Rumor: Zelda coming to both Wii U + NX, choose between male/female link, VA for NPCs

Who would you like to be the female character option in Zelda U?

Just make both Links look exactly the same and let people choose what gender it is. But if Link is female, will Zelda be a man? Hmm... Zeldor

I'm certain NOA can provide some great VAs for this if they wanted to, but given their uneven track record with VA quality I can see the cause for concern.

If the VA part is true, FUCKING FINALLY. Voice acting is long overdue for this series. And I don't mind at all that Link won't talk. I'm just glad there's voice acting.

Middle one is the way to go.

There are a few reasons imo:
  1. You don't want to buy another Nintendo home console after what happened with Wii U
  2. You aren't going to buy the NX but have a Wii U already
  3. You don't have the money for an NX but you can still play it

Just a few reasons why someone would buy it on Wii U! :)

Fixed and fair point.

So with VA for NPC, do they mean fully voiced or just some limited dialog like "Well hello there mister!" And the rest is just text? I do hope this is true and will be fun to watch at E3

Despite getting tossed around nobody has any evidence to back this claim up. Am I missing something? People say it was in an interview but no one ever turns it up.

I'm not really sure. It's something I've always heard but haven't seen the source either. I can totally see how it would have been true considering the amount of female characters and how you interact with them, which is also why it could just be speculation.

It doesn't need to pull any Stephanie Meyer or Paul Feig Ghostbusters shit, just simply have a female Link avatar for the player and everything else is as per usual.

Middle is perfect. Right is awful beyond belief for the Zelda series.

I really hope the NX version isn't real, because then I'll have to spend $120 on copies of the game instead of just $60.

Well yes they should probably go full RPG and have a dialogue tree for Link. Regardless though, there being a gender choice doesn't make a difference as to whether they would do that or not.

Regarding the character creator, I wouldn't mind that, although I don't think it should be fully customizable. I think I'd rather have some preset designs that we can change the skin color and eye color for, or something.

My concern is that they'll bland it even more up so everything works for both choices instead of making each unique. Reasoning being that is what everybody else does.

That's more in line of what I'm thinking of when it comes to the character creator. Bunch of small things like height, skin, hair, and possible VA choices.

they should get the voice direction team behind kid icarus uprising on board

they knocked it out of the park with that game

Voice acting I can take or leave (even though Zelda has featured VA in some capacity since OoT) but gimmie that female Link.

I honestly don't care about voice acting. It's just kind of whatever.

As far as gender choice goes, I dislike it. I dislike character customisation in general. I prefer set characters, of whatever gender.

Will buy on NX, assuming all of this is true.

Man. The backlash is gonna be fierce if/when people find out that there never was a female option. So much manufactured hype.

It's not like it's gonna be some Bioware thing. You'll probably just choose your male or female Link and that's that.

I don't see why. The two most popular big-name Western-style fantasy RPGs today are The Elder Scrolls and FromSoftware's games, both of which have silent protagonists.

But in one of those games you role-play as a character and choose their responses, and in the other (From's games) I actually have a very similar complaint - that your character is completely divorced from the story. I've got a lot of flak for saying that. But at least in From's games the 'story' is mostly background lore. You don't tend to have cinematic cutscenes where a person is talking directly to your character's face and then there's a reaction close up of your character where he lamely nods his head or moves his lips and we're supposed to 'imagine' what he has said.

I think those examples are different from Zelda, I really do.

Female only would be way more interesting than a simple gender toggle.

Agreed. I would have no problem at all with female-only link. It's the customisation I'm not a fan of.

Sorry for closing your thread Mihaell!!!!! My first thought was to either merge them or close the older one, and I assumed yours was older than it was!!!!!!

What if there's a Splatoon dungeon.

Pretty much. They've largely gotten their act together since then so I'm certain they can do the same in here.

In fact, they have to. It's frigging Zelda.

I still think it's silly that Link doesn't speak (I don't care much for silent protagonists in general, especially when every other character has dialogue). Starting with Wind Waker, Nintendo has gone out of their way to make Link have much more of a personality instead of being an "empty vessel", which makes the fact that he's silent a lot more jarring and off-putting, really.

That said, not having VA for NPCs was a much bigger problem for the Zelda series. Hopefully this rumor is true.

Linkle of course.

For me Linkle is really the same avatar as Link but only female. Thing is she has specificities so it's better than just a look only change.

It could be nice if there are some specific touches in the story or gameplay and not only have a sort of female / male skin for a charachter having the exat same attributes.
Even tiny adjustments since not everyone will play game twice with both genres... or maybe Nintendo will make this as a main thing in the story and to see the full game and understand everything in the story you'll have to play both

i hope the female character is still just link

none of that linkle nonsense

I'm not sure why people are worried about it being Linkle. She's mechanically very different from Link. They'd have to code all of the bosses to work with two completely different gameplay styles. Warriors games are coded like that from the start because of all the different styles they have to take into account, plus bosses are damage sponges in those games instead of strategic fights like in Zelda.

I think it's for equal female representation.
I'm sure some people would be fine with playing as zelda but having this option makes the statement that anyone can be the hero. Making it zelda just seems disingenuous to me.
Well, Zelda is already heroic in the games as there have been quite a few times where Link alone couldn't beat the "final boss". For the sake of avoiding spoilers, no titles.

Zelda holds much more value as a character, and a female one that is, and imo especially more than a gender-swapped copy of Link would have.

Not sure how I'd feel if we got Linkle instead of a simple, non-individually characterized female Link, but the option would still be appreciated.

Yeah, if it's anything like Kid Icarus, we're good to go.

Also, option for female lead? I'm all for it. Everyone wins. Zelda is a series where I think you can EASILY do this.

Agreed. Taking an established character (yes, Link is every bit as established a charcter as Mario) and swapping their gender has always been the laziest way to tick off the "diversity" checkbox in my opinion. Especially in a series positively drowning in great female characters already.

But whatever. Let them pick girl Link if it gives them warm fuzzies. I can still pick the real Link.

Always makes me happy to see newcomers to the series :)

I know it's easy to get confused since at a glance they might look the same, but if you look closer for a second you'll actually see that these are all different people that just happen to be dressed the same. It's been a series tradition for decades now, almost every game introduces a new dude with his own origins and motivation independent from the rest, even though they do all wear green! It's kinda silly to call any one of them the "real" Link since even Zelda II's Link was a different guy from the first one. It's an easy beginner mistake tho, no worries. :)

why does zelda's gender have to change at all? why cant a female link and a female zelda coexist?

That's actually my question, does the gender of Link make any difference to the story?
I would be interesting if they had completely different stories based on male/female link.

Since it probably won't be a Shiek game, I would prefer female Link over the other options. But as I said previously: Please, no choice, either always male or always female. And voice acting, yuck. Rogers usually tends not to be full of shit either, right :(?

The Link character has been established for 30 years, so shoehorning in a female version of that specific character... I don't know, i'd much rather have a new character instead and have the option to pick the gender, that would work better and wouldn't mess with the established lore

but you could argue that Link is never the same character and blablabla, which in that case you'd be right I guess.
