Super Mario Advance 4: SMB 3 out on NA Wii U VC tomorrow, includes e-Reader levels

One of my friends had the E-reader and some cards, I had fun with it in Animal Crossing and SMB3, I'll enjoy the revisit.

I'm not a big virtual console buyer but Earthbound Beginnings, Duck Hunt and SMA4:SMB3 with e-Reader levels are the right way to go. Give us experiences that we can't get via traditional methods!

Not that much of a problem IMO.
Besides, with the release of the New 3DS I'd bet that there's enough power to run them with the system features if they were to bother with it, but it's probably too close to a new handheld to put any effort into 3DS Virtual Console releases.

Hopefully if any portion of the NX is a handheld system then hopefully it'll have a unified eShop and I can get digital GBA games on a portable system

They had to write custom firmware for the 3DS to run the ambassador GBA games. I can understand them wanting to avoid reusing this as much as possible. It isn't really a sustainable way to do software development. They didn't plan on having to make the 3DS do that, so there's bound to be other issues as to why they didn't continue releasing GBA titles.

Yes, I agreed with the n3DS point in my original statement.

I also hope NX has this shit all unified.

Very nice!! Alright now, NOA, we only need Xenoblade Chronicles, Super Mario RPG and Mother 3 over here, and I'll be extremely happy.

Fresh Mario content. We do kind of have Mario Maker for that now admittedly, but this is still official stuff.
One thing that Mario Maker doesn't have yet that this does is Super Mario Bros 2 content like turnips added to those e-reader levels.

So you're telling me I have to re-buy SMB3 and replay it ?

Shit
yes
!

Now I have to wait the EU release. If only those new levels were available in the original style, that would be incredible.

I find it interesting the Boomerang design and item came from the eReader card levels.

A lot of people might assume the power up comes from Mario 3D Land, but nope, first appeared here.

The way the item works in Smash Bros is also more similar to the GBA version, than the 3D Land/World version.

Kind of cool that a rather obscure new power up managed to continue on and even made it into a 3D game. And Smash Bros. And Mario Kart.

On the one hand, I've always really wanted to play the e-Reader levels.

On the other hand, I want to play that, and other GBA games, on my 3DS.

What do I do here?

This is awesome info. Great post.

If I got it right, according GameXplain it will.

Either way, I think this and Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow on 3DS could mean something interesting for future Virtual Console releases in terms of extra features.

All of this stuff, Earthbound Beginnings, rare Wii games, Demons Crest, Earthbound, etc. all show Nintendo's shift in attitude for the VC this gen from "letting gamers keep a library of historical releases" to "bolstering our title lineup and giving more people access to acclaimed games that are hard to get a hold of".

I'm curious if the e-Shop power ups are available. There was a card that put SMB2 style vegetables in the levels that you could pick and throw.

It feels like Nintendo is really hitting its stride with the VC stuff and releasing constant quality now on a weekly basis. It's strange as many are anticipating the NX for this year or early next year.

Why didn't they do this at the start of the Wii U's life??

Their wasn't enough processing oomph to run them properly. At least before the n3DS. And I don't think they're gonna invest that much in them if they'd only run on a fragment of the 3DS market.

Sucks, but thems the breaks.

They ran fine. They ran freaking natively for goodness sakes—you can't get better than that!

I know, I'm an ambassador.

They also, btw, had incredible battery life. I've gotten TEN hours out of my 3DS when playing GBA games. I often play them when the battery is low but I still have a long train ride ahead of me, and the system lasts forever.

Yeah, so sleep mode didn't work. Big woop. Sleep mode didn't work when you played GBA games on the original DS either. Nintendo still saw fit to include the compatibility.

Were the hallowed eReader levels good? Despite having an eReader and Super Mario Advance 1 through 3, I never got around to buying SMA4: SMB3 (what a title)

I think it's because actual new releases are drying up, so they're trying to pad out the lineup.

Yes, that's Mario Bros 3 with Mario Bros 2 Turnip pulling, with Mario World Charging Chucks. Makes Mario Maker look tame by comparison.

They were VERY good, they did things that no other mario game had done before. The mechanics of mixing all the games together was great, the levels were like all the worlds had collided. Plus using the additional modifiers using the E switches to add even more game changing fun like making the game even harder.

Pretty cool that they are adding the E-reader stuff but i wouldn't hold my breath for any of the promo levels from corocoro or the B dash de kakenukero level. Not sure if the are adding the switches and if so how will they even work, if they are going to be added to the rom. The switches required you to scan the card to turn them on & off.

Back in the day the e-reader was totally my thing i collected the hell out of it, have many complete sets of cards for the thing. I would have picked this new re-release up but i already have a complete set of Jp e-reader cards so not really much point in getting this for me. But if anyone hasn't enjoyed the weirdness of the e levels then hell yeah go for it you won't be dissappointed :)

Still have my boxes of unopened cards along with a binder that contains all my treasured complete sets. Man i miss e-reader cards :( Amiibo cards are the closest thing now.

They did blind packs for the levels? Oh, that's evil.

Awesome collection! How are the Pikmin cards? I've always desperately wanted to try that game.

Oh yeah you better believe it, made getting them a nightmare they were difficult to complete sets as the cards were totally random in booster packs. Coupled with that fact that even back when they were released it was near impossible to find any packs in Japan for some e-series.

There were only a couple of series in Japan that had fixed cards inside packs, mainly been pikmin & pokemon collosseum. All the rest were random.

It's pretty good, each card holds several puzzle levels so you are essentially getting another full game if you had all the cards. It made me quite sad that they removed the mode from pikmin 2 for the rest of the world as the little puzzle levels were a lot of fun.

more of this is always good

I was happy when the boot reappeared in the ereader levels, it was used in many fun ways. Finally was able to enjoy abusing thwomps, see how they liked getting stomped on for a change hehe.

I wonder if it's all of them, or just the ones released in the US.

yeah, petty exciting announcement but this is my exact question as well

see im down for all of this

Am I remembering wrong or didn't the complete collection never even make it to the US? They only released like 75% of it or something, no?

They're probably going to carry all of this over into the NX (as I imagine its built to be future proof, for the most part) which is why the 3DS VC died. That one is likely untennable to carry forward and is just lost costs.

So think of it as starting early, lol.

I think it's because actual new releases are drying up, so they're trying to pad out the lineup.

More likely they hired more people to handle it (some of the VC stuff seems to have some pretty good returns for what is effectively a ROM dump), since its a separate entity that handles these emulation wrappers, iirc.

I'm having a bit of fun with the levels having never played them before. Anyone else new to the game might do well to remember that the levels are numbered, but they don't rise in difficulty according to number. If you just play them front to back, you'll be shocked at how inconsistent the difficulty is.

Fascinating that this boots the Gameboy Player logo.

Does that mean anything?

Not really. Every GBA game compatible with the Game Boy Player does this (Superstar Saga and Pokemon Pinball are two others I have) but all that did for those games was add rumble when playing on a GameCube. The Wii U Virtual Console games don't rumble, but I suppose they theoretically could.

Regular games like, say, Zero Mission just use the regular GBA bootup screen.

What did/does GBA Player compatible mean?

The Game Boy Player was an adapter that allowed you to play GBA, GB, and GBC games on the Gamecube (I assume you already knew this). Certain GBA titles had added functionality (such as rumble) when you played them on this device.

And some just didn't work at all!

Like those GBA Video carts they made for awhile that nobody bought.
