Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls |OT| Monokuma and Co.

Just best the game. Really happy this game was made! People seemed to show disappointment it wasn't a visual novel, but I welcome that they tried to spread their wings and reach to a new genre. Happy it's a game that's pushing the Vita in ways games sadly rarely do recently too. Spike Chunsoft seem to be literally one of the only ones making exclusive (and especially this case intensive/expensive) vita games, so massive kudos to them for that.

Will have to go back in to A rank, scraps, hidden kids, buy skills and kill monokumas!

Questions for anyone who beat it...
1. So since the controller wasn't broken, is the world still adults vs kids? Or at least in tow city? Is it still in this state during/after danganronpa 2 also?

2. Did we ever find out who kept Kuroma locked in the apartment in the beginning and kept her fed/gave her a new uniform?

1. Presumably, yes. Some of the credits pictures and the post credit movie backs that up.

2. Yes. The Towa foundation were the ones keeping the hostages.

Yes, the conflict has not been resolved. That being said, both sides seem to be in a state or regrouping, so there likely aren't as many fights/riots going on.

As for whether it's the same way after 2, we don't know. There seems to be some indication that the conflict led the remnants of despair to the city where they were captured by Future Foundation, which would make it logical to conclude that if the conflict isn't completely over, has settled down significantly and possibly freed many of the children from the brainwashing. But again, we don't know, and Makoto did say the Tragedy isn't over yet in the 2 epilogue.

I feel like there needs to be an explanation for what happened after AE, but before 2 since there's still some pretty important stuff that's a big blank. Maybe we could get another novel or something.

Well, "that" moment late in Ch. 3 was......a thing.

......so WHY was everyone complaining about it? Did they not read the context behind it or something?

.......wait, WHAT was that line not long afterwards?!? "
By the way! This is the opposite of child porn, so it's A-OK to put in a video game! No problem!
" Yeah, holy crap, out of context, that line is just.....full of wut.

This game has an insane amount of AA playing on my PSTV on a 42" OLED and to be 100% honest this looks sharper than a lot of native 720p games. Does anyone know the res of the game?

The context behind
having the player participate in a crappy mini-game swatting cartoony hands attempting to sexually assault Komaru
? Not to mention multiple other reasons people could have a problem with it. It'd be kind of weird for someone to not get that.

The gameplay itself is rather lame (I used the touch screen), but I think the point was you were SUPPOSE to feel creeped/uncomfortable out considering the hints for Kotoko's backstory. It further hints at what the hell happened to her (hell, it's flat-out symbolism) and the crap she had to deal with which is how she turned out to be.

Now if you didn't "like" that moment in Ch. 3, I think that's fine, I'd argue
you WEREN'T suppose to like it because of the hints of the abuse Kotoko had to endure, so it's just a reminder of what she had to go through
, but saying it "ruins the entire game" or whatever is just blown out of proportions, and it feels like they miss the point. Not to mention, ya know, this is game about DESPAIR & MISERY. What, were people surprised that
they felt miserable or despair for the minigame when playing it?

Well, I'm sure I'll read lots of opinions of it in the Spoiler Thread once I finish the game.

Chapter 4. Just got the
Link
bullet. Can someone clue me in on how to properly use it?

I'm supposed to
control the Bomber Monokuma and get him to destroy the wall, but no matter how many bombs I chucked at the wall, it doesn't seem to get destroyed? Or am I supposed to blow up the Bomber Monokuma himself?

I won't elaborate on it then, but the thing is that it absolutely was not one of those video game segments which are "not fun, but poignant." It was neither, made all the more apparent by silliness that happens later on in the game. There are ways to execute things like that—maybe even by giving control to the player like it did—without it just feeling stupid.

Walk the bomber Monokuma up to the wall and kill him with Komaru.

You have to blow him up

Fair enough. I still have about half a game to cover, so maybe something later on in the game or reading opinions in this or the spoiler thread will change my opinion.

I will agree that the segment itself wasn't fun to play, but at least it was quick.

I get that the intent behind it was to make the player uncomfortable. But I feel like there are better ways they could have gotten that across than making a stupid minigame out of it.

It wasn't enough to make me write off the whole game, but I definitely would have preferred that scene not be there.

