If this comes out this fall that means I'll have owned my ps4 for 3 years. I'd normally be getting a slim version at that point so buying an upgraded system makes sense. It's not a large jump in specs but enough to make a difference. Plus, I'm planning on getting a 4K tv next Jan with my tax return money so this all falls into place for me.

Very excited.

this is the first time a console generation is going to experience an incremental upgrade. when it's fully public we can't predict how the vast majority is going to react. but judging off of everything i've seen is pretty goddamn mixed.

PC Engine CD-ROM2 had an incremental upgrade ... twice!

Yea it's GAF. You're always going to have 2 extremes. That said a lot of the problems people had are addressed but people will find a new boogeyman simply because they don't like this concept. No one loses anything here

Yeah lots of fearmongering going on but that's to be expected here.

""Consoles run 2x or so better than equal PC hardware, but it isn’t just API in the way, focus a single spec also matters.""

It doesn't make much sense comparing a GPU into a closed environment(PS4 NEO), to a PC GPU for the reason above.

By the way, the NEO GPU will be around 4TF, In comparison, the GTX Titan has 4.5TF; just imagine what NEO exclusive Games will look like... with this power in a closed environment ! ;)

No, you did not just post that quote.

NO! This isn't happening again. I refuse to believe it!

LOL! So people just magically went from the x360 to the Ps4? Good to know. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Did I say that? It was more about marketing and the general media reception of Xbox One at first than that. The majority of people are unaware of technical details of consoles or the differencies between the same game across multiple platforms...

Even if Microsoft or Nintendo released something that was even more powerful than the NEO people have already invested so much into the PS4 ecosystem that changing console mid-generation would be very very expensive.... Even myself having mostly physical games I still have a lot of downloadable games that I don't want to just immediately leave behind or be forced to re-buy on another platform just because the performance is better.

Sure when starting fresh it's a little different, but not as a mid-gen upgrade.

I keep seeing the concern about base PS4 games being gimped and everyone targeting PS4K. Maybe I missed it earlier in the thread, but if I was a dev, doesnt it make the most cost effective sense to me to target the HUGE PS4 install base, do the absolute minimum to beef up a game to NEO mode and have a game that works on both systems?

Dont get me wrong, I know they want all the new power, but not at the cost of millions of user base systems. If I was a PS4K user, I'd be PISSED if that happened. Even with decent extra power, if devs dont push it, the power would go to waste.

if your talking about the average ps4 consumer, he might not like the idea, but i doubt he will lose sleep over it or care after about 5 minutes of hearing the news, since i talked to your average cod, and halo gamers, some were on board, some said it sucks, and didn't care after a few minutes, only extreme hardcore gamers will let something so silly bother them.

I'd say that was true 5 to 10 years ago but today, information is everywhere. Kids, teens and adults are on reddit, forums, listen to podcasts, youtube, etc., and are much more informed about their technology. This isn't going to be some small sliver of users that know about this and the differences.

Why would you be leaving it behind. Theoretically if NX is more powerful than PS4K, can't you get an NX and still play all Playstation games on your PS4? There is no reason you cant have your old eco system AND the most powerful system (if power happens to be the draw for you).

Look at this guy. Being all reasonable and rational and considered. For shame!

You really think 51% of PS4 owners are regulars on videogame forums?

Oh hey. Look who's jumping into convos without bothering to see what's being discussed again.

Well.... PSVR is launching at the price of a console... if someone only has so many hardware dollars to go around what does the NX bring to the table?

Nintendo first party? Sure but how many of them are going to come at launch?

Between the PSVR/NEO and if Microsoft do anything, Nintendo should be pretty worried.

It can actually work for Nintendo because it seems Sony and Microsoft are going to open the floodgates and start telling people it's time to upgrade. And when it's time to upgrade you reevaluate all your options which the NX is right there at the right time. If you are on the middle of a generation and launching a new console on a different timeframe there is a huge risk, consumers just say "I wait 2 years until to the end of the console cycle I'm currently on". Now everyone starts almost from zero.

About the ecosystem, people changed from Xbox Live to PSN when this cycle started. No reason not to change it again now.

I'm still skeptical about how much "more informed" they really are, definitely not to the level of people who visit this forum or GiantBomb or Digital Foundry or what have you.

If it is getting the new Polaris next-gen architecture, then it means it is a radical change. Also the double CU can allow more operations, effects and graphical features. Games will look luch better then, like from medium to very high. I hope the final specs will surprise us. The problem may be the incompatibility with some older games or that regular PS4 will get a very gimped and choppy version due to some architecture incompatibility issues especially if games are natively developed on PS4 Neo and then ported to the regular PS4.

Think I might sell off my PS4 after Uncharted 4. Not gonna sell any of my games, but I want to get the most I can for my PS4 before the PS4K gets announced and the PS4 becomes worthless.

I'm still hoping that they change the controller. Hate the DS4.

In all this news....does anybody realize both the PS4 and XBO only have HDMI connections...

That was a slap in the face for all of those with standard def TV's!!!

And why is Sony and MS not pushing for games created with standard def in mind???

