Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

A lot of folks don't want to deal with complexity. Like needing to think about what the min reqs are and if my spec's are up to snuff (CPU/GPU naming conventions definitely dont' help).

So if you introduce PC like complexity on the console it breaks one of the core reasons the console market exists and is big.

Complexity of PC is Windows, drivers, and multiple configurations.

A PS4.5 doesnt bring any of this to the table. Just the same console we already have, just with more power.

Why is it so hard to understand.

You need to take more Logic courses at your college. This is not a slippery slope.

Care to elaborate without tossing casual insults at his direction? Unless your intelligence is such that whatever you say, simply is.

Of course, it's well within Sony's right to release this. I'm sure a lot of people will be lining up to toss their financial aid money towards this.

So 2 years in going on three and your going to say it's been underwhelming? When it took Sony almost 3 years to fire on all cylinders for PS3, and at least 2 for xbox360.

By 2009 we had the big games that showcased why you bought a PS3. We now are getting shit tons of games this year, and next year that are in line when PS3 had their big titles.

WTF do you mean I fall in the target? WTF does that even mean, what kind of a bullshit comment is that?

The fact Patrick brought up that some developers sighed when they heard about it, other's were confused. Does that sound like something all Developers are excited for? When they finally have their engines, and skd's running how they should be for really good production? The amount of detail seen so far in 2015, and upcoming 2016 games shows dev finally have a handle on their tools.

So I disagree with Sony/MS coming out with something like this unless this is something of a more new console for next generation.

Console cycles exist for a reason. It helps temper expectations, helps people have some kind of perceived end date for life cycle. I really don't see the pro's outweighing the con's for developers, or the chip manufacturer's in the long run. Having set hardware to me helps put pressure on developers, pushes them to be more creative in different ways, if SOny/MS just start upgrading the consoles every couple years, that push will turn into complacency. Because of the awful hardware decisions Sony made, and coding issues with PS3 we got Last of us, puppeteer, Beyond 2 souls, among others that pushed what PS3 could do.

PS4 seems to be finally hitting it's stride development wise, and seeing how engines are getting better optimized, we are getting better quality games.

So no I disagree, and I feel your statement about me is unneeded.

People forget the "PS3 has no games" meme with Uncharted 1 being one if its only notable releases early on and it hasn't even aged that well. That gen has been so long (almost 10 years now) that people are romanticizing what really wasn't. I suspect that has to do a lot with youth and some people being teenagers/kids during that time.

Gaming has never been as diverse and interesting as now precisely due to the indie explosion the last few years.

It's...coming.....at the end of the year??? THIS YEAR? 2016?! This freaking thing is gonna get announced at E3?!

You are way over thinking this. Of course it makes sense. Upgrade your hardware every 3 years makes sense.

To whom? It's more work for the publishers and studios, it's the same hardware sales with extra costs to the platform holders, and it's more stuff to think and buy for the consumers. The segment of folks it does make sense for isn't that bit. Folk like me with more money than sense who like toys. But for everyone else it doesn't make sense.

Thanks for this comment, couldn't have said it better myself. This is exactly why so many people hate this rumor. It feels like this generation is finally starting this year

With the use of AMD CPUs and GPUs, they can easily go to a yearly upgrade system. It sucks, but what are you going to do, buy a Nintendo console?

Oh wait, Nintendo already does this on the handheld side.

Who is going to buy a PS4 knowing that PS4.5 is just around the corner? Who is going to buy a PS4.5 knowing that the games are still going to be held back by the PS4? Who is going to buy PSVR if it is releasing at the same time as PS4.5?

What should I do this fall? Should I buy PSVR for the PS4 and 'enjoy' the shitty ports nobody will care to do anymore in 1 or 2 years? Should I buy PS4.5 to play higher res versions of PS4 games, thus not taking full advantage of the hardware I paid for? Should I get a 2nd job to buy both a PS4.5 and PSVR?

Buying PSVR this fall was an easy decision to make. Now I don't know what to do.

PS4 games are going to get bad ports while still holding back what can be done in PS4.5. This is worse for everyone, Everyone!

People who want a cheaper gaming system. People still buy older iPads because they don't want to pay for the newest.

The old platform will not be phased out on the spot. The old one will still be supported until the next revision most likely. But everything from now on will be backwards compatible from now on. If it bothers you so much skip the in between upgrades. It will be just like a traditional console gen.

Cross-gen all over again. Yeah we'll still have games on all consoles! However, in order to make it playable on the PS4 we'll have to scale it down and take out some features to get it running. But don't worry it's still the same game!

I would rather see them wait 2 more years and release a PS5. This sounds more like a way to keep 7-8 year console cycles a thing while simultaneously screwing early adopters since they'll just go out and buy the new thing anyway.

The only thing this will change for me is that I'll start skipping the first 4 years of a consoles life. What's the point in buying early when everything will just be improved by the time the "generation" really gets going?

Good. Hope this is the future for all the big console players

It is.

HSA! I think it's as simple as using accelerators

Announcment at E3, along with Microsoft's and Nintendo announcing the NX platform, which will also have the same thing in mind.

You don't have to worry about this. There aren't infinite combinations like a PC. Just assume it's another multiplatform game. There is another console the game is being optimized for.

Or do you worry about all multiplatform games too?

It is a step into the direction of the PC hardware development.

iOS is a better comparison. 2007 started with one iPhone, then it was an annual upgrade, and now we have... uh... 3 iPhone versions, 5 iPad versions, Apple Watch and Apple TV, all sold in the same product cycle. Despite the fact that there is only one platform owner.

