Rumor: Zelda coming to both Wii U + NX, choose between male/female link, VA for NPCs

Who would you like to be the female character option in Zelda U?

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
Nintendo finally loosening up a little with female Link. I'd be down, though the cynic in me doesn't imagine any real changes beyond a cosmetic swap.

But hey, at least that's a step.

What does the very last part mean?

Obviously it doesn't refer to the fact that you can buy a game for whatever platform you want (you just have to pay each time).

They could just do what they did in Hyrule Warriors and give link a fairy that communicates everything necessary

I mean in HW they weren't even subtle about it, the fairy's name is literally Proxi

Right, and that was a funny and appropriate workaround for a Musou game. If they did something like that in a proper Zelda game with a story that actually tries to mean something it would be pathetic.

We've already run into this kind of trouble in Skyward Sword which involved Link being a full character involved in a romance - it was bizarre that he couldn't say anything, especially when Zelda was explaining things in that one highly charged scene.

Story matters hugely in the recent 3D Zelda games, and this is one problem they're going to have to find a way to overcome, or go back to the Link Between World classic Zelda style with minimal narrative. Either / or.

But the silent protag is the worst thing about persona...

I'm all for more inclusivity going forward with new IP's and new characters but I don't think well established iconic characters really need this treatment. I'm not hugely anti-Linkle either, it doesn't really matter to me but seems kind of an odd choice for this kind of thing.

Zelda's relevance among the current generation of gamers is so dramatically diminished compared to previous generations that they have much more to gain than lose with this move.

Zelda and Link (outside of Skyward Sword) feels like a princess and her loyal knight. Like Basch to Ashe in FFXII. I'm a sucker for that kind of story so I hope that's how it goes in Zelda U.

I've got news for you about the Wii U bud, it's dead. Why would they release a game on a dead console just to bomb?

Yup. Most other companies would have straight up pulled the plug on the system years ago, much less letting it live until the end of this year.

Linkle exclusive to the NX version with a pre-order, male Zelda named "Brad" included with collector's edition.

Remember this post, GAF.

Cool for two playthroughs, one male, one female.

Really wonder what the differences between the Wii U and NX will be. Graphical wise mainly. Hopefully the Wii U version isn't gimped.

lol link characterization.
Dude is a walking camera with a tunic

I was about to say. You could put a piece of fucking cardboard in his place and it'd still be the same. Some people on here act like Link is this grand character, which he really isn't.

Even worst to Link becoming an woman is creating an option and Link becoming a fucking blank character again. Fuck Nintendo if that's true. Don't expect me buying next Zelda or NX.

Yeah, the amount of games where Link and Zelda are a thing are few and far between. Even OoT doesn't really go down that road too much.
He's a kid in most of them. But there are romantic undertones that will be lost.
Unless they put in a lot of effort to make the cutscene different for both.
Not arguing against a female link, I'll definitely play as her, just saying there's changes when writing for a gender nutral character unless it's a child (which isn't the case here)

Do you think they're going to put in the work to do that though? We're only just now getting NPCs with actual VA work, I doubt they're going to put much work into have separate dialogue based on gender.

Do you have a problem with women flirting with women?

The person you quoted doesn't say they're against female link. Just not a fan of the toggle. They like Link to be a their own character in each game.

Why is toggle being brought up though? Wouldn't you just choose male or female Link at the beginning and start the game? lol

I really hope for girl Link to have a sexual relationship with Zelda, and by that I mean I can fondle her face and make babies that would time travel from the future to save Hyrule.

I think that's exactly what the tweet is implying. Buy both and support the game? something along those lines. I don't think there is anything cryptic about the sentence...

Interesting rumors, hope we hear something soon. The biggest thing people have against Link being able to be a female is that Link is an established character. People can argue all the want, but he has had the same (or VERY similar) design for 30 years. It's weird to see that change substantially. Rather than a choice between male and female link, I'd rather two separate stories with one following Link and another following Zelda. It's actually strange to see people not understanding where this view is coming from to me or immediately label it as bullshit.

Obviously, it wont change my view of the game as I'm sure it'll be a good game to me. It's just for me and many others, it's sort of the same as saying you can play as a female Mario in the next game. We will all still love the game. It's just weird seeing the same character we grew up with change so much, I guess.