(I had a cousin just get an XBO for Christmas and his mother had to get him an HDTV a month later. Yea I know about HDMI/AV converters but still...)

..............................................................................................................

I will give Nintendo credit for having A/V, Component connections an option for Wii U.

Which makes me wonder will Nintendo leave it like that for NX?

So many wrong things here...
First, this quote is bullshit. You never saw PS4 outperforming by twice an HD7850. Or even outperforming an HD7870.
Second, Nvidia flops aren't the same as AMD flops. You want to know what your games will look like ? Take a look at a R9 280x GPU.

First up, we should tackle the issue of how reliable the leak is and by extension, whether the proposed spec is real or not. Up until very recently, exposure to 'PlayStation 4K' throughout the development community was limited. We have been sitting on a number of details awaiting a second source before going to press, but events have overtaken us somewhat - Sony is now openly sharing this specification with developers and while Giant Bomb beat us to the punch, we have access to the same documentation. There is no doubt - this is real. This is the new, more powerful PlayStation 4.

Interesting..

I've seen a lot of people mention 4K TVs... Are you all referring to being able to play UHD Blu-ray discs on the PS4K?

Because games on the PS4K will be getting upscaled to 4K, just as the PS4 games will. The PS4K doesn't really hold any 4K benefit outside of the UHD Blu-rays. The gaming benefits (higher frame rates, more effects, etc.) would be just as visible on a 1080p display.

even though i kinda agree with you, sony exclusives really take a shit on any game running on a hd7850, maybe he's talking about if you code it to the metal.

It doesn't appear that they intend to do that nor they really have a reason to change it, I guess it'll be exactly the same.

I will give Nintendo credit for having A/V, Component connections an option for Wii U.

Which makes me wonder will Nintendo leave it like that for NX?

Heh, that means the Wii A/V cable would be usable for a third console, like the SNES/N64/GCN(I wonder, why did they change it at all for Wii?).

True. I personally just see VR as outside the mainstream. Just my own opinion but I dont see it being a huge seller after the initial batch and could easily see more people wanting a new Xbox or NX (if it is more powerful) more than PSVR.

Hell, I could see MS doubling their market share if they release a new more powerful console. Even if they dont sell to a single new customer, they could get to 40million just on disgruntled Xbox fans who would want to lord a possible power lead over PS fans ;)

People buying new consoles with SD TVs after 2013 are slapping themselves in the face.

I still regularly explain to people my age what a podcast is. Some people are more informed, probably more than five years ago, but that isn't the widest net yet.

Are we supposed to just take your word for it, ro do you have any actual measurable evidence?

its obviously not for everyone, those that are interested in better hardware will buy it, those that don't won't like the idea will just play there vanilla ps4, and won't care or be bothered by ps4k, cause there is more important stuff in life then being bothered by a ps4 that will run games better.

This is like the worst case scenario, people thought that performance was shit for some PS4 games? Wait till they start shipping them with a "Neo" mode.

Am I unreasonable to be bummed out about certain users potentially having 60fps vs my 30fps in online MP? I think that's pretty annoying.

My biggest concern with this was that the existing PS4 userbase would be left out in the cold because of the PS4K (or NEO or whatever) having exclusive games. If they keep the exclusive features minor and the graphics/fps are the only main difference between a game running on a PS4 vs. a PS4K.5Neo, then it's no problem for anyone. Except for those few games that are having a bit of a rough time on the PS4 as it is.

I don't know if anyone claiming "early adopter" status at over 2 years into a console's life will get a lot of sympathy though. It's not really "early" at all anymore.

Without examples of the visual difference the reaction is not worth much.

I can tell you at least in my personal case, consoles are damn expansive already, and i'm not happy my 400€ PS4 is going to be obsolete 2 years after i bought it.

The idea of, let's say, a subdivided generation, or a more progressive transition is not bad in itself. BUT only if it means longer console life, not shorter.

What i mean:
Past : 5 (average, historically) years console life.

Now :
_8 years with upgrade at half >> good cause it lasts longer in the end. It's good for users.
_5-6 years with upgrade at half >> bad. Will be perceived as unfair by users.

its obviously not for everyone, those that are interested in better hardware will buy it, those that don't won't like the idea will just play there vanilla ps4, and won't care or be bothered by ps4k, cause there is more important stuff in life then being bothered by a ps4 that will run games better.
those that don't/won't like it may also give up console gaming.

Ideally, Sony will have standards in place to make sure this doesn't happen. I know that's sort of laughable, but it's the best way to handle it.

As a comparison, the 3DS runs Hyrule Warriors Legends terribly, whereas the New 3DS runs it fine. (so everyone says anyway. Full disclosure: I haven't played the game on either system. But it's pretty much consensus).

The master race shitting on the plebs. I see nothing wrong with this.
I already do this on PC (spend too much to get top performance).

Console was supposed to be my safe haven.

I can't really afford to go balls to the wall on console AND pc.

I might just go pc only :/

(And yes, I have a problem)

Yeah, but it seems like those games will run 30fps on the existing PS4 regardless. The main hope is that devs don't decide to develop specifically for the new, more powerful model, leaving the other PS4 as an afterthought.
