Pokémon GO is now the biggest mobile game in U.S. history (by peak DAU)

It definitely feels like the biggest gaming related event in my lifetime.

There probably won't be anything like this again for some time. It's a craze like the Wii was. Winter is what's going to kill it. If we're still getting those in the US

For now rhough it's a pokenomenon. Sorry had to say that.

It's winter in Australia. We're playing the game more than anyone.

It was not dormant though, this is just the equivalent of Elder Kai unlocking Gohan's full potential

And then it turns out that Pokemon actually has even more potential [released worldwide, heavy advertising]

Here's hoping it turns out okay and not like Gohan.

Wow, I wonder what'll happen if Nintendo makes Amiibo of the 150 Pokemon which gives you the corresponding Pokemon by tapping your phone.

I can confirm this, Lucky for me I didn't have work today friends and I were out in the big apple hunting Pokémon until 3:30AM and I gained 6 levels and a bunch of new Pokémon and we weren't the only ones

yeah, winter in much of North America is just a little bit different.

i find it sort of hilarious that Nintendo fans have now ensured that Nintendo's future will definitely be on phones. they cannot ignore this level of success.

Doubtful. They've already committed to numerous mobile games from their core franchises. It's not like this is something that came out of left field. And as was already stated, this isn't a simple 1:1 translation of one of their IP, which is what people were mostly against. No one has even said "There's no point putting Nintendo games on mobile". It's always been "I'd rather them not forgo their traditional handheld title to release only on mobile"

Yup.
Pokemon go is what they should be doing on mobile and they should be doing MORE.

Why doesn't Pokemon go login with Nintendo ID and integrate with my Nintendo and miiverse?

Why isn't there a miiverse app?

Why isn't there a splatoon companion app that includes current maps, the mini games, etc?

Throwing their games on mobile is silly. Using mobile correctly is not

I'd buy 100 Vaporeons and give them to everyone I know, and I'd keep another 100 for myself. For my wallet's sake, I hope this doesn't happen.

I'd be curious to know if sites like serebii.net are seeing a spike in traffic. (Joe, the webmaster, posts here, so maybe he can tell us.)

I have to imagine there are people out there who are looking up the list of Pokemon online to know what they have left to catch in Go.

They, in turn, may become interested in actual Pokemon games when they see all of the stuff offered in the other games.

I know most people don't want to go that deep, but there'll always be some who may, and that could benefit the main games.

Agree - never seen so much exposure. It's everywhere from social media to the newspapers and even TV news... And it's not even released in my country (Belgium)

I've seen unverified news sources mention "a spike in sales for pokemon games" but nothing trustable. It's the kind of news that might come from a Nintendo shareholders meeting though.

Every time I think Nintendo is fucked they come out with something I never thought of.

Like this never once even crossed my mind. In any way.

Edit:Hulu had pokemon on their front page.

It's insanity, I thought my office is pretty immune to videogames... 3 colleagues just came over to me yesterday to ask me about Pokemon GO, since it's known that I'm apparently the only one there that play videogame at all.

That's must have been a weird yet nice experience ^^

I just can't get over how brilliant this is. I don't use the word "brilliant" lightly but this deserves it. It's absolutely remarkable. It's getting people who sit inside all day (and everyone else) out to the parks and such, and bringing them together like nothing else could have. This game will end up literally changing peoples lives because of the huge social aspect. It's really a beautiful thing.

It also really irritates me to see so many people on social media bashing it and the people that play it. What a shitty thing to do when so many people are getting so much joy from it.

They don't need to. They're getting free press everywhere, even in countries where it's not even released yet or has a release date.

At this point, I'd only advertise if they're going to have a chance at Mewtwo or Mew and when Gen 2 Pokemon are released.

Even the Go Plus...thing probably doesn't need advertising at the moment. This game IS "EVERYWHERE." No hyperbole, full stop.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
The scary thing...I don't think they've put any money into advertising for it yet.

Yesterday, I checked the US App Store...it wasn't even featured in the scrollable banner including main recent releases.

Not surpised. It's everywhere.

My work place has 4 gyms and several stops. Lures go off all the time at lunch. The gyms are constantly rotating colors.

Met several people at the lures.

Drove home and saw people around a lured stop at a church.

Went to get some Wendy's and saw people by a lure at a grocery store.

Several Pokemon were in the Wendy's parking lot. Caught them before ordering.

Went to 7-11 late at night and caught several in their lot and the guy at the counter started talking to me about it and all the people who stream through catching stuff.

It's everywhere

Well I can't speak for him/her but I'm 30 and this is by far the biggest and widest ranging hype I've seen for anything videogaming related since Wii. Cretainly for software, this is off the charts.

The whole industry's future will be on phones/portable devices. Dedicated home consoles will still be around for a little while yet, but the writing is on the wall. If anything this will just push Nintendo towards the inevitable a bit quicker than they would have ordinarily.

Not only that, but it's also giving a positive boost to local economies, e.g. Cafes, restaurants etc. where people are buying things whilst out and about catching Pokaymons.

If this app stays relevant for more than a few months, who's to say just how much of a social and cultural impact it will have had?

This may have already been posted, but according to the WSJ:

Adding all that up, the stock market has judged that Nintendo today is worth about $12 billion more than it was a week ago.

Hoooooooooooly shit.

To those who say strangers talk to each other, does this depend on location? Currently in the midwest of the US and nothing has changed. People wont really talk to eachother while playing the game.

It's kind of amazing how we were all super sceptical of it's potential.

And then it just set the Play and Apple Store ablaze.

I wonder if Pokemon's new found popularity will do anything for Sun and Moon.

God bless Iwata.
This is beautiful.

And its probably true because I have seen similar things personaly with he app, and still hasnt released here.

People here are afraid (becuase theres two things you can be doing, wrtting in whats app, that would be the most common thing here as the game hasnt release yet, or pokemon go), but when someone breaks the ice (do it yourself it you know they are playing but you can see they are not going to start a conversation), and inmediately they will open to you and have a nice talk with them.
This has happen to me 100% of the times I decided to broke the ice.

Sure they can't ignore it, but they can't count on being able to replicate it either. Remember how well it went when they tried to replicate the success of the Wii? Phone games are far from a guaranteed money printer.

I'm also in the Midwest. Someone's just gotta make the first move.

I think people are still worried about sounding weird if they walk up to someone and say "are you playing Pokemon"? cause then you might look like a weirdo if they aren't.

If they couldbringMario Kart somehowto mobiles.... Justimagine kotaku article.

Ireally think MK could surpass this..

ah ah I like the "Winter is coming" argument :D
PokeGO is in the Throne of Games.
In winter people are going to buy incense like crazy, that's Niantic master plan... In winter you can catch Pokemon at home, but you have to spend real money, is going to be fun to watch.

My friends and I have been going on Pokemon hunts driving around everywhere. We found this huge hotspot with at least 100 people hanging out and playing. I never thought a girl would say "there's a Tentacruel back there!" to me in my life. Absolutely amazing.

Now we just need to find some way to make all of these people want Zelda: Breath of the Wild and then I'll be in my element. I really do hope this success can transfer over to their other properties for them.
