China warns North Korea: You’re on your own if you go after the United States

BEIJING — China won’t come to North Korea’s help if it launches missiles threatening U.S. soil and there is retaliation, a state-owned newspaper warned Friday, but it would intervene if Washington strikes first.

The Global Times newspaper is not an official mouthpiece of the Communist Party, but in this case its editorial probably does reflect government policy, experts said.

“China should also make clear that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the U.S. retaliates, China will stay neutral,” it added. “If the U.S. and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so.”

I didn't see any topic or discussion on this, so hopefully this isn't old.

Yeah as always, China doesnt want to deal with the fallout from any war. So they'll pull the leash and basically threaten the Kim regime with certain death.

And it'll work. As always.

We are on a fast track toward.... nothing happening. Status quo as usual, despite Trump, NK nukes, etc.

So China would stay neutral if NK attacks first, would throw hands if US attacks first? That's some bullshit.

Another nation with nuclear weapons then, and one of the shittiest options for nations on Earth to obtain them this time.

Hurray.

I just don't get how this is somehow so hard

USA: "We hereby give you notice that for each one of missiles that drop into our territory, ten missiles of ours will drop in Pyongyang,"
DPRK: "..."

Problem?

China ain't friends with us, why would they help us? We wouldn't team up with Germany if they declared a war of aggression on Russia.

That has pretty much been China's NK policy for forever. As long as NK stays as a non-threatening buffer on the peninsula, they'll keep the status quo.

That changes when NK does something stupid.

Read closer. They're saying they'll take up arms with NK against the US and SK if those two nations attack first.

I would expect them to stay neutral in both cases.

They might not like Kim's BS but they love the buffer they have with SK and the labor and materials NK gives them.

Yeah, China and NK are allies. It makes sense they'd defend them.

what is your plan here, you want the thread to end? shit is alarming; the degree is up to the reader
Guess we should ramp up a fool's sense of panic... so we can have a fun thread?

It's a loss for China regardless of the outcome.

They do not want a reunite Korea friendly to the US.

They do not want to take care of 25 million people stuck in the 50s when they can't even take care of their own country.

Keeping the status quo is in their best interest.

And more importantly, they wouldn't remain neutral. They would be the first ones in if NKorea did anything stupid. This is more for posturing, ideally preventing the US from doing anything. The reality is, no one is going to back NK but China. And they would go in there to prop up another government friendly to China, not the US or SKorea

Seoul being turned into pink dust

"We hereby give you further notice, that for each of your retaliatory missiles hitting Seoul, fifty of ours will drop to Kaesong, Pyongyang and Chongjin"

Jesus Christ, this is USA, not some third world state with three missiles. What good is all that arsenal, if it is no threat?

China is basically showing its hand to ensure that no one does anything stupid. A good thing too, considering no one knew if China would come to North Korea's aid if the US retaliated.

edit: On the other hand, this may be a bad thing if North Korea goes ahead with the launch.

That has consistently been Beijing's policy from forever ago. They don't want any war in the Korean Peninsula, so they're going to deter it with words as much as possible.

This should calm down Kim and his government. The Worker's Party of Korea would rather be in charge of a country of 25 million than a smoldering crater. If their advocacy for the well-being of Koreans is in any way authentic, North Korea's leaders will heed this Chinese advice.

Why do you think they haven't attacked anyone?

So basically china doesn't care unless they try to get rid of crazy kim jong and communism in nk.

It's good they're reinforcing this. Won't stop NK nuke development for sure but should push the Doomsday Clock a few minutes back.

If China really gave a shit they'd cut the only trade that is fueling NK's nuclear programme (and the regime effectively) which is occurring over their border.

if you think it's nonsense then click away; I do it 20x a day. seriously. you're not white knighting any sense of decorum or posture or anything. people want to talk about it. c'mon man I know you know this.

at the very least offer something about why you feel that it is a nothing burger rather than an everything bagel.

If North Korea is so garbage with their missiles, one of them "accidentally" hitting Japan or Guam in their monthly "let's attack the water" displays doesn't seem impossible.

Letting NK have nuclear weapons then living on the assumption that "absolutely no one in Asia will every attack anyone, ever" seems like an awful way to move forward.

They don't want a US base on their border if they can help it, so yea they'd sit it out if they can. This is also China's way of publicly telling Un to knock that crazy shit off.

If China really gave a shit they'd cut the only trade that is fueling NK's nuclear programme (and the regime effectively) which is occurring over their border.

They want NK to exist as it keeps space between them and US military bases, they just want them to shut up and act as a wall is all.

Every singnle person involved here is just making credible threats to deter war anyway. Kim with his "Guam". Trump with his "fire and fury".

This is bearing teeth as a method to get everyone else to back down.

Youve gotta love the little people panicking and news cycling over this stuff. They're the only ones who take it seriously.

They have been pretty consistent with this message and that is a good thing. China doesn't want a war there because of the humanitarian disaster spreading over their border and having the US even closer. The US shouldn't want war and strike first anyway.

Yeah those "little people" who actually are concerned about nuclear proliferation, especially with people like Trump and Kim Jong Un in power, lmao idiots!!

So basically, no one's going to attack anyone.

was there any doubt?

Nk is not gonna attack the united states despite of their apparent bravado..the people in power there live a pretty good life and would love to keep it going as much as possible..feign power is part of the plan, nuclear war is not.

th US will not attack first, because even if trump has probably a big erection at this moment thinking about a war with his name on it, the US usually try at least to have an excuse to invade and declare war..or if they don't they fabricate one.

China just wants to keep being China..they are not risking their neck over NK of all places.

So China would stay neutral if NK attacks first, would throw hands if US attacks first? That's some bullshit.

It's not in China's interest to have American military bases in North Korea. China want to have hegemony over the eastern hemisphere or at the very least in the seas surrounding china.

Hey genius. "We're on a fast track to nothing happening" doesn't mean there's nothing to talk about, it means that with China making these gestures, it's cemented that's nothing's going to happen.

You can talk about how nothing's going to happen for 20 pages if you want.

Imagine if the U.S attacked first and overthrew the regime and ultimately unified Korea. South Korea would hypothetical govern the unified Korea and they are a huge ally to the United States. So now you have a much stronger and bigger nation right along the Chinese border. The U.S could build more military bases etc and you get my drift.....That is obviously against China's interest.
