.... i dunno man. It was a lot less "forced" then either Ezio or Connor's eventual change to mature assassin. Altair started out as a master assassin... was brought low by his arrogance and then slowly worked his confidence back up over the course of the entire game via the sub missions and talking to other assassins. He clearly starts cocky as fuck - gets regulated on - starts of bitter and in a rush to redeem himself and then slowly learns what it means to be a Master Assassin... where towards the end of the game he is conscience of not only his enemies goals and desires but also the help and support he has been receiving and the gravity of his situation.

Compared to - Herp derp revenge in both the other games.

Precisely. Altair didn't instantly change himself, it was a slow progression. And, to top it all of, he never lost his arrogance. He only learned to keep it in check. It still came out on occasion and continuously caused problems for him. He was never able to fully rid himself of his weakness.

I honestly only think people call him bland because he isn't constantly making quips, something I find annoying more often than not.

Why can't this be a character trait? I admire Ubi for giving us a flawed character. People complain he was a mouthpiece yet complain about something like this? He could have been worse, a super Native hell-bent on destroying white people in a super-cliche fashion. get over it, folks. We have a flawed hero with an amazing turn in the Homestead missions. Was great seeing how he reacted to the romance questions.

I don't understand why people say he was a mouthpeice. He wasn't. He used the Patriots and they used him because their goals were aligned. He was naieve in the beginning belieivng he could achieve peace for his people, that is made clear. But even after he realizes this he continues to push the Patriot agenda. The British used the Templars and vice versa because it was the same with them. Kenway even has a big speech about its not about their belief in the cause but that the British would allow them to spread their ways to the new world.

It felt way too forced. I am suppose to believe that suddenly doing more assassinations that he has done a billion times before is suppose to make him humble and learn something about being an assassin?

So he didn't progress at all. He is bland because that is what he is. He hardly shows any emotion.

Would rather have no penis than have to show his to a medical professional
The only thing missing was a Jack Sparrow in there =)

The pirate theme could be fun since they did good stuff on the seas before, but man, what a waste of a numbered entry in the franchise. The lead character looks silly in a hoodie (they made the hooded look cohesively work with AC3 and Liberation with the rest of the series somehow, why does this look so out of place and look nothing like a pirate's outfit.) The setting smacks of bandwagon-hopping in a way that AC always brilliantly defied (zombies next?) And one year's development time with DLC also piled onto that same timeline doesn't give much opportunity to develop new technology (I know, Ubisoft has 99 studios making Assassins Creed games, but ACIII was a major one, I doubt they had even better technology also in development at the same time they were overhauling Anvil... unless their next-gen technology really is ready to take it to the next level and we'll just see whatever's left that's possible to port on the old platforms.) Would have been funny if in the swimming scene he swam past that shark Ubisoft jumped...

I also can't believe that Mcfarlain poster is real, I thought for sure it was something a fan whipped up when the Black Flag rumor started a few weeks ago. My god, that poster looks douchy!

So he didn't progress at all. He is bland because that is what he is. He hardly shows any emotion.

Being brought low by Al Mualim is simply the starting point. He is also forced to do all of the research for his new targets, something he hasn't really had to rely on in the past. He always held himself superior to his brothers, but was forced to realize that they really weren't all that different to himself. He had to learn to think of them as other human beings instead of simply tools to be used.

Progression does not equal getting rid of your weaknesses. You must think Superman is a wonderful character if that is the case.

Altair has a very similar personality to myself (with the same emotional cycle), so it's hard for me not to see when he shows his emotions. They're not as blatant as the night and day emotional cycle that other characters go through (and other people in real life), but I've never been able to think of them as being anything other than act that is being put on because of how different the range of emotion is to the one I show and know that I go through.

Alright, the Assassin's garb is officially ridiculous now. It honestly just looks like Altair time traveled to this era and slapped some guns on there to not be 100% out of place.

the best part of ac3 was sailing and the battles.. i don't see any other games that will let you be a pirate and open world sailing. picking this one up.

It would be awesome to have open world sailing. I doubt that's what we will actually get. I think the sailing with be completely separate just like it was in AC3. Open world cities, go to dock, loading screen, next scene opens you are on your ship somewhere traveling towards a specific goal. Mission ends, loading screen, you are back at port. I will be pleasantly surprised if it isn't like that at all.

I'm disappointed they wont be able to salvage Connor as a character. I really liked his flavor and stylings.

I would like that to happen too. But they would really need a new voice actor. I thought he was awful.

This would be incredibly disappointing, but I can see it happening as well.

Great, but it poorly executed in the game. The game doesn't show how gaining information is difficult. It's so easy he should be more arrogant then before. We never see why he should show respect for his other brother because he does everything with ease. He doesn't struggle anymore then he did before. Earlier you said he was still arrogant but also able to see he is no different from his brothers? Being arrogant is feeling like you are superior to your brothers. You can't still be arrogant and be humble at the same time.

