EGX (Eurogamer Expo) 2016 - Longer Queues Than Disneyworld

Returning to the THE NEC, BIRMINGHAM 22-25th September

Mikeside ran a successful Whatsapp group last year, so I'll do the same again this year: If you're coming to EGX and you want to be in contact with other gaffers for meetups etc, PM me your number and I'll add you to the EGX 2016 GAF Whatsapp group.

So we all enjoyed the queue-fest that was last year. So they have promised this year you won't be waiting 3 hours to play the next piss weak game out of DICE/EA hurray! This is going to be a quick and dirty thread this year so people can discuss plans, I know a few of us always end up meeting up and I'm going to be there till Saturday this year so I'll try to organise food in our usual haunt Wagamammas as I know there is one in the centre of the Bull Ring.

"So what's on?"

Games!

VR was a big thing last year so expect more of that, definitely from Playstation with their launch of VR next month. Besides that a lot more big titles with many sequels people have been looking forward to such as Titanfall, Battlefield and Dawn of War. Some titles I would recommend checking out include: Planet Coaster and Yooka-Laylee. Two very old British developers returning to genres that made them famous. There is a longer list of titles, which will be expanded upon this month over here.

Board Games!

Again more board games which I recommend as I've recently fell down that rabbit hole myself and EGX was a good entry way in to that money sucking, hate generating, shit hole. Great fun. The guys from Esdevium Games will be there to help explain the obtuse rules that make Dota 2 look like Hearthstone. If they have it there play: Arcadia Quest. Great way to ruin friendships. *thumbsup*

Some Shouty Cunts From Youtube! ESports!

...

Dev Sessions

Some actual quality Sessions this year, this doesn't seem to be a complete list but what is here so far is rather good. I've highlighted my recommendations.

Thursday 22nd September
3pm: Jalopy.
4pm: Dishonored 2.

Friday 23rd September
12pm: Endless Space 2.
1pm: Lazarus
3pm: Starbound.
4pm: SEGA Strategy Gaming Panel.
5pm: In Space, No One Can Hear You Score: 65daysofstatic and their infinite soundtrack of No Man’s Sky.

Saturday 24th September
2pm: Planet Coaster.
3pm: Sniper Elite 4
4pm: Failbetter

Sunday 25th September
2pm: Torment: Tides of Numenera
3pm: Battlezone.
4pm: Yooka-Laylee.

Actual Nightlife!

If anyone went last year they will know as soon as EGX is over the NEC area is desolate. Not any more apparently! There is a new Resorts World opened up promising food, movies and casinos. I'd suggest leaving for the town center myself. It's easy to get to, everywhere is Northern cheap and there is more choice.

I'm down for the Y and L presentation, I really want to play that game. I really hope no one berates 65dayofstatic for the current situation with NMS, their soundtrack made NMS (I thought it was one of the redeeming qualities in NMS) and I would like to hear their other projects in the future.

I went to EGX last year. I queued 90 minutes for Mirror's Edge Catalyst. There was a ridiculous queue for Star Wars Battlefront, and demos for PSVR and other VR games were available by advanced appointment only.

I only realised this was on yesterday and managed to get 2x Friday tickets. I'll be going with my younger brother so won't be able to meet up with anyone on the lash that night, but looking forward to the day itself.

And, with it being a weekday, hopefully the queues won't be as bad as Saturday or Sunday. ...heh.

Last time I went was about 6 years ago (perhaps? I played a preview of Rayman Origins), and was lucky to be working in games retail at the time so had some line-skip hooks with company reps.

I already went to the past Yooka-Laylee presentation but defo want to check out the Dishonored 2 panel!

I'm going for all the days. My friend couldn't make it this year, so I'll be all alone lol.

BTW I'd highly recommend the EGX app. It's very organised and helped me a bit for the last conventions to keep track of what I've played and have yet to.

After last year I am going to follow the example of the wise man in front of me in a queue, take a camping chair/stool.

Going for the full weekend. Me and my mates have been going for the past 5 years.
Since we started some of us have moved away so it's great to meet up and catch up.

The queues last year were bad but got plenty of use out of my Vita and 3DS.I remember Battlefront and Mirrors Edge taking forever.

They're not as bad on the weekday, but still bloody long.

Have went 4 years in a row since 2012. After last year's shambles though I'm skipping.
The queues were out of control (Division and Mirror's Edge were particular highlights, why the f*ck did they bring so few units??), and the VR setup especially was a mess

Here's hoping this time around the organisation is better, and I may then return.