I think you might be misunderstanding what they were saying, they didn't say Link would be a shit character if they're female.

He's saying that the storytelling would be genericized by catering to both genders. I disagree with that. The core facets of Link's character have nothing to do with gender and changing a few dialogue options/cutscenes depending on Link's gender (like, perhaps 2 or 3 characters can romance male Link, and 2 or 3 other characters can romance female Link) would be a non-issue.

A bit surprised but Aonuma does listen to fans. He did after WW. He did after TP and it was clear he did after SS. My guess is he took a hard look at what the west likes in its CRPGs.

Not sure how I feel. It'll depend on the quality of the art. But I would hope if there are choices it is not just sex...

One thing I'm not looking forward to is Link the waifu, which, well...it's going to suck going in to Zelda threads and having things like femlink is real Link because look at how awesome my waifu is...

Fuck, I'm not immune to finding the character cute and all but I really do not want that to be all over the Zelda fandom....

But, hopefully this is true for the people who wanted it for other reasons! I'm just not sure I myself like it.

Edit: Also, this VA better be f'n good or there best be an option to turn it off :p

Why would you want the worst looking option?
There are a few reasons imo:
  1. You don't want to buy another Nintendo home console at launch after what happened with Wii U
  2. You aren't going to buy the NX but have a Wii U already
  3. You don't have the money for an NX but you can still play it

Just a few reasons why someone would buy it on Wii U! :)

If true, I hope Nintendo really knows what they're doing with the voice acting. This is something that equally has the chance to do really well or completely blow up in their faces.

We'll either get another Kid Icarus Uprising or another Metroid Other M from this.

Yeah, a mirrored hero mode as the opposite gender of my first playthrough would be cool.

Xenoblade X didn't have a lot of story but the voice acting was good

Holy fucking shit, theres a chance for a gender option and tons of people defending Link "characterization" and the importance of romance on Zelda stories suddenly coming out, LMFAO

Well the NX and Wii U release is an almost certainty at this point. For the the other two rumors a female PC would be pretty cool wonder if it would change the gender of the Zelda as well, unless the female PC is the Zelda in the game. Voice acting would also be interesting and are her sources sure that Link being voiceless isn't just them being voiced by Kiefer Sutherland,
I kid I kid

not only that one..

the notion of not liking a not voiced character in a VAed game is something I don't understand, it's pretty much the same as reading text, but now you hear what you had to read before, it works the same for me.

If a silent character worked well in a text only game, it should also work well if it's Voiceacted

As someone still relatively new to GAF, I find it confusing and pretty annoying when posts like this are made with zero attempt at explaining who this person is or why people unfamiliar with them should take their word. Can we at least put in a one sentence blurb about who the person is? I'm am especially skeptical reading anything NX related after what happened a couple weeks ago...

But Link is a different person in different eras. Why couldn't one of those be a girl? It doesn't break the mythos or anything.
I said I wouldn't care if link was a girl. I said I don't want a gender toggle. I want a character.

I'm just a nerd who cares about Zelda mythos and lore. I know this is hard to explain via text, but I want link to be male or link to be female. I don't want link (the character I have attachment to as a part of the series) to be an avatar who can be either male or female. I hope that makes sense.

I understand that Link is an avatar. So why does Nintendo feel the need to have a female version then? I do not think having Link be à male protagonist for the past 20+ years blocked women from identifying themselves as the héro of time. I juste feel it is unecessary and more like Nintendo trying to do a marketing stunt that will not serve the game at all.

Edit: French autocorrect is the worst :/

I wonder if they even change the character model for a female link.

Zelda U's Link seems pretty androgynous.

They really don't need to change anything. It makes the whole process a lot easier. I wouldn't be surprised if they just realized that with people speculating that Link was female based on the trailer, so why not give an option?

Of all the poll options, my favourite is Zelda (about time!) and my least favourite is female link.

Why? Because if it's a separate character to Link that means he keeps his identity, rather than becoming a quasi-player created avatar, a la Fire Emblem. (And I hate the avatars in the recent Fire Emblems - I don't like that approach to narrative.)

Zelda does not lack for awesome female characters to adventure as. Like, you know... Zelda.

Neat. I like the idea of a female Link and Linkle was a lot of fun, even if they probably won't base her on that particular incarnation.
