MS: "gamers have spent more than 100M total hours playing Backward Compatible games"

What downplay?

BC was never a big deal.

So if PS5 is not bc with PS4 and PS4neo, nobody will care about it? Doubtful.

I'm sure they'll care, just not enough to make any effect PS5 sales.

Now, if MS offered BC on the next gen Xbox (which they will) it will make negative PR for PS5, and that will definitely affect PS5 sales (In a negative way).

Only MS will released a pointless pr statement. Just like their NPD statements this gen.
For a feature that supposedly is not used I'd say it's pertinent.

OT - used it a fair bit myself and still need to play some more games like Red Dead Redemption, Alan Wake and Gears. Awesome feature.

Of course people downplay BC when it's on a MS console. Some people are unbelievable.

Who has down played it? Putting something in context or trying to figure out what it means is not downplaying.

Wii U has sold over 10 million units. How do we know if that's good or bad without comparing to the other consoles and time scale and if that number is world wide or in one country.

But world wide brand awareness, better games and more variety of games will make up for that.

Halo 3 is probably one of the biggest online multiplayer launches ever on console. I'm not sure that's a fair comparison.

Not the most fair, but big game or not, it's one game, in one week, VS how many games that are BC now? Over one year (give or take).

Just saying, these numbers could be great, but the don't necessarily mean that BC is a huge success. It's getting the numbers over a year that any big multiplayer game would obtain easily. Is that bad? No. Is it great though? Probably not.

It's a nice feature that comes at no extra cost to the consumer and allows them to play content they purchased on the previous console on the new one for free.

MS announces a milestone for use of the free feature.

Some on GAF scream for "context". Why? An innocuous statement on a free feature gets this much scrutiny and scorn? Seriously?

All I know is that xb1 BC has let me jump back into Braid, SSX, Geometry Wars, and soon Red Dead. All I need is Deadly Premonition and it'll be perfect. Props to Microsoft for pushing it.

Genuinely struggling to understand why so many want to find a negative or try to dismiss backwards compatibility as a compelling feature of the Xbox One.

bc is great for preservation of console games. i'm glad nintendo and microsoft support some form of physical BC

First post nails it! I don't currently have an XB1, but backwards compatibility is a great added incentive down the line. I need to play Lost Odyssey sometime before I'm on my death bed. It'd be nice to pack my PS3 away, but there is still a nice enough library of games that I can't quite bring myself to. (Put Demon's Souls on PS4 already, Sony.) I hope Microsoft continues their BC trend, and hopefully Sony will be able to do so with the PS5. It'll be interesting to see where the NX ends up in that regard, though I guess that is quite unlikely from what is rumoured of the console.

With the history of MSPR recently? Can you blame anyone try to put some context on such PR?

I have never used B/C but this friday i will be using it alot because RDR is a game i really want to revisit. I am also sure i will use it more in the future when more games i want to play become B/C,

I got rid of my 360 due to money, space etc and B/C is perfect for someone in my position. Keep up the good work MS

Not used according to GAF maybe. I've stated for years that in the real world consumers (especially parents) that casually buy consoles, cared about it.

Anyways it's definitely a Microsoft spin. Like they stumbled onto something, that's proving popular while Nintendo offered bc the entire generation.

PSNow is something I'll never ever use, whereas I'd have a PS4 by now if it played PS3 games

BC is awesome.

I swore I wouldn't buy a console without BC, then I broke under all the PS4 hype.

Now with the way BC is implemented and GWG and EA Access and TV pass through the XB1 is the most consumer friendly console in my house and gets 98% of my play time, 100% of my family watch stuff time, and 150% (because I swear she only learned to speak so she could instruct the box to go to peppa pig) of my daughters time.

Great update.

But world wide brand awareness, better games and more variety of games will make up for that.

What else does yor crystal ball say about the next Xbox versus the PS5?

Brand awareness had the 360 on top the majority of last gen. And let's face it, the two platforms share 98% of the same library and the exclusives "better games" is subjective. I'll take the Xbox brand exclusives over the don't ones, easily. Especially because I can cross buy them for my Xbox and PC. I see that being a practice they keep next generation.

