SPOILER ALERT: Halo 5 (Spoiler) Spoiler Thread of Spoilers Spoiler

I can't see how you can hate the campaign. Yes story is a personal opinion but the gameplay and level design is really good. Even if you don't like the story, it's still crazy fun to play

I agree. I've probably got 20 hours in over the last 32 and I can't stop. Even getting my ass kicked in legendary is fun

Why do people even hate Halsey?

Wasn't it like "we want you to make super soldiers" "ok, I have made super soldiers" "omg why did you do this!?? you are a monster!"

You can partially thank Karen Traviss for that. She's famous for doing this (butchering of Gears of War 3s story for example) and people keep hiring her for some reason.

Glad there's a bunch of us enjoying it. This forum will be filled with hatred soon.

Thanks! Been playing Halo since CE on the first xbox - I think they have done a great job.

Everything feels better. The controls the game play etc etc etc

You can tear holes in any story - personally I loved it.

Well that was short not like the other halos. The story was okay it reminded me of a marvel film. But its really for the multi player for me.

I wish the intels had subtitles. Maybe 343i can patch them in.

Tell me more about these exploration levels.
There are 3 "exploration" mission. If you have played ME1, you know this short moments before a big event like on Virmire? (Where you have the chance to talk to tons of people) Those are in the game. There are great and refreshing for a Halo game. I hope, people won't hate them more. I want to see the concept evolve.

Most people of this thread have not played the game yet and only watched the ending which got leaked. Well. They ruined themselves a great build up tho.

You could ask the same about Halo 3 trailers...

The first one shows Master Chief looking for Cortana and finding a Guardian. Well. In the game, he gets to Cortana through a Guardian. So the first trailer made a lot of sense. It is a teaser.

There may be something I'm missing, but those don't seem especially incongruous. Would you mind explaining? Like, what clashes with the final game?

idk after MGSV i cant stand cut content.

Staring to like the new direction. Looking forward to playing it in context.

For me the best bit there is

'Like Hasey did to me.' and Cortana's reaction.

Definitely think this is the most human emotions John is ever5 going to have experienced.

- Betrayed by Cortana, the person he trusts the most.
- Saved by Locke, realising that he can make mistakes and is not infallible
- Conused by the hwole Librarian genesong thing (like the rest of us)

Dark Cortana brings some real stakes to Halo 6 IMO

Yeah? Like what? She already died once and humanity (and before 4, all life in the galaxy) was always facing extinction.
The story could go in some really interesting directions, but the stakes aren't any higher than they were before. Probably lower, since no major character's life hangs in balance (in fact, the current main antagonist doesn't want any harm to come to our hero) and for the first time ever surrender becomes an option.

At what cost? I am expecting the Spartan IVs to start a resistance and singing "Do you hear the Spartans sing?"

I was more meaning stakes to John/117/Master Chief and what he does, where he goes from here.

Does he think he can save her? Redemption?

John might be feeling right now he wished Cortana was dead. Think it opens up lots of avenues of exploration.

My own 2c.

I don't know, likely high, possibly depending on many factors that haven't been stated yet, but I also don't think that it really matters in this context. It's the first time we're facing an enemy who doesn't want to destroy us completely.
The worst case scenario - becoming a slave or an AI buddy of a holographic lady with a big butt is still a better outcome than being wiped off the face of the galaxy, or becoming digitally recycled and shoved inside a Prom Knight, or having our biological material used to make one of the Gravemind's many sphincters.

I hope 343i really connects the whole saga with the few loose ends of Halo: CEA, Primordium and Silentium. At this moment I cannot imagine how.

I tried to make a bad Les Miserable joke.

just finished the game.

gameplay is absolutely fantastic. It's really what Halo is all about. Open Areas, vehicle parts, etc. Spartan Abilities fit in great, thruster pack and clamber is so good. They've done the music right this time. Great soundtrack and good integration in the game.

but the story. it just makes no sense to me why cortana is evil now. She wasnt evil when she entered the domain at the end of H4. there's a huge lack of explanation. from one moment to the next chief is against Cortana, but how!? especially the ending is not satisfying.

Oh and that whole Locke vs Chief stuff was a lie after all? They fight one time (why was the rest of Osiris just watching!?), but then it's fine and they are bros... great

They had so many great things in the books and terminals. new kind of flood, precursor, etc. if they hadnt killed the didact in the comics it would be cooler to fight him again than having evil cortana for Halo 6.
The story about chief and cortana should have endet with Halo 4.

whole story really felt like they changed everything in mid-dev. trailers and marketing makes no sense, like Bungies false Halo advertisement back then

Don't remind me about the Anniversary terminals... Will we ever find out who was on that ship? It happened so soon after the rings were fired the first time that it couldn't have been any species from known space, right?

And I definitely think they'll reintroduce Guilty Spark (Chakas) whenever they decide to continue the Flood's storyline.

