Vehicle plows into counter protesters in Charlottesville

What still pisses me off about this so much (other than the pure hate leading to a tragic death), is that I live in a state (CA) that has many conservative republicans who are willing to flatly ignore this crap and still vote R. They try to tune out almost any negative news about the party associated with racial stuff like this, so that they don't feel the immoral sting of aligning themselves with racists.

Make no mistake, republicans who continue to vote republican without confronting this faction of their party are enabling this behavior. They refuse to believe racism is real, and our fucking country is deeply rooted in it.

Its always been there.

Cameras everywhere these days just make it easier to highlight.

Yep. Its like minorities have been saying this shit for how long, but of course the burden of proof is on us, so with bodycams and technology shining a light on this shit, now everyone gets to see how shit really is for the downtrodden in America.

Same shit happened after Trump won. Remember economic anxiety? Of course minorities tried to tell y'all about the outright racism, but it only takes things like this for us to be believed.

I'm happy that there was a lot of show of support out there from counter-protesters/reasonable people, but there are just as many racists out there celebrating shit from today. And I wouldn't be surprised if this murderer sadly ends up being celebrated in some circles.

The problem is, they still won't believe it because they tune this crap out (see my post above). A few months before the election I tried to share some videos/articles of some truly ignorant stuff going on at Trump rallies and asking a pretty open-minded co-worker (whose family is staunch conservative) how she could even consider voting alongside people like that. Her response was something to the effect of, "i'll have to look into it more, but it's hard to trust the media because they're so biased."

I mean, it wasn't a complex story. One of the videos was the old white guy elbowing the black protester being escorted out of the rally. What else do you really have to "look into"? The reality is she just put it out of her mind, so she wouldn't feel guilty about pulling the R lever in the election.

Right. Had a couple of dumbass people post. Don't block the streets if you don't want to get run over on social media. Deleted after that shit.

Dont know if this was posted, but david duke is upset trump said something against the rally (which he didnt really) disgusting

Former KKK leader David Duke strikes out at Trump for condemning a white nationalist rally: 'It was White Americans who put you in the presidency'

https://www.google.com.br/amp/s/amp...p-for-condemning-charlottesville-rally-2017-8

The best part about the David Duke stuff is that every time he speaks publicly, he destroys a GOP talking point. The GOP want to distance themselves by claiming that white resentment and racism didn't fuel Trump's rise, and then David Duke comes out and basically says that Trump won because he motivated white supremacist voters (Duke just calls them "white" voters, but a former grand wizard of the KKK says that, I think we can all read between the lines).

This is BS.

There was literally a popular [Bud Light?] commercial recently that implied exactly what this graphic is mocking. It was showing how people with "opposite" viewpoints should be able to find common ground. It showed a gay person meeting a person who thought that gay people should be denied certain civil rights. Or something to that effect.

Where is the middle of that spectrum?

the middle of that spectrum is being pro-equality. That is not an extreme position. An extreme position would be that sniper who shot those cops.

It's crudely reductionist.
The approach of moderates continues to suggest that both sides are bringing equally valid arguments to the table.

There is nothing about this rally, about this movement, about any of the garbage that Trump or any of his cronies have championed that can be labeled as valid.

Wait, just 2nd degree?

@Tom_Winter

NBC News: James Alex Fields Jr., age 20, has been charged with second degree murder in connection with the car ramming in Charlottesvile.

Okay, then you clearly don't understand. The "pro equality" side is clearly to the left (politically, but to the right when viewing the pic) of the "moderate" in the picture. The "pro equality" side is the one saying "yeah, Black people should have civil rights." What don't you understand about that?

The fact that you brought up an extreme position while we're discussing moderate positions leads me to believe you're defensive about this subject somehow. Especially given the example you cited. This isn't reductionist, made up exaggerated rhetoric. People actually used these arguments at one point in time or another. Republicans are actively using these arguments in some context today (see: Republicans demanding Democrats "compromise" on their health care bill to allow them to strip 20MM+ people of health care).

No it is the exact argument moderates make when discussing white nationalist.
Anyone who suggests compromise with nazis is a piece of shit.

And breaking their back defending what shouldn't be defended

I think the disconnect here is the difference between people who call themselves moderates and people who are actually moderates.

Yes. But the picture is not fact. The picture is wrong. Any true moderate would be right where the pro-equality people are. Anyone who is not pro-equality is not a moderate. Pro-equality is a moderate position.