Those girls. Look like Connors sisters.DO NOT WANT...

There were 2 things that make me optimistic from the crap that was 3, the brief shot of some of the ports showed some decent towers and the underwater dive gives me hope there is some kind of tomb raider sequences underwater tombs to explore.

Still not sold day 1 but has peaked my interest.

Overconfidence in your self is also arrogance, something that he still struggles with. He understands now that he is really not much better than his brothers, but he also overestimates what he alone can accomplish from time to time. Knowledge and action doesn't always equate.

This is not really shown, I never got that once from the game.

It's a shame his grandson is Connor. He must be rolling in his grave wondering how such a dumb, boring, no-personality sourface could ever become his grandson.

AT LEAST they should've went with black

I'd rather have a Pirate hat instead of the Assassin Hood® too

Not really getting how you hold Altair to this kind of standard and seem to be implying that the other protags in the series are superior in any fashion. Altair had nuance to his dialogue that changed through out the game. He had very specific conversations that you were unable to miss or bypass where they go into his reticence to use other assassins in a job after getting a fellow brother maimed... all the while they are explaining to him that his past mistakes have fashioned his current station and rank - but he can't simply shut everything/one out and do the whole thing alone. That the assassin order was never meant to work that way. That the fight transends nations and races and peoples and is actually a war of ideals.
He DIRECTLY influences these ideals - in the first game even - to a great degree. He sees what absolute power does and gets straight PISSED at his former master.
He speaks in hushed calming tones to victimes later in the game. Understanding that they are all human even if they are a link in a chain that must be broken.

Again - ALL of this is more subtle, more depth and more intriguing (to me) than MOST of Ezio's/Connor's progression. Ezio who starts a big dick swinging normal dude and then becomes an assassin easy peasy... and proceeds to be that guy until he is fucking 67. And Connor.. who is so bland and vanilla that he literally just takes up the cause of whoever the fuck is standing closest to him with the largest personality at the time.

While both of their personal drive consists of "Ya'll kill my mom and pa."

Altair was always going to be an assassin. Mother and father both were assassins.. he was groomed for it young.. grew up with the skills.. became complacent and arrogant in his knowledge of said skills and was brought low for ignoring the core values of his brotherhood. That alone is a better story than 99% of the other games.

Uhm... yea. That right there is fucking baller. I'm even ok with the hood... but yea. Should most def be black.

I'm 100% confident that the style and clothes choices of Ezio will come back into play here tho. You can avi bet confidently that there will be a "Captain Sparrow" like outfit in there somewhere. Shitty hair beads and all.

The white hood is a trademark of the Assassin. In fact, I am pissed off that the hood is not beaked like all the other hoods.

Besides, you can probably dye your clothes like any other game.

He should've had some kind of tricorn hat pulled real low and a face bandana for assassinations. Something, idk.

For an order trying to hide and blend in with crowds, their choice of clothes not changing for hundreds of years seems pretty dumb. You'd think the "stalker hoodie with bird beak" would've gone out of style and gotten suspicious eventually.

Having a monk with a beaked hoodie carrying swords and knives was already suspicious in the original Assassin's Creed. It didn't make sense from the very start, but it was cool nontheless.

This is not about realism, but about a series trademark. You don't remove Master Chief's helmet, you don't remove Mario's hat, you don't remove the Assassin's white beaked hoodie.

I keep waiting to catch up and play these games but every time I do, there's another game coming out. What the fuck?

Yeah, last one I played was AC2. I'm not sure I want to go through 3 AC games to catch up for this one. Or should I just skip the named ones and go straight to AC3?

I played AC1, AC2, and Brothehood. I couldn't finish Revelations and barely played AC3 for more than a few hours.
I think I'm getting bored of Assassin's Creed?

Totally agree that the Assassin's garb is played out. Why couldn't they approach it like they did with AC Liberation? I mean, most of the other assassin's in the universe dress relatively normal. Nope not the main char though, gotta keep looking like Altair to keep them sales up :(

Yeah, you'd think that thanks to the pirate-y look of Aveline they'd do something similar to this dude. Nope, though, here's Altair with a few guns.

Altair looks like he could blend in with people. With Ezio it was tolerable, though he did stick out a lot. Connor was really bad and this guy takes the crown really.

You call him uninspired but then you want generic pirate? How about a a parrot on his shoulder too. They can make a eagle/parrot vision. Send the parrot out to scout distance ships on the horizon.

I mean, I don't want the full generic pirate stuff. A hook hand or a peg leg or something like that; not all of those things at once. I just want them to have a little fun with it. Do something different. The current character design is just so dull.

That parrot idea is good though. :)

If he was that elaborately dressed, his ninja-like abilities could be compromised (and some people would complain about it being too different).

Right, but I think he actually stands out even more with his white assassin's garb. Give him some brown clothes at the very least. And get rid of the stupid hood.
