We really should just use .WebP instead.
2.7 times file size reduction when compared to .GIF - not as much as .WebP, but there's no sound, works on <img> tags and doesn't burn your cpu to a crisp: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=107290472&postcount=289
I wish 4chan allowed support for those instead.

WebP is only supported in Webkit browsers like Chrome and Opera at the moment. Until the other browsers have completed their implementation, I don't think it can be used as a replacement.
Gifs are a lot worse.

I hope not, WIF doesn't make any sense to me. Just call them WebM's or something. No need to try to link them in with GIF's as they are entirely different formats that have nothing to do with each other. I don't call PNG files PNPEGS or whatever.
We shouldn't use IMG tags at all because Lynx users can't see them.
It's not like Chrome isn't available everywhere.
Nice work, One suggestion: it would be nice to have an option to hide the FF media controls by default on all embedded webms. You normally don't need video controls for the gif use case, and when you do you can still unhide them.WebM for NeoGAF FireFox Addon 0.3

Only preloads metadata data and should save bandwidth as well as CPU load. There is a dummy Autoplay property within the addon preferences which does nothing at the moment.

Compared to a gif thread, this is all relatively very low in data. And that's assuming the webm script you'd be using has autoplay.

Well, now we can't even get a glimpse lol. I mean on android I was able to open them I'm an external video player, but that's annoying. Not even sure if you could play it on iOS.