Playstation will start its way into that kind of fragmentation "end of the year", as someone said.

I don't want that to happen. Fuck it.

A PS4.5 doesnt bring any of this to the table. Just the same console we already have, just with more power.

Why is it so hard to understand.

"I don't like it that people will get more Ps and/or fpss than me."

Thats the only thing people can complain about.

This has been coming for years, and guess what, its the first step to both companies going "service".

You don't know what developers tools are out there to make this happen. Obviously, it's happening and no devs have come out bitching about it. There's a ton of people in this thread and the Xbox thread who would love to upgrade.

Okay. Thanks for stopping by to enlighten me.

I'm just speaking loosely and candidly on a forum full of nerds, as if I'm shit-talking amongst friends. It's not like I would actually voice my concerns to an official representative this way.

And let me guess. You think I'm an entitled gamer because I don't like the idea of Sony splitting up the installbase and treating their fans like beta-testers, thanking them for being early adopters while asking them for another $500. I'm just another asshole asking for a handout, right?

People make their investments in consoles because of their stability and reliability. You trust it's going to be supported as a primary platform for many years, it's a significant part of the appeal in the first place. Otherwise everyone would just be PC gamers, which is far from the truth.
If this was a legitimate PS4.5 I'd be upset. If it's just an upgrade that allows a normal PS4 to play 4K video content and typical stuff like a bigger stock hard drive, then I think that's just fine.

How does more powerful PS4.5 treat PS4 buyers as beta testers?

I am assuming PS4=PS4.5 when it comes to games/platform... all the games will be the same, devs wont have to do "ports". Same architecture, just different resolution/fps/effects, depending on their priority.

They need to concentrate on releasing some good games first. I'd be all in for an upgrade if the first two/three years had been like they were on PS2.

Psst. Don't you know.
It's ok if Nintendo does it.

I kinda believe in this rumor, Sony has been pushing 4k pretty fucking hard on all its sides.
This can get nasty though I'll admit.

Typical Kotaku nonsense. I do not believe this PS 4k gaming nonsense one second.
What kind of magic APU is able to handle that? AMDs Zen/Polaris is promising but not that promising. They'd also need to increase memory size for 4k to at least 10 or 12gb.

What I believe on the other hand is that Sony is planning for a PS4 that is capable of playing UHD Blu Rays and will support 4k output for pictures, videos, streaming services and the OS itself and maybe an undemanding indie game here or there. But that's it.

It could be something really lame though. PS4 plus integration of the VR audio box and a some sort of high-end 1080p-to-4K scalar.

I just don't see how they can hit 4K on 14/16nm at a console price and power consumption point.

They can't. Not in 2016 anyways and likely not even in 2017. That's why this whole thing is super silly. If it's end of year 2016 then it's probably going to just be a hardware revision with HDMI 2.0+ and whatever minor things. If it's 2018+ then it's the really just the PS5.

"We have a system for people who want to enjoy their existing Playstation 4 libraries - it's called the Playstation 4.1."

This joke doesn't even make any sense. Sony isn't going to remotely disable the existing 40 million PS4's overnight and force you to spend $500 on a new system.

An avid PC gamer friend of mine called this back in 2012. Really curious what the "console convience" crowd will do.

... not upgrade? The PS4 you bought back in 2013 is still going to play games coming out in 2016 and its still going to play all of those games in 2017 and 2018. 5 years is completely reasonable for the length of a normal console generation, some systems like the original Xbox and Wii U didn't make it anywhere nearly as long as that.

I really don't understand these posts.

What exactly has Kotaku been wrong on with significant leaks lately? Their track record is pretty much the best in the industry with leaks in the last several years.

You really wanna go back to and repeat those dark Cross-Gen days? Did you forget about the enormous differences between Shadows of Mordor on PS4 and on PS3?

SOM was bulit for next gen and was downported for last gen, I don't think it's going to happen with PS4K, Sony won't abuse 40+ M users, they will build games for base PS4 and up-port them for PS4K, so it will be like playing a high end PC version of the same game.

I find it hard to believe thar they will build a game from the ground up for PS4K and than put a butched version on base PS4, if they will, I agree it will suck hard and I will never buy a console on launch again.

How is a upgraded console anywhere near like PC gaming hurdles. If this were true all Apple consumers would be experts at PC gaming. As long as there are not yearly upgrades I don't see the problem .

The highest end gaming PC's can't do 4k at 60fps in modern games. My $1400 PC can't do high end 4k.

What are they planning to do to make the PS4 handle 4k with only an incremental upgrade?

If this becomes actually a thing i would just switch to PC, i have no desire to stay in that kind of ecosystem.

Yes, i don't buy apple products neither i renew my cellphone or PC yearly.

I agree.

Indies, and the new digital options have really made gaming the better. Console makers now have more renewable incomes outside of just online services, but if a game is their own IP like Halo and tons of people buy it digitally and buy Ori, it's nothing but profit for them.

ANd that mobey goes back into getting developers, games on their system. WHich is why to my this gen has been the most diverse since my genesis and ps2 days.

Small, big, middle, indie teams making games that are really good that make it so I don;t even have to go look for bargains at stores, I just look on PSN, steam for flash sales.

But the fact I got to own, and love Gravity Rush that game I don;t know why, has had a huge impact on me. I think it's the look, and the music that makes me fall in love with it.
