New Halo 5 Coverage! (expect spoilers)

Does anyone else think the white colour on the Spartans looks awful?

Is there a reason for it compared to other games?

I'm not sure what exactly you are referring to. Are you talking about the highlighter lines covering the armor in the picture below? Those really are an eye sore, but I'm almost certain they would be something you can change in the customization options.

Good stuff! I hope they keep the guy doing the music, he is doing a great job, and understands what makes the Halo theme feel Halo

Yes! At a distance the models look horrid, everything is jagged and washed out on those white lines, hopefully youtube compression is partially to blame. It technically looks bad, aesthetically it would be okay, but it seems the game can't handle it.

Maybe Microsoft edited the final cut of the commercial when the the narrator talks about Chief killing civilians to avoid anything
that links to the recent shooting at Oregon, it makes sense.

All the purchasable REQ stuff is also grindable, correct?
I believe that all you can buy with real money are the packs themselves, which have the same random loot as the ones you get with in-game currency. There might be a couple exclusive things though (the Halo controllers each come with a unique visor, there's an emblem you can get from watching a video on Halo Channel, certain things unlock from MCC achievements, etc).

On the whole seeing the community decline from 2009 to 2015 was depressing, and MCC's aftermath was painful. I'm still nostalgic about posting on bnet, which is where I came from before joining GAF.

Halo 5 will improve things, but it'll never be the glory days again.

RIP b.net. Bungie turned it from a great forum into twitter/reddit. smh

The glory days can't return because the people you played with are in different chapters of their life. Halo 5 will probably be amazing, but most of the people I played with then back then have moved on to other games, or don't game at all really. I'll just enjoy it for what it is now, nothing will ever recapture the feeling of being 18 and having no responsibility other than to poop on kids in Halo, lol.

Thanks, sounds fine to me as long as most of the main stuff is grindable, without extra purchasing. Though I may end up buying a REQ pack or two, stranger things have happened.

I think the Master Chief, due to a much more serious impending threat, is possibly activating these 'guardian' devices because they will be desperately needed in order to protect humanity against whatever is coming next. These things may not all necessarily be threats to humanity, but due to the sheer scale of destruction caused upon their awakening, it makes sense how people would view anyone that is potentially activating such things -- whether intentionally or unintentionally -- as a threat that needs to be stopped at all costs.

I agree. They haven't shown the villain yet, but I assume the didact is building an army or something for humanity's extinction.

I didn't know very many Halo fans post Halo 3... in fact I've met more of them in the last year than the previous 8 years combined. I'm talking about the major community hubs across the net. Most are a shadow of what they once were...hell I don't think I've seen a single Halo 5 post on the default frontpage of reddit since its announcement.

I just think that's gaming as a whole. Everything has moved to minimal TTK multiplayer, and people don't like having to shoot someone 4-5 times to get a kill. Nothing 343 can do about that, sadly.

Can't wait for the game to launch and to have the community thread back. For any mods reading, this is what HaloGAF meant to the Halo community back in the day and why many of us joined.
Urgh. I remember that third match. It was awful. Sniper Rifle was way too powerful compared to the Focus Rifle. Especially since it exposes the position of the user which is a dead sentence. My biggest mark of shame.

Anyway, I expected a link to a Halo 3 thread. Not to a special opportunity playing against the developers which every fan wants to do at some point :p

Halo Escalation spoilers:

Blue Team fought the Didact and he got composed by like 20 Composers. His current state is unclear, because we don't know what happens to a Forerunner if he gets composed.

So, it's pretty unclear who the main villain will be. It looked like it would be the Warden Eternal, whoever that actually is.

With Warden Eternal being a Warzone boss, I would have to imagine it's not him.

Can't decide between going for a fleshed out H5OT or the opposite, a minimal OT.

I'd happily keep the first post updated over time, but I dunno if it's worth it for the dozen folks that will ever look at it past the release date.

Hoping the Forge reveal is the last major reveal for the game.

Oh, I haven't even pre-ordered yet. Hmmm.

I'm aware of that storyline, but i think he'll be back. 343 would've killed him off in 4 if they didn't have plans on him returning. They aren't going to kill him off in something that a big portion of the fan base won't read.

In the description to the bolt shot in the REQ menu it says "burst fire energy bolts home in on close range targets. This new functionality appears to be related to other adaptations the Prometheans have displayed since the disappearance of the Didact"
So it's very possible he isn't gone for good.