I'll be honest, ive not used it once. But that's because my 360 is still hooked up.But I do think BC is good to have on present and future consoles

I would say it's mandatory, especially as digital sales will only go higher. BC will make sure your digitally bought games will have a "future" so that when the old console is getting "switched off", your games will still work and you will still be able to download them.

Ridiculous how many people come into this thread solely to try and cut down on the xbox one, even though backwards compatibility is in all ways a positive for the industry.
The lack of bc on ps4 has some folks quite irritable so obviously it sucks and Microsoft sucks and this is pointless pr hack.

I played RDR for a week's time back in February when it was accidentally made available. I've played Mass Effect and Super Meat Boy and several others. It's a great thing, bringing content forward. There's literally nothing bad to say about it.

Who wants to play Skyrim BC when there's a 1080p remaster with enhanced graphics and mods coming?

Me...unless the new version has some sort of co-op coming (which i don't believe is the case but correct me if im wrong) i won't be buying it pretty much ever. Don't see the point in buying a roughly 5 year old game for full price. Id actually prefer the option of just returning to my original save state on the 360....odds are the game would perform better BC as well (reduced load times and such, i believe this was the case for fallout 3, and having played it bc i can say imo it felt extremely smooth). Instead with the alternative, these 'enhancements' to the game will like result in it running just a poorly (if not worse) then it did on the original last gen consoles, ie, load times may be longer, inconsistent frame rates. All for superficial 'improvements' imo. Like i said, if they added in something game changing like co op (let my brother play with me even if he can't influence anything in my world other then killing enemies and accepting loot i put on him) then they'd have my attention.

Where are people being negative on the feature? Where are these "BC is shit" posts? Where are these "I'm selling my XBone because it has BC" posts?

People are debating the worth of the number and what it can be compared to. I'm not seeing anything beyond that.

But that must mean it sucks and MS sucks right?

That was a whole lot of words that were mostly conjecture.

You think the remaster will perform worse than the original games? Would you care to bet?

That's a lot of hours. I really hope that Microsoft is planning to enable 360 BC on PC as well, it would be a great feature that tons of people would use. An official 360 emulator with the ability for higher resolutions would be fantastic.

Well, I dont think I said anyone was syaing "BC is shit" I am merley pointing out that a lot of people are questioning the 100m number and trying look at ways to put a negative spin on it. It just seems a bit ... weird.

I probably have a persecution complex that is clouding my judgement though ;)

If there's over 20 million x1 owners 100 million BC hours isn't impressive at all. In fact it really proves people barely use it. That would mean on average people have used it 5 hours.

If your world is called USA and the only games that exist in said world are AAA western developed games.

Backwards compatibility isn't my main reason for having an Xbox One but it sure is a great feature to have. For those of you that don't have an Xbox One games will just pop up in your game collection to download as more games becoming compatible. It's kind of fun to revisit games or play ones you missed. Your games collection significantly increases without having to pay any extra money. You also get the added benefit of playing the 360 games with all the Xbox One features like recording, screenshots, crossplay, etc. It's a nice program.

Microsoft needs to get more flak for releasing unimpressive numbers without context about features no one cares for.

He's on your side. He was being sarcastic. Xbox is life.

This thread is insanely sad.

100 hours (while not amazing) is a fair bit. I don't think most gaffers understand how little the average consumer actually play games.

Tell me what that means, Microsoft. Even as Microsoft shifts from hard sales numbers to "truth that Sony is kicking our asses"-obscuring "engagement" numbers, 100M total hours means nothing if Microsoft isn't willing to compare and contrast it to literally anything else within Microsoft's library of stats.

"It's a large number, so it must be good," I guess.

They should compare it to Sony's numbers in backwards comp!

I'm not surprised - my pile of shame from last gen is offensive. Never quite finished Mass Effect 3 or BioShock Infinite. Has anyone had much luck getting their save files across to the Xbox One?

Funny considering my topic on why always online single player games are awful and should not be supported was mostly met with "Eh, who cares I don't replay old games anyways"

Shows how out of touch neogaf is with gaming community in general

Yep transferred all saves to the cloud storage, works perfectly.
