I laugh at the people that are disappointed at this. before all of this, I never thought Sony could pull off a slim and now this thing is like 2/3rds of the height and a bit thinner

For 4K streaming they just need a current HDMI 2.1 port to support HDCP 2.2. It really doesn't add anything to the cost as the hardware is enough to stream (although they may want to do something about the NIC for network speed).

The sides should be taking air in, and if there's more exhaust holes on the back it doesn't make much sense to portion that little area off.

I'm guessing because it will be able to stand vertically. Would look better than some round rubber feet sticking out of it.
Of course they did, it's a well known strategy to make the cheaper product look worse and get people to buy the more expensive option. But from a consumer point of view it's never great to be "left behind".
And i don't get your second point. In fact i haver never understood that reasoning. It's not like buying a 4K TV means you have unlimited money to throw around. A lot of people have to prioritize what they buy. It's also about the future. I bought the PS3 back in the days even though i had like 2 blu ray movies. But i knew that i would get more in the future. It was pretty much the reason why i used it instead of my Xbox 360. I even ended up moving it to a summerhouse/vacation/holiday home(not sure what it's called in english).
It just smells a bit of Sony trying to get a few more bucks from the PS4 slim by not including a UHD player. But lets see how they price it.
To me it just reminds me of the Xbox 360 vs the PS3 and how i ended up liking the PS3 more as a media player because of the blu ray drive. The PS4 Slim is pretty much obsolete for people with a 4K tv as a multimedia player.

I don't see Sony releasing two PS4 hardware this year. The original rumors for Neo was always Q1 2017.

The S is still the cheapest. Doesn't yet support bitstream through the player (so no Dolby Atmos yet), but MS has said that's just a software update and it's probably coming.
There are two standalone players right now, a Samsung and a Panny, but both are more than the S.

I think it will be hilarious if it actually happened. It would serve Sony right for not announcing these at E3. I don't see it happening Sony just on a roll and nothing bad has happened to them all generation.

One of the Amazons (I think France) listed a new PS4 for the second week of October before pulling it. People though it was Neo, it's probably this.
Nothing bad has happened? Some of their big exclusive games have been lackluster critically or commercially or both, said games encountered many delays, being one upped on the UBD front by Microsoft, the complete failure of Vita and PS TV, and so forth.
Sure there's more good than bad, but they certainly had a lot of bad.
Yeah, waiting to announce a system until you have a good amount of content to actually show? Ridiculous.

Hope it is October for neo. My ps4 keeps making this beeping noise. I don't want to get the slim with neo so close though.
Yeah, there's no way they announce the NEO and then wait too long to release it Announce the NEO, give people a few weeks to save up money, trade towards it, pre-order it, etc.
And the people who want to jump in but don't have a PS4 or the funds for the NEO quite yet have a cheaper option with the PS4 Slim. Looks like it's being made cheaper and with less parts, just like I thought it would, which is perfect for selling it in the long run.

Yeah, I'm expecting it on or before October 13th, so it's on the shelves when people go in to buy a PSVR. Low PSVR stock + money set aside/saved up + another brand new shiny piece of Playstation hardware that is in stock = perfect recipe for impulse buying.

I used a ruler tool to measure the relative thickness (along the full thickness of the left diagonal edges) and the super slim comes to approximately 147 units compared to 217 on the slim. So it's about 67.7% the thickness.From twitter