Go for the fleshed out OT, dawg. A new Halo OT only comes once every few years.

There's nothing quite like a fleshed out GAF OT. Still remember going through MGS4's for the first time. Maybe get some of the great Hunt The Truth stuff in there.

I really hope the Didact does turn up again in Halo 5.

'You need to have read the books to understand what's going on' is a common complaint levelled at Halo 4, but I thought the Didact's appearance was a bit shit even having read them. The game really wasted him, I read an entire trilogy of novels about the guy and all he does is turn up in two cutscenes then dies in a QTE.

The Didact is a really cool character who deserves much better than his Halo 4 appearance. If he really is dead then that sucks.

I'd say keep it simple and only put information in there that people actually need to inform themselves about the game to a certain level.

I'm not really sure if they do could him right after 4, especially since he seemingly died if you didn't read the EU stuff. Also if he does come back I hope they give him a re-design because he honestly looked like a power ranger villain.

That doesn't have to mean anything.

Don't read past this, if you care for huge spoilers:

There was a huge spoiler in the The Sprint Season 3, where the script got leaked and the Warden Eternal got killed by Locke, while Chief is lying on the ground being seemingly dead.

I'm aware of that storyline, but i think he'll be back. 343 would've killed him off in 4 if they didn't have plans on him returning. They aren't going to kill him off in something that a big portion of the fan base won't read.

Well, you say that, but then I look at the things happening in Halo Escalation and wonder if they are ever going to explain it the actual game. Even small things like Blue Team's reunion or big things like where Dr. Halsey actually is and why.

It's going to be interesting how 343i will handle this stuff. I hope they nail it.

Im pretty excited for this, but i need to keep practicing on MCC (halo 4). The problem is that i don't have friends to play with me (forever alone). Anyone on EU that wants company?

What can we compare Halo5 to?
I would say due to mobility options this is definitely the fastest Halo. Makes Halo 2, Reach, and Halo 4 slow in comparison.

Gunplay wise it reminds me of Halo 1 and 3. One person can dominate a game. Gun variety is remained to be seen, but based off the beta seems very balanced.

Maps is remained to be seen, but based off the beta its a mixed bag. However only one I felt was bad. However once you get use to all the maps, it can become fun to play. So I say depending on the person, it seems more like a love hate relationship when maps are concerned.

Ranking is remain to be seen. However I will say this based off the beta I had so much fun playing it that i can honestly say I didn't care about rank. So even if their ranking system is bad, for the first time ever i will not care. However it will be nice to have a fun ranking system again. I still prefer 1-50.

This is the first evolution where i feel the developers got it right for the most part.

I would hope so. One of the biggest complaints from Halo 4 is the need to know the extended universe. I hope they handle the story better this time around. You shouldn't have to consume the extended universe stuff to enjoy the game. It should all be bonus.

BGE: Is there any concern for fans new to the series to be overwhelmed with Halo lore? I’m happy to see Blue Team, but new players may wonder who they are, and why they should care – how do 343 alleviate that issue to ease players new to the series in gently?

Josh: One of the great strengths for Halo is the depth of our universe and lore. We want fans of the lore to feel rewarded for their knowledge, but it can’t be a requisite for understanding and enjoying the games. The campaign for Halo 5 has been designed to be enjoyable as a self-contained story. We have additional details from the extended universe available to players who wish to explore and consume all of the supporting narrative, but those shouldn’t be necessary to understand the central storyline for the game. At the same time, there can be an assumption made that just because a character or place has been explored in the novels or comics, all of that extended story needs to be surfaced in the game in order to make sense. That’s not necessarily the case. There is an economy to storytelling and we strive to provide the necessary amount of information without weighing things down. Comparing this game to Halo 4, I think we’ve done a better job in this regard but ultimately that will be up to players to decide.

:)

Makes me so mad when they carefully blur out everything else and make a rookie mistake like that. Nitwits.

I still don't believe any of it, until I see it on my own in the game. Something tells me ONI took over your studio and is spreading lies.

Was just thinking more of what HaloGAF meant to the Halo community that the devs of the game even acknowledged it to this level. But now it's not worth keeping a thread open here. People knew about HaloGAF in some way, it meant something. And for those who weren't part, we lurked and read until we could join.