Was the chapter 3
Mickey Mouse glove minigame specifically
really what people were talking about with like the "chp 3 holy fuck" comments? Everything surrounding it was ten times more poignant.

Pretty sure it's the latter. The
mini-game is just dumb; I doubt people would go on about how it's so sentimental and emotionally resonant.

D'oh. Spent like some time trying to
get him to kill himself.

Urgh. Now I feel stupid. Thanks guys.

I spent about 4-6 minutes stuck on that part, too. Felt natural that
it would require you to control the enemy to break the obstacle and not control the enemy so that Komaru could break the obstacle. The solution was clever, though.

I will agree that I wish it was handled a bit better, mainly
not have it be that stupid minigame, but maybe Kotoko wants "the demon to experience what she had to go through with" or something. I don't know if I'd want to be the one partaking in the event, though. I'm sure they could get the message across without player input.

Oh absolutely. I guess I was just expecting a bit more after all the "OH GOD CHAPTER 3 WHAT THE HELL" posts, considering they actually did live up to the hype in DR1 & DR2, so it feels a bit blown out of water now that I've seen it for myself....despite being spoiled on it via Twitter.

Anyways, time to finish up Ch. 3.

Edit: OH GOD, this scene before the boss battle. Now THIS actually had an effect on me, just damn.

So I'm thinking I need to hack the monokuma to stand on the switch. Then turn on the projector to attract the bomber. Then use knock back on the ball for the kill
I've tried this three times without success. Am I missing something here?
Sorry for all the pics and spoiler tags lol

Go to the far left hand side (in front of the empty hole spots) and fire a Link shot at the normal Monokuma. Have him stand on the switch (have him face the wall so he doesn't see you).

Next, use the Move shot on the hologram machine. The Bomber Monokuma will see it when he eventually faces that direction and go and stand in front of it.

Finally, go over to the Roller Monokuma and use the Knockback shot on him towards the Bomber Monokuma that is now in front of the hologram machine. It will kill that Bomber Monokuma causing a chain reaction with the SWAT Monokuma killing every one.

Not sure why it isn't working for you. Make sure you shoot the Roller Monokuma directly to the bomber monokuma.

Ch. 3 finished. Wasn't expecting the direction it went in. It also felt rather short in comparison to the previous chapters.

Least I got a B this time, but it was because I retried 4 times (2 or 3 in one arcade challenges because THAT ONE DAMN SWAT MONOKUMA WOULDN'T GET NEAR THE SIREN ONE UUGGGHHH)

That one's a pain in the butt, but for chapter 4 at least you can fail one challenge and still get an A.

I want to say you're allowed....2 retries for an A-rank? I retried twice in the first chapter, but got everything else & got an A-rank. I would assume I got a B because I retried 4 times (I bet if I didn't die against the boss, I might've gotten an A instead).

man, the English dub in this is even better than the previous two games and those were stellar. Komaru and Toko/Jack's VAs in particular are fucking amazing. especially in some later scenes. they really put in a lot of work.

top notch localization as expected. currently in Chapter 4 and loving the story and game.

Just finished the game and loved every single minute of it! Need to go back to tidy up those A ranks and get all the other stuff.

I'm tempted to hook up my PSTV and see how the game is on that. I've put off even unpacking the system for so long at this point.

I agree, the dub was great. Komaru's voice in particular really impressed me (aside from her sounding slightly different in chapter 5)

ugh, this game is truly fucked up. they really go into dark places, don't they? darker than anything seen in the first two games. jebus

can I replay chapters individually and when can I do so? can I also change difficulty or am I stuck forever in the hardest one(which isn't really hard)?

Also holy shit this game is going places and I love it.

Thematically, this is quite possibly the darkest "mainstream" (as in rated by the ESRB and sold by retailers) game I've played. There hasn't been a game that gave me pause so many times since Corpse Party.

I think the effect is also amplified by the fact there wasn't such an active level of overwhelming cruelty in the previous 2 games, whereas it's the backdrop for this one.

I did play on the Vita TV. The problem is the way they handled aiming with the right analog stick. There's almost no sensitivity to it, making it very difficult to aim.

Ah, right. That. They hide the sensitivity adjustments behind skills you find later in the game. You can go both up and down and there are 2 skills for each direction that can be stacked.

