interesting, i don't need much more than that.

Hi justbiglee, welcome to NeoGAF!

1. Long, beautiful tracks (thinking back to track length in Dirt 1and Pike's Peak in particular)
2. Cockpit view
3. Great controls and handling (compromise between hardcore sim and arcade)
4. Weather (rain and snow)/time of day options
5. Professional tone and events that make sense (not gymkhana!)

Thanks!

Ugh I forgot about point 3... it was genuinely saddening seeing Codemasters stoop to that level. I agree with these other points too. I love the physics and handling model in DiRT 2/3. Hopefully DiRT 4 stays consistent in this regard.
It'd honestly be a minor annoyance if it didn't feel so sleazy. The offline mode even displays that stuff correctly.

Some good stuff so far guys glad to see that many of you feel the same way we do and echo what we hear on our own forums/steam/reddit.

Something a few of you mentioned that doesn't crop up too much is the sound. The guys in our audio dept will be happy about that.

Not to blow smoke up our own ass but even before I started working at Codies I always felt like the audio (especially in the 360/PS3 gen) was up there with the best and they are working hard with the guys at Shure and a university (I forget which) on some new recording tech that is going to benefit all our games.

As for the drifting unicorn, I'll mention it to the team ;)

1. Proper rally races and no X-games races. No more 'cool dude' telling you how awesome you are and that you should share that "awesome" finish on Youtube. A more serious and professional tone would go a long way.

2. Consequences for messing up. Get rid of the rewind button and bring back to repair system from Colin Mcrae 2005. I was disappointed to see that in Dirt 3 even on the highest difficulty you still had rewinds.

3. More varying environments. In Colin Mcrae 2005 every different country had unique characteristics which them all play very different. Finland had the constant hills and trees right next to the road, Australia had the slippy dirt and sand, Spain had tight, asphalt tracks on hillsides, England had all its mud, etc. Every country really asked something different from you which made them really memorable. Have proper weather effects also adds to this.

4. Cockpit view!

5. No more weird triangles in the menus, please. Keep it simple and functional.

If there's a Wii U version, then they might as well do PS3/X360 versions. Personally I don't really mind the old gen versions, Codemasters games look good enough on PC as it is. I don't need better visuals at this point and it would be relatively easy to get 60fps on PS4/Xbone.

-----

I really enjoyed Dirt 3. Specifically the racing & rally events. I just wish there were more rally stages and the few the game had weren't built the way they were ie. using same sections on every stage. The game felt like it lacked content and it soon became apparent why that was, the dreaded DLC. On that note, how goes the process with removing GFWL from Dirt 3 and releasing the full package (including DLC) on Steam?

Lee, ignore BruiserBear and stick with 30fps locked instead please! I'd love crazy vista's, wide open massive tracks, great visuals and effects, full soft body physics damage modelling and so on. 60fps is not necessary for your game, and 30fps is sufficient.

I'm nagging people about it probably 4-5 times a day to a point where I'm pretty sure somebody is going to go all Michael Douglas in Falling Down on me. I've been playing it on PC since Dirt 1 so it's hard to imagine at anything but 60fps. Makes it so much smoother.

If that's all you've ever been used to, I can see why you may feel that way, especially if you've never even played the console version. But I'm talking from a console gamer perspective, where such elitism isn't as common among the average target audience.