Did we get any sort of definitive confirmation on Blue team only getting 3 missions? I know the mission descriptions all but pointed to it but I was hoping maybe some missions snuck in... or something.
Yep, Blue team is just 3/15 missions. but 3 of the osiris missions are no real missions, just a small area and you have to go to a person and it's done.

Anyone remembering that the actor behind Locke told us that he is the maincharacter of Halo 5 last year? and remebering frankies response.
"A" primary character,

Chief is the main character and hero.
1/5 of the game = main character

Everyone making judgements of the whole plot based off the ending cutscene.

Jesus Christ, this is something special.
There's no explanation why Cortana is evil.

Ending is truly garbage. I'm pretty much down for a 100% Osiris Halo game at this point because they borked the Master Chief/Cortana dynamic so fucking bad. And who doesn't love a cliffhanger ending in a Halo game? ugh

Just bring in Mendicant Bias already and have him fucking annihilate all this shittiness.

I imagine he was probably referring to the complaint that a lot of people had with Halo 4; too much reliance on the extended universe.

Well seeing as the explanation of the domain has been limited to like one line from Cortana in Halo 4 and there being no in game explanation of Blue Team according to the people that have played the game I'd say Frankie is full of it.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Story is one of them there treading water and status quo reset bores it seems. You watch the ending cutscene, you've got all you need. Cortana evil, new war, Halo lights up. (Oh and establish Locke as new buddy cop pardner because flappy-mandible Arbiter wasn't demographically exciting)

343 really took the Halo series into a boring cycle. The 3 ending and the Machine Planet were perfect lead ins to an all new take, but instead its just...'its like poetry, it RHYMES' shit. Cortana becomes new Gravemind, Guardians et al the Flood, yes well done. Flash up that John Dalberg-Acton or The Joker quote in typical white text Writer-chan. Really dot those i's.

Did halo 5 script change in development. These trailers don't make sense.

Microsoft marketing, you have to understand, is this slow moving and myopic thing. They will set upon one concept, one thing, one phrase, and drive it all the way to the finish line. With Xbox One they thought that 'All In One' shit was so clever, they named the console after it. Took years and an entire regime change to steer that into a new direction.

With this here Halo 5, the only thing that probably made sense to the 100's of orbity marketing types was the 2 main characters and FRICTION. Trying to tell them "its also mainly about this AI slavery thing too..." is too late. They're already out the door talking amongst themselves about THE DUALITY and so forth. Hell, their visors being Blue vs Orange probably gave some guy a chubby its so 'tightly packaged'.

Marketing land is a scary place, especially in the billion dollar bracket. You may as well be trying to communicate with aliens at times.

They should've just hired Joe Staten for story. Well at least it's not Rhianna Pratchett.
I think 343 takes a little too serious, while Bungie's games were always funny and witty and kind of a parody of all shooters that take themselves overly seriously. Plus tones of memorable one-liners that 343 doesn't even attempt to write.

I'm refraining from judging specifics on the story as I have not yet played the game, but you have I take it? From what everyone has said about the game, the clearest message I get is that the story is, 'the story of Blue Team'.

And if the Domain isn't detailed at least a bit in the game that would be a bit disappointing for those who have no knowledge of the EU, I guess.

The key is the domain explanation. It needs to be satisfactory.

So far, the rest of the events in game have not required extensive EU knowledge.

Every Halo
has required a ton of background material to establish its framework, so not having a full ingame explanation of Osiris and BT is understandable

. The question is whether or not the plot from a to b requires extra knowledge.

So I think I am halfway through the game and I am enjoying it but I have my complaints.

1) Too much time spent in forerunner areas, Halo 4 was the same and the aesthetics get boring after a while because they are the same in both games with little variety.

2) 343 is also no where near Bungie when it comes to creating vistas and outstanding locations, and the skybox actually look worse than any of the Bungie games in aesthetics (not even remotely close to Reach in this area)

3) So Cortana is the main villain ?...ok I guess.
I won't lie that I am disappointed here as I expected something more I donno. Something more about the Forerunners than this.

I kind of wish Locke was onot in the game and Buck was the guy who led Osiris.

Edit: ...yea... the Chief/Cortana interaction in Halo 4 had me rolling my eyes. Shit was cringey as fuck.

"Come on Chief, Take a girl for a ride"

Something that bugged me:

Buck asks Locke how they will capture Blue Team and he throws that device onto Buck and surprises him, when he meets Chief instead of throwing it by using the element of surprise he fights and then takes his time to show Chief that he is going to use that device and he doesn't even throw it.

Ah well...atleast we got a good cutscene out of it.

Throughout Halo 4 I really did enjoy 343 expanding on the relationship between them; even aspects of Cortana's rampancy were well handled. But then half way through the game they really start pushing the love story bullshit. Why does it always have to be love?!?!??! Why can't they just share a strong bond together? Why is Guilty Spark alive? Everything is so inconsistent and out of left field, my god they explain everything to death! They destroy the mystery of the Forerunners, destroying half the lore by creating the Precursors to fill the hole left by the Forerunners. And then downplay the flood threat by saying "oh, they're just a biological weapon". And don't even get me started on all the magical, convoluted bull about the Didiact and everybody dealing in absolutes and lacking no common sense. I mean "Hey, there are flood spores on this Forerunner colony! Should we warn them?" "No lets blow the fuck out of their colony starting and interstellar war!" Besides the Didact has no motivation! And the Covenent, really are being beat to death. And why does everything have to be a fucking love story! Fuck! I;m going back to dota brb my team is yelling at me.