I will agree that I wish it was handled a bit better, mainly

The reactions were more because it was more or less the low point of the game. It was incredibly dumb, that's it. I wouldn't say it ruined the overall game at all.

Easily the best chapter so far. Pacing was on point.

My perspective on the Kotogi stuff is that I actually, honestly think it was pretty deftly handled. It was almost as vague as the hints of the pasts of Masaru and Jataro, but it still wasn't blatant. They had some fun with it, but they didn't trivialize it.

I can see why the game is apparently uncut. It's an impressive balancing act they perform here.

Other than that, this is the chapter where my more general impressions of the characters start to come to a head, though I know there's still much I haven't seen.

Somebody was telling me they noticed the writing was a bit on the nose in spots, which I definitely agree with. At this pint though - as in the third DR game - I get the impression that the writing team isn't interested in minced words or sugar coated concepts or minutia. They don't want to chew your food for you.

I read a book about creative writing recently and the author said the most important advice he could give is to "just write honestly". I think Kodaka-san and Spike are living that to a T.

It's kind of meta, but Toko feels like a mouthpiece for this ideology fairly often. Although, it works because it feels like consistent growth for her character.

Toko is brutally honest and always so. To the point I t frustrates her to see others not be. She tells the truth about her emotions, her opinions, and her situation and surroundings. She's almost the inverse of Monaca.

Monaca wants to appear sweet and innocent, but of course she's violent and temperamental. She wants only to be placated (where Toko openly resents it), never to hear truth from the people around her. What really sells Toko as her opposite for me is the scene where Toko is in her cell and not only does she say she doesn't really want Komaru to die (as blatant as that was), she continues to worry about her and even Genocide Jsck wants to rescue her. This is all such a great follow up to her saying she'd kill Komaru at the start of the chapter!

Toko appears really cutting normally, but she actually is compassionate to some extent.

It feels to me like all the time and energy that would've been put into a dozen characters for a "regular" DR game has been refocused - laser-focused - into Komaru and Toko. It feels like every scene with them, even the optional ones, is actively working to further flesh out their relationship.

This is simply the best "buddy game" - a scenario featuring two protagonist virtually stuck together - that I've played in years. Quite possibly ever.

Spike has been amazingly successful in breaking from their own formula here, so far. I can't imagine where chapter 4 is going with the way 3 ended, but I'm looking forward to it.

In exchange for the lack of actual
character deaths
this game sure does make the children suffer in different ways. Not so sure about it being "darker" but it does handle really different subject matter from typical high school nonsense. Still not a massive fan of Toko/Jack but they're fun to have around and play as at least.

I need a little help getting an item in Chapter 4...

I just finished the fight against Genocide Jack and I'm supposed to head to the blue building to get to the subway, but first I'm gathering the rest if the items in the area.

According to the map on this page here...

There's supposed to be a Hit List item where it's marked "E". The problem is that there's a bunch of those Towa cars in the way and they can't be moved. I don't want to proceed to the next part of the chapter until I get it. (If I can get it now that is.) The cars were there too earlier when I was following Nagisa.

Anyone know how/when you get this item? Thanks.

You can move one of the cars (at least you can before the fight).

Finished chapter 3 on rank C. These monokuman challenges are getting easier to mess up. Could not loadscum my way here :(.

Enjoying the story so far. Gameplay is a bit stale. I do enjoy walking around finding stuff and doing the
riddle queen
challenges.

I do think going through the game again would be hassle, but I'll probably go for the platinum trophy like previous games.

Toko really works for this game. Way better than in DR1.

That's totally understandable. Again, I think I just got my expectations a bit up considering when people did the whole "HOLY CRAP CHAPTER # WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?" thing in DR1 & especially DR2, when I reached those points in said games, I wasn't disappointed. But here, I was just "....oh, that's it?".

But again, yes, I agree the gameplay section was easily the worst part. Not "Improved" Hangman's Gambit bad, but close...

Edit: Oh yeah, also wanted to mention: Oh Toko, you & your dirty jokes. They were funny in DR1, & they're still funny here, even if they're stupid (like the one near the end of Ch. 3). Hell, probably the first time I've ever seen/heard "that" word used in a game.
