Edge #305/May - Rime (Also Persona 5 review)

As someone who played Persona 5 last year and considered it the best game I'd played in TEN YEARS, an 8 is criminal. Boo this magazine.

I've always had the impression that whoever Edge farms their JRPG reviews out to doesn't have much enthusiasm for them, not from the scores but from the text. Compounded with what are often very limited word counts, I'd say Edge's JRPG reviews are some of the least useful out there.

No, first part was a joke, btw. the second part I want to know the answer to.

Ha okay, I thought the post was out of character. Yeah I'm curious to know what they think of it. Same for Nier.

They enjoy innovation in story or gameplay. If a JRPG has either or both, it'll be received warmly. Has nothing to do with the genre itself.

Seems like Persona 5 and Nier are rather lowly scored here. A 9 should have been more like it. But who am I to judge. Haven't played them yet.

It will be interesting to see what Edge has to say about Persona 5. I think it is a much better designed game than Persona 4, not to mention it looks and sounds absolutely stunning. It is defintely one of the best role-playing games I've ever played, but I can see some people justifiably complain about some of the plot points like
gay panic jokes and heavy handed fanservice
. I also thought the battle system in #FE (Edge gave it a 7) is better overall, so I can see someone not being fully satisfied with P5 battles after playing #FE.

Their reviews are often times quite different from the rest of the review scores. Remember this WRPG review scores from EDGE on a thread few years ago?
Dragon Age - 5/10
Mass Effect - 7/10
Jade Empire - 7/10
KotOR - 9/10
Neverwinter Nights - 9/10
Baldur's Gate 2 - 8/10
Fallout 3 - 7/10
Oblivion - 8/10
Morrowind - 6/10
Fallout - 7/10
The Witcher - 5/10
The Witcher 2: Assassin's of Kings - 6/10
Arcanum - 5/10
Temple of Elemental Evil - 4/10
Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines - 6/10
KotOR 2 - 7/10
Neverwinter Nights 2 - 8/10
Diablo - 7/10
Diablo 2 - 6/10

I am not saying their reviews are wrong or bad, but simply their reviews shouldn't be used to predict what P5's metacritic score will end up.

Oh boy this is the perfect opportunity to bitch about games from different genres, offering different gameplay and targetted at different gamers having the same score. :)

On reading the review of Persona 5.

I think it comes down to it just not being different enough from the previous Persona games. (They also mention the share function is not working on PS4 but I don't think that affected the score)

Which is fair, I thought that might be the case before I started reading the review.

Since Snipperclips has the same score as Persona 5, I can assume with perfectly reasonable logic and common sense that it wil have the same metascore, so 80/100. Another failure from Atlus. SAD !

An 8 for Persona of all things is great. Let's not act like Persona is some world wide brand of amazingness. P4 has asscombat and dungeons, I doubt they completely fixed these issues in 5. It's not a perfect franchise.

They open arguing that Persona 5's weakness is familiarity and close saying it is "simply put, cool". The format of a school year means it lacks surprise. The changes to dungeons from Persona 4 to 5 may have already been seen in Tokyo Mirage Sessions. While there is a change in pace to the dungeons because of stealth and dialogue in battle, its strength remains in the social simulator and side activities.

"A creeping subtext about the importance of a stable family life [...] is less succesful, making a stuffily old-fashioned point about the nuclear family that seems at odds with the game's attempt to celebrate rather than demean."

I don't agree with those scores, Nier and Persona 5 are way underrated, 9 would be the least those games deserve but I guess we can forget Persona 5 being a 95% title over at MC already :/

You sir, are crazy, comparing 5-hour Snipperclips with 150-hour Persona 5. It will reach at least a 90 on Meta, just wait and see.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

This kinda sounds fair.
Still hyped for P5 - even if its "just" the same ole P3/P4 template. First HD Persona after all.

Typically point and laugh at those that complain about scores, but an Edge 8 for Snipperclips seems really generous, particularly when the little masterpiece that is Nier receives the same score.

That Ghost Recon: Wildlands review...

It must be a tough game to review though. This video highlights the problem perfectly imo. An undeniably broken and bug ridden game, with quest designs universally hated (escort someone? Yay...) and without even fleshing out those quests with rich characters or writing to make up for it. Bad quests, with broken AI.

But at the same time, LOOK HOW MUCH FUN THESE GUYS ARE HAVING =D And that's the part Wildlands nails. It gives players a really rich toolset of options and mechanics to play around with to create their own fun, because the core game itself certainly isn't going to provide any. But how do you review that? It's like you need two separate reviews: one for people who plan to play with friends, and another for those who plan to play solo.

Witcher 3 got an 8 from Edge. Over 90 on Metacritic.
Same will probably be the case for Persona 5.
An 8 from Edge is a great score. People whining must be unfamiliar with the publication.

Persona 5 officially confirmed to be bad
I am cancelling my pre-order

Fuck, an 8 score from edge is like a 4/10 from IGN

Those are different games, different genres. They try to do completely different things and they are reviewed based on that.

Why does it have to be different? I don't want different and I'm glad Persona 5 is the same. That's what makes the series so damn amazing to me.

It just sounds like they had a real good time with the co-op. The music was repetitive or annoying and some of the party games missed the mark. Basketball and air hockey were highlights of the party games.

They're not saying it has to be different. They're saying that the game struggles to surprise you because it sticks rigidly to a familiar format.

It is, not reaching a 95 means it will yet again not get the attention it deserves and stay in its niche, even though it's most likely one of the best games of this whole generation.
Let's be real. Even with a 95 it wont still be as popular as you hope.

That will come in increments. Maybe during P6.

Well, Dark Souls is their number one game of all time, so there's that.

Dark Souls is a very "different" type of RPG though. Seems like they like unique games the most, might also be a reason why they gave a game like Skyward Sword a 10.

Let's be real. Even with a 95 it wont still be as popular as you hope..

You're most likely right, I'm starting to calm down a little, but only a little!

It doesn't have to be, but if some people wanted something new innovative, then they'll be disappointed.

Not everyone wants the same things.

It could score a perfect 100 and it would still be a very niche title. The very nature of the Persona games ensures that it's not breaking into the mainstream anytime soon.

So this is a false premise. This is still a game for fans of the Persona formula, and seemingly a very good one at that.

This game lost 90% of appeal to me when it lose its exclusivity, it doesn't lose it for nothing.
Ah yes' the old 'I game on Y, if people on system X can also enjoy the game, it ecomes detrimental to my enjoyment'

See also, FF and DMC

Thanks for the summary. Like the game, and love my Switch, but just a couple years ago and it's a solid Edge 7.

That's cool that you are glad that it's more of the same but it's also fine if someone likes a game a lot but also wishes that there were some innovations.

Instead of just moaning about a score you could also read the review in which they no doubt explain their reasoning for said score.

Scores are meaningless without context.
