Lying in bed watching Cinema on the PlayStation VR

If all you want VR for is to play PS4 or watch stuff when the TV is in use then a laptop solved that problem a long time ago.

Nah, give me a virtual 100" screen over a 13" real screen anyday, this is just limited by res at the moment. I can't wait for the tech to mature so we can see the dpi start increasing.

Gosh I would *never* stain my experience by shitting on the sound and picture like that OP, groosssssssss!

Glad you are enjoying it OP, curious what it looks like myself, though it may or may not work for me.

I'm not a resolution snob but I don't think I would be a fan of using it to watch anything. The combo of me using a projector while gf has headphones and a tablet works well.

Although I do love the mental image of a wife laying next to her husband who has a VR helmet on, with a cable running out of it, and "cinema" playing.

Lol

Not quite. Your phone's content will still be pretty sharp, and the vidoe will use all the pixels on the phone's panel.

That's not the case in VR. Not all the pixels on the panel are used to render the image, and the image will be a representation of the video at a much lower resolution since it's a projected canvas in 3D virtual space.

It will be more like watching a real video player stream (remember those?) or a low quality youtube stream than watching your HD phone.

If you've ever used one of those $100 ultra portable subHD projectors, you might have an idea of what ti woudl be like. IT looks cool for like 5 minutes, having that HD movie up on a big wall... and then you realize how low quality it is and you go back to watching it on your TV.

I was more talking about the idea of it not being ideal, just something that's there if you need it. The actual visual quality obviously doesn't compare.

Basically, "I rather watch it on my TV but I'm okay watching on my tablet when the wife is using the TV." Vs " I rather watch on my TV but I'm okay watching in my VR headset when the wife is using the TV."

Which is literally the equivalent of holding a device closer to your face or moving closer to a TV/Monitor.

If you look at my post history you'll see I'm firmly in support of VR. But there are uses where it just doesn't do what it needs to/should as the tech or iteration just isn't there yet. Or where issues are caused by outside sources like encryption or otherwise reduce quality. The point is though people can be excited as they want, but should temper their expectations when comparing to existing hardware and methods. I just don't want people getting the wrong idea about what it offers and then our having something based on hype.

Have you ever used a VR headset besides Google Cardboard? The optics in modern VR headsets eliminate that feeling of having a screen in your face.

Why not watch something on your phone or tablet while lying anywhere? I don't see why anyone would want to use a VR helmet for this.

Because in VR it feels like you are looking at a giant cinema screen and not a tiny ass screen?

The only problem is the resolution makes its a poor experience.

There are plenty of other problems. I know this gets old, but I really feel like people should understand that the actual experience will probably be less than ideal for a lot of people.

I own a Gear. I've used the DK1, DK2, Rift and PSVR. VIVE and OSVR are the only major HMD's I haven't used.

PSVR doesnt look like it would work well lying down due to the way it sits on the head

GearVR can do that now and probably better as a pure movie watching VR set

That makes a lot of people sick and in my opinion is a really shitty way to view video. There is a reason in VR games video is in the world and not stuck to your face. Anyways I've done with the my Vive and it's not great. Even in a virtual cinema (with positional tracking) the quality isn't nearly what you get with a television and it's just not a comfortable way to watch movies. I'm sure PSVR is physically more comfortable, but for 2 hours, laying down etc? No way. Yes the idea of a huge screen is cool, but the tech isn't quite there yet. It probably will be sooner rather than later though.

EDIT: Also if it is an actual virtual cinema with positional tracking then you need to constantly reset your center if you are moving the camera or positioning yourself on a bed. This is hard to describe but if you try to do this it will become very apparent.

It will track X/Y movement, just not Z. You don't need Z movement in a virtual cinema setting.

Why even use a tablet then? Just use your phone and move it closer to your eyes.

Even though you're being sarcastic. There is a distance where it becomes uncomfortable to be that close to a handheld device as the eye doesn't focus as well for many. Introduces strain. So a tablet is usually a good compromise. The tablet provides significantly better quality of picture and clarity. So he's not wrong. As I stated before like many others I used the VR for a short period for TV/Movies but the novelty wore off very fast and I switched back to tablet as it provided a better viewing experience. Hell even my phone did.

While generally I agree with what you're saying, I don't agree with holding your tablet close enough is as good as a large screen. I've never felt holding a smaller screen close to you to simulate a larger screen size was even close to replicating the real thing. So I think some day VR could actually simulate the experience and be better than holding up a device to your face once the resolution gets high enough. Right now though it's not even close.

No I'm not playing VR games I'm going to just play the regular PlayStation 4 games and watch Cinema movies.

But seriously, porn on cinema mode? Anybody with the PSVR headsets in the bed or the tub has tried it yet? I need someone do a review on this ASAP: P

its not going to be comfortable at all either way.

Tbh I don't know much about how the VR looks IRL at all, but wouldn't it be inferior to a TV? Does it give the illusion that the screen is bigger and off in the distance (like above theater)? Is the resolution bearable after watching Blu-Ray? Wouldn't hurt your eyes?

I really need to try one of them.

It does give the illusion the screen is bigger and inthe distance but the image quality is way worse compared to a Blu-ray.

Most people I've talked to say it's just not a viable way to consistently watch movies/tv shows. Unfortunately the IQ is a serious problem with that resolution and a 110 degree FOV.

People still think these devices are suitable for watch7ng movies? Most people won't last a week before the reality of image quality (and ergonomics..) from twenty years back in time becomes too overwhelming. It is a cool first experience though.

The PSVR can fake distance, but the video game graphics pulls you back to reality in a way. Like you can clearly see distance with the headset in game. But there is a theater effect when popping up the quick menu (AKA The PS button on your controller) but this is intentional.

The worse thing about the headset is the screen door effect, but that only happens when you don't properly adjust your headset.

I'm so hyped for this. This is one of the few things I want to do. Just let lay down on my back in bed and watch a movie or play Playstation 4 games while my wife watches TV. Man, thank you Sony!! I tried it with the Vita, but remote play on those controls are clunky. This is the real solution to my issue, plus my wife want to watch her movies on the PlayStation VR too. Anybody else feels the same way?
If you're going to just ignore your wife why not get a divorce?

Like watching a giant cinema screen that's playing a CAM version of a movie while you are wearing vaseline smothered glasses.

Just watched some 1080p Planet Earth in PSVR, looked like a good DVD on a TV the size of my wall. Probably won't use it often but it's a pretty neat feature.

Perhaps one cheap solution for your mobile would be much better in this case. GearVR even has a higher resolution than PSVR.

See, that sounds pretty cool.

Numbers wise yes, but with full RGB for the pixel layout PSVR might have perceptibly similar or higher resolution as confirmed by some impressions when comparing it against GearVR, Vive, and Rift.