Going on the Friday, hoping there will be a good number of PSVR games to try, as I'm really wanting to try it out before October.

Eurogamer Expo sucks now. The queues are too long and you don't get free swag like you used to.

Last time I went to the Eurogamer Expo. I went over to the retro section and played Goldeneye 007 and Smash Bros Melee all day with some random people.

I had a great time but yeah, no interest in going again. The whole thing got too big for it's own good.

They still can't get the queues down even though the event has moved to Birmingham? I gave up on EGX as it's far too corporate with no ear to the gaming community. It makes me wish PAX expands to England at some point.

Eh, with Indie Megabooth, Leftfield Experience, publishers of indie/AA games, and other smaller titles, I don't think EGX has gotten too corporate. There are plenty of non-AAA games to check out.

I'd say a lot of people turn their nose at EGX because it doesn't have enough AAA games and big budget affairs like PAX or Gamescom.

I enjoyed the show last year but the queues for most things were really awful - hopefully things will be a little better this year.

The Nintendo stand was quite good last year and quiet but I'm not sure what sort of presence (if any) they're going to have this year?

I know this is cheeky but does anyone have a spare Saturday Ticket that they can part with for a decent price?

Pleaaaassseeeeee. I am going with a few people, but someone who couldn't come before now can make it and really want to find him a ticket.

Upon hearing there's a spoons there, I've decided to get the train as opposed to driving.

Here comes VR after a beer and a burger!

Down with some colleagues on Saturday. As per last year the panels I'm interested in are all on the days I can't go \o/

I purchased a walkstool last year and sat quite smugly streetpassing on my 3DS while others stood around me waiting in those awful queue's.

Had to think long and hard this year if I wanted to go through it all again. The Cycle Show is on next door and it always looks mighty tempting!

More tempting than the prices in the NEC Wetherspoons!

we northerners have got Play Expo, Eurogamer's the midlanders event :-(

Play Expo was terrible when I went 2 or 3 years ago. It felt like someone just set up some market stalls and arcade machines in some town hall.

At least I got to wait in line for 3 hours to play 10 mins of Oculus though.

I take it as a no then?
Really want to get another ticket
:(
Actually, I'd be willing to part with my sat ticket - there's probably not enough there to keep me for 3 days

Early entry. Is the £25 ok? Full disclosure: I only paid £11 with Virgin Media discount

Drop me a PM if you want it

I'm ready to ....

Die of alcohol poisoning
Play some games
Beat the reps at their board games
Spend time socialising in the NEC

I'm...I'm ready to queue.

I'm going alone this year so bumping into GAFers would be swell! I'll be there all 4 days. Staying at the Prem Inn hotel nearby.

The dev sessions seem worse to me this year but oh well. Looking forward to this year. Going on Saturday and Sunday this year again. First day I'll be all over. Second day. I'll spend some time watching the cosplay stuff. Spent a bit of time there last year on Sunday and it was fun to watch.

Have fun everyone else who is going.

Edit: if you know me from previous years or from somewhere else and you see me, feel free to say hi. :)

I'll see you at the weekend Stuart!

Yeah, dev sessions are absolutely garbage this year. I booked a PSVR session for 1.30pm on the Friday.

I travel down tomorrow morning, wasn't spending more money to go down today.

I'll be there Friday morning but have to head back Saturday eve for work. I'll be roaming around on my todd on Friday night in the centre tho so a few drinks would be brilliant.

I'm staying at the prem Inn nearby but if people go out for drinks I'm game.

By the way if anyone wants to track me down my 'legendary' tshirt will be worn one day. Printed it in 2013 and have worn it one day at EGX since. Was going to do a GAF one for this year but I'm too skint to be wasting money getting tshirts printed haha.

Or you could just follow my Twitter to track me down.

.

Ace that'd be grand. I'm staying at a hotel near New Street I think. Should probably find that out. My phone's internet is wonky as fuck so will probably have to sort something out beforehand.

Also it does make me laugh when people describe B'ham as north. xD

I'll be there thursday & friday with a small group of friends :)

the company I work for has a game there (I've not been working on it) My colleagues would love for you guys to give them your impressions though!

No idea what that was but it looked cool.

To be honest I feel that if the queues are bad this year I may actually spend more time at indie and smaller stands rafter than the bigger AAA crowd.

Plus this is my first time at one of these so I'll likely be overwhelmed anyway.
