Lying in bed watching Cinema on the PlayStation VR

I'm so hyped for this. This is one of the few things I want to do. Just let lay down on my back in bed and watch a movie or play Playstation 4 games while my wife watches TV. Man, thank you Sony!! I tried it with the Vita, but remote play on those controls are clunky. This is the real solution to my issue, plus my wife want to watch her movies on the PlayStation VR too. Anybody else feels the same way?

This might not be practical, the head tracking lights are at the front and back.. I don't know how it would track you.

I'm sure the novelty will wear off rather quickly. I'd rather set up remote play on my Macbook Pro, then HDMI it onto another TV to play games if the main TV is occupied.

Im probably going to throw up, but Im excited to be able to play Rocket League while my wife/kids use the TV for something else.

I tried with the Rift but the headset gets way too hot to be comfy and all the cables are a nightmare. I think we are probably a (phone) generation or two away though from mobile phone VR enclosures making this dream a reality for just streaming video content.

I believe the Medium and Large screen sizes need to still track you since the "screen" is bigger than the field of view, but the Small screen in Cinematic mode will always be in front of you.

If you're willing to sacrifice IQ and you're close enough to your PS4, sure, this could work..

No I'm not playing VR games I'm going to just play the regular PlayStation 4 games and watch Cinema movies.

But seriously, porn on cinema mode? Anybody with the PSVR headsets in the bed or the tub has tried it yet? I need someone do a review on this ASAP: P

Sure, you could put it in Small, but it would be like holding a really poor res smartphone in front of your face.

Feels like it would be incredibly impractical over many other options (tablet, TV, laptop) as well as probably not looking great, movie wise.

So wait, tracking is turned off in Cinema Mode? As in the picture stays static when you move your head? I thought that developers were advised to not do that even for loading screens, let alone a whole movie.

I've been watching movies/etc... in VR in bed for almost 2 years with my Oculus DK2 and it's just as amazing as you'd imagine. I still do it almost daily.

Op, it really is the best.

People are getting mixed up here. The headset itself has gyros etc inside to allow for rotational tracking, just like the Gear VR does, no camera required. I believe this is what the cinema screen mode uses. The camera/lights are required for positional tracking within games. The cinema mode obviously just won't have positional tracking, i.e. if you move a foot forward the virtual screen won't get a foot closer to you.

Well if it was turned on and the OP what's to lie in bed and use it, he'll get a great view of the cinema ceiling.

There have been loads of HMDs specifically for films in th last 10 years, Sony have even made them. No tracking at all

The hell, that sounds horrible. The wires all running to your bed. having the headset strapped to your head while laying down. Such a horrible image.

Figures. I wonder if Sony is going to come up with some extension cables for the VR headset so I can watch the screen from a distance from my PS4. I say about 20 feet is about right for an extension cable.

Someone here hasn't seen The Matrix. By moving the cable around properly you can probably relax in bed and not have to worry about all that extra cables.

The smallest size does not need tracking, the screen is always fixed. But I don't know if OP wants to use that screen size. Larger ones need tracking since screen is floating in the 3D space in front of the user.

Will PSVR allow you to have it on without the camera able to see any of the points of light? I've seen a bunch of the "we can't see the headset" things in some streams but it doesn't look like it'll let you leave the screen without reestablishing the camera and lights.

Whenever I hear people talk about cinema mode I can only imagine that they've never actually tried VR.

It might be cool once or twice as a novelty, or useful in a pinch when no TV is available. But with the current state of the IQ and the cable setup, it's certainly not something you'd want to do regularly.

It just amazes me that in the same forum where people obsess over negligible differences in resolution and frame rates and textures there are also people who are eager to watch "cinema" on a screen with the image quality of a 3DS.

I watch movies lying down with Gear VR. It doesn't depend on head tracking lights to track your head movement.

I use my Gear VR to watch movies pretty regularly. A good transfer with no color banding is all you really need. The scale of the virtual screen eliminates most, if not all resolution issues. Quality is comparable to being at an actual movie theater.

I mostly use it for 3D films, the 3D looks fantastic and much better than glasses 3D. But i also use it for 2D films. It's surprisingly clear if you get a good rip. For the record, I use the Void. It's incredibly immersive.

Wouldn't it be hard to fall asleep afterwards though? Seems like it would be a hard transition for your brain, like checking your phone right before bed x 1 million.

All 26 hours. Multiple times.
i tried this with netflix. although the resolution is an issue (HD looks more like a DVD) it is crazy cool to lie down and havin a 120" Screen right infront of your face everything else blacked out!

It is really cool.

i will definatly use this.
not always, but its too good to ignore.

Is VR porn even compatible with PSVR?

How would that even work considering you can't import video files on PS4 via USB like you could on PS3?

.

I'm not a resolution snob but I don't think I would be a fan of using it to watch anything. The combo of me using a projector while gf has headphones and a tablet works well.

Although I do love the mental image of a wife laying next to her husband who has a VR helmet on, with a cable running out of it, and "cinema" playing.

I watched most of Daredevil season 2 in a Gear VR in bed. It wasn't that bad actually. I'm more worried about laying down in the PSVR because of the wires and the back head band.

From the tiny tiny bit I've seen of cinema mode. It's a static screen in front of you like most "void" players. No matter where you look the screen will be front and center. There could be other settings.

So basically like a GearVR? Yeah, that should be fine. Just hit the recenter button and enjoy your media.

Or he/she could just recenter the headset. I forgot about Sony's HMDs and yeah those didn't have any tracking. I guess I'm just used to some sort of tracking when watching stuff in VR.

In cinema mode, if you set the screen to "small" it turns tracking off and the image is always rendered directly in front of your eyes.

For medium and large, tracking is on.

There are three render sizes to cinema mode. Tracking is enabled for medium and large sizes, and disabled for small.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.

They know exactly what they're doing don't they?

You guys should check out some of the IMAX 3D videos when you get the opportunity. 3D pop-out is amazing, especially in the ocean documentaries.

Also, don't listen to the resolution critics. The issues with resolution in video with scalable virtual screens is much less so than the resolution problems of games. It really depends on the source file. I think a really good rip is also better than streaming. A lot of streaming sources look like ass.

360 film, btw, is a really amazing medium. I see tons of potential there. Again, though, if you can download the (often huge) video files, do it. I find streaming 360 video tends too look like total shit. Too blocky, blurry. They scale the resolution based on your connection and it's either max or bust when it comes to enjoyment.
