Slash is shockingly done by mostly straight women as Fiction said earlier. Got a friend who is a slasher, married and has kids. You would think it would be non straight people writing this stuff but nope.
There are all sorts of fandoms out there. I attended Fedcon not long ago in Germany. A very well done con, you had people dressed up in Star Trek, BSG, Babylon 5, Aliens, Star Wars, Doctor Who and everything under the sun. You could buy tribbles, make up to look like anything and all sorts of goodies whatever the fandom. Plus you had panels with great guest.
The highlight of the show was the cast of Stargate, you had Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Micheal Shanks along with a few others. They had two panels with all three of them, mostly answering various questions and Anderson not remembering anything which lead to Shanks wondering if Anderson got alzheimers he might suddenly remember everything.
The con is very well done, very professional, got a ticket to get an autograph, you can be in and out in no time flat. I was kind of amazed at how all the horror stories I heard about cons didnt seem true.
So on the very last SG1 group panel which was the final panel for the con as well was packed, lots of questions and some times you had to wait for a bit. It happens depending on how many are asking and the answers given. Theres this one woman in a wheelchair who waited forever to ask her question and it was suppose to be the last one so they really wanted this poor dear person to ask!
She then began to inform them how there were fans of various age warping stories in fandoms. In this case Jack O Neil (Richard Dean Andersons character) was taking care of Micheal Shanks character who was a child. And her question centered on how good a parent O Neil would be. The crowd was pretty silent during all this, I mean, really silent. This was an issue of great importance to her, her tone and the way her voice rose at times said volumes. You think panels would have ran into everything, apparently not, they were quite lost on the whole thing and had to take time to work out what the woman was asking. Eventually they did and concluded good ol Jack would have been a great father to which the woman basically shouted thank you, thats what she was saying. I can only take by her relief and happiness the story(ies) she read didnt go quite as smooth and had her very depressed.
They did another question after. Probably because no one wanted to end the con on that foot note.
Cons, things happen.
Here's Christopher Judge learning about furries at a panel from Dragoncon one year.