ALSO in halo 5 they play up this whole rivalry between lock and Chief, that turns out the be nothing! And all of a sudden there is this forerunner AI thread!?!?/ And how did humanity expand so quickly after the Covenant/Flood war!??!?!?

Midi-chlorians, dude. Midi-chlorians.

It always strikes me as dumb whenever a storywriter uses "There is no time" for reasoning over when they can't do something. Are we to assume that communication takes so long for these Type 3 civilization that they can't even warn a planet but can take their time to travel there. Even Cortana does this in this game "I'll explain when I see you face to face cause I've got shit to do" despite the fact that she is an AI and can do both....meet her after 2 hours and many missions and the entire interaction ends in 2 minutes with fuck all development.

In other games/movies it's "There is no time" and then the characters proceed to walk or do little for the next 5 minutes when they could have talked quite easily.

Then there is the issue of characters not stating the obvious when they should and characters stating the obvious when there is no need.

I haven't completely spoiled the game for myself yet, but I've been catching up on the lore and I will say this: The three forerunner saga books are fucking terrible. Not only was the Forerunner status structure completely idiotic, but the whole 'imprinting' concept was extremely convoluted...

The whole time, I couldn't help but think that this idea of transposing memories was nothing more than a way to info-dump important information, because Greg Bear /343i couldn't figure out how to do it organically.

The humans find out about their history because Ancient Spirits rise up and start talking within them...
We learn the Didacts motivations because Bornsteller had him as part of his mutation. So again, voices in his head explaining everything. The librarian learns Forerunner history because she's bitten by an Ancient Forerunner and was suddenly able to understand them... It was all so fucking ridiculous. It went from being sci-fi to being magic...

That said, it's certainly possible to craft an enjoyable in-game narrative experience for folks who haven't read these attrocities. The first 3 Halo games were (mostly) successful at that (though those books were actually excellent) Here's hoping for the best..

Sucks you feel that way about the books, those 3 are my personal favorites of the Halo books. Generally speaking most people seem to love the first/third book while finding the second boring.

I absolutely loved the world building and sense of adventure that was explored throughout the books, as well as the hard sci-fi tones that it took the universe through.

I've heard that, people loved silentium, it was definately the best of the three, but i found them all to be boring. With the Nylund and Traviss books (why don't people like the Traviss books???) I couldn't stop reading, with these, i had to force my self.

I hated how all of the most important information just came from some spirits within. I hated how walking and talking was pretty much all that ever happened. I hated how what little action did take place, was glossed over. Maybe in a different universe these would be good books, but to me they weren't good Halo books.

I would have loved to read a book about Lord of Admirals vs the Didact. Actually SHOW that Fierce rivalry instead of info-dumping it...

Then, the second book should have been about the Forerunner Flood War. Let's show Didact, Master Builder, and Librarian politically duking it out instead of info-dumping it.

Then the last book should be about the Fall of the Forerunners and the creation of 343 GS. Again SHOW the disparity going on throughout the Galaxy instead of just mentioning it. Could have been handled in a much more interesting way IMO.

I couldn't make it past Glasslands from the Kilo-5 trilogy. I simply did not like the way Traviss portrayed the characters. I think everyone agrees that Nylunds books are all pretty incredible. Ghosts of Onyx is still my absolute favorite.

I stopped reading Halo books because of Traviss and Glasslands. Can't believe that was the story followup to Ghosts of Onyx.

Just awful stuff.

Yeah that's what I normally hear about Kilo-5, but I loved pretty much every character, except for the Parangosky, she was an asshole (which is a prerequisite for Head of ONI, surely). People didn't like how Halsey was treated, but once you realize she's is being unfairly scapegoated like many other people who work with/for ONI, I don't see what the big deal is...

I did like how Halsey got an iota of redemption when Osmin learned that if it weren't for the Spartan program, she probably would have died a poor kid in the slums... Now she's the most powerful human in the Galaxy. Thanks Halsey.

I think Traviss tackled the post covenant war political atmosphere expertly. Jul M'dama was cool (RIP) and he was right all along! Human's just can't be trusted.

The biggest red flag to me while reading Glasslands was the scene where Lucy punches Halsey in the face. I mean wtf? A spartan punches a 66 year old with no protection in the face and she survives with no lasting injuries? It felt like Traviss didn't really research much.

After I read Last Light and Hunters in the Dark I may go back and finish of the last 2 books in the trilogy, but man, Glasslands really rubbed me the wrong way.

I have not followed Halo lore since around the time Reach came out. I don't remember Halsey having one arm in h4. Did something happen in the EU or does she lose it in game during h5?
