Nyko introduces PS4 Data Bank - 3.5" HD bay

I am getting original PS2 HDD adapter vibes from it.

Im pretty sure my PS2 had the hdd in the ethernetadapter on the backside, so you didnt see it.

Agreed. 1tb is easily managed. If you're filling up then you're playing too many games without finishing others. 2tb is enough room to not have to worry. Anymore is just being incredibly lazy.

Some people like to keep all their games on the hdd for when the service eventually goes down or want to save on bandwidth or to keep for storage.

Sure, it's ugly. The Nyko logo is the biggest offender in my eyes. That said, though, for someone who wants a cheap BIG HDD, this is an awesome attachment. Since I'm probably going to wait for a hardware revision before I buy a PS4 for myself (my roommate has one in the living room), the cost of a 2.5" 2TB drive will likely not be an issue for me.

If I had a PS4 now, and wanted an inexpensive way to stuff more than half a TB into my console, I'd definitely consider this.

yes... my PS4 is in the dark anyway, not like anyone sees how it looks.

This has a 2 TB 5400 RPM HDD within the enclosure that you can use--it's actually a Samsung drive despite being a Seagate enclosure. I personally find the 5400 RPM fine. The RPM specifications may be the same as the stock drive, but with the 2 TB having a higher GB density per platter, it is--for a fact--faster than the stock drive.

I've just installed this very 2 TB HDD into my PS4, and put the stock 500GB HDD back into the Seagate Enclosure to use as an external portable drive at a later date. Very impressed with it. Got it from PC World/Currys at the Meadowhall Retail Park in Sheffield (England) for £75.00

Got the same one from Amazon last month for £55 and also doing the same as you although it now has a 1TB drive in the enclosure as I had already upgraded my drive previously.

Actually ended up downloading my games twice over December due to getting a new LE PS4 and swapping the drive back out again.

Just the 1.7TB for the month!

Pretty cool idea. Don't understand people's reaction to the design, it has to go somewhere and at least it keeps it compact.

It's not just the size, 3.5" drives are generally much faster and cheaper.

Is nobody concerned about how hot it may get? Or do the bigger drives run cool? My external 3TB for my XB1 gets a little warm

Who cares? Its outside the console.

Strange how they say 'Cheapest way to get a 2TB PS4' Yet my 2TB PS4 cost me £55, cheapest I can see 2TB drives for in 3.5 size is currently £53.50 on Amazon, so unless this piece of plastic costs £1.50 then I think they might be billing it as something it's not.

It seems like an odd way to sell it regardless, given that there are 2TB 2.5" drives in the market. Combining the cost of this, plus a 2TB 3.5" drive would almost have to be more expensive across the board.

What this is really good for is the power user that wants 3TB or 4TB in their PS4. But that might be such a niche market that Nyko doesn't want to pigeon hole themselves into just serving those potential buyers.

When does Xbone get this?

Xbone has external storage and lacks a properly swappable/accessible internal access to make something like this possible. Just use an external and hide it well, will look even better than this if you can squirrel it away well enough.

yeah after seeing that it draws power from the ps4 power cord I'll pass. Even tho its before the psu and wouldn't make a difference, makes me unconfortable

That concerns me a bit too. I'm sure it draws power from the wall not via the PS4 PS, but it's still a passthrough directly to the internal PS. I like the overall idea and would consider getting this, but I'll wait for user reviews before committing.

I thought the design looked fine. But in the video it looks huuuge. Also, the power cord will need to be tucked down or it looks odd.
And didn't they have problems with power passing adapters before? No fires please.

Got a 2 TB hdd at the moment but quite interested in this, particularly as it doesn't need another power socket. Really not confident that isn't going to burst into flames though as Nyko tend to build crap.

Xbox One doesn't need this; it got storage expansion right on day one.
Not on day one though. Internal HDD can't be changed and external was added on a firmware update a few months ago.

Still, the main problem continues: you can't backup/transfer anything, so you have to download over 500GB again. Which in my case is 24/7 non stop...if the internet connection works without problems.

This is a cool idea.

Based on the speed testing metrics I've seen, it seems a fast HDD (7200 of greater) actually gives you the best results. Better than hybrids overall ... and SSD's aren't really taken advantage of. Of course the worry with doing an internal 7200 2.5" drive has been heat. This looks to rectify that.

I guess the question is does anyone offer really quiet 7200 3.5" internal drives?

Okay, if you want to do that, go ahead. If others prefer this, why the fuck should you care?

Nyko blew up PS3s with their fan accessory. I'd be careful about Nyko products, also with the fact that it is looking ugly like sin.

And there's also the fact that it costs $30-40, more than the actual cost of getting a 2.5" version of the same storage space. AND the fact that there is no guarantee that your 3.5 inch whatever 3+ TB hdds will even work on the PS4.

Or maybe spend some more money for a 2.5 drive so you're console doesn't look like shit and works vertically.

Some people like myself dont care if it can be stood up vertically. I personally dont understand the craze for that since for me it is one bump and $400 potentially down the drain.

Okay? Again, do whatever you want, if somebody wants this for a much larger drive, why do you give a fuck?

Go look on youtube. There are people rocking 6TB drives. I am sure 8TB will work as well. I dont think it is a very good option if you are just going to dump a 2TB drive in there. Might as well just get an internal drive. But if you want to be set for the rest of the generation and not have to delete games you might not want to delete larger capacity is now an option.

I knew this would require some sort of extra power as shown in that video. I think that automatically makes rest mode a no go since it can't manage the power of the drive.

Aw crap, that's disappointing ... but makes sense.

Though I can't see it happening, it would be awesome if PS4 supported multiple drives. Put a small, cheap SSD in as your OS drive ... then an HDD like this for your game installs. That way it could power down for sleep mode.

Of course the alternative would be if they didn't cheap out and actually had dedicated storage for the firmware like in the early PS3 revs :\

Gotta love this. Console warring and factually incorrect all in one short post, bravo.

Now onto what this thread is actually about. Any thoughts about external raid arrays? As long as we're thinking big :)

Any chance Sony may lock this out with a firmware update? I'm kind of worried that Sony may think pirates or hackers could use this in some way. That's the only thing that would keep me from buying it.

Wrong.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-hard-drive/

From the start, MS was behind forward thinking to make internal and external storage the same; everything internal can do, external can do, the way it should be. The fact that you cannot add storage to a PS4, merely replace it is an extremely valid criticism. If I buy a 2TB hard drive for example, I will get better value from it by using it on Wii U or Xbox one because I am ADDING to my storage, not replacing it.

I actually just made a thread on the issue. It's not console warring, it's the truth; at this point in time, the PS4's competition has more forward thinking options when it comes to storage, it's that simple. Now, if so chose to, they could be a lot more consumer-friendly by allowing the choice of external storage with a system update (if it can even be done).

With its competiton, and a product like this (however awesome it may be) coming out, I HOPE Sony feels the pressure; only good can come from giving the consumer the choice of storage expansion. I don't see how wanting choice that can only benefit PS4 owners is "factually incorrect console warring". This product is great, and helps solve a real issue in a decent way, but Sony holds in its hands a proper solution to a problem some of us consider incredibly short-sighted. As a future PS4 owner, I say this whole-heartedly.

I like this option since it allows desktop drives they are faster and larger than their laptop counterparts. Would have been nice if Sony had included rear USB 3.0 and external support but oh well.
