It's the distinction between subject and execution. Plenty of people are afraid even of admitting to themselves they're interested in something because they don't want to be associated with poor execution of the activity on the part of someone else.
But I tend to go with Eddie Izzard - don't be a weirdo, be an executive weirdo. Really, with billions of people on this planet relatively little is "abnormal". Some things are just more common than other things.
I'm not surprised by anything fandoms do, because fandoms are made of people and people do anything.

EviLore whistles, and Mumei walks in with a chain. The chain is attached to a pregnant Benedict Cumberbatch. His hands are tied to his back, and he is wearing an old victorian gimp outfit made form lamb skin. Mumei kick Benedict Cumberbatch in the legs, and he falls down. He then starts cleaning the mod-juice. And no, he isnt provided with a scrub or wash-cloth. Just his tongue....
EviLore then claps his hands twice.
Besada enters, wearing a neon pink maid outfit, with the shortest skirt in existence.
Besada : "Yes my sire?"
EviLore: "Master needs feeding......"
Besada : "What would master desire today; the usual?"
EviLore "Yes"
Besada : "as you wish. "
Besada proceeds to drink a bottle of laxative.
Bish: " That will take a while...now what?"
EviLore: " Ready for round 2?"

Yep. I find i enjoy Supa even more when i don't know anything about the crazy side of its fandom.
In general i avoid fandoms. I don't participate in them and just look up whatever i want on its own.
Seen too many ppl in fandoms fighting over the stupidest shit (my otp is better than your otp, this famous fic sucks and you should feel bad for liking it cuz [insert list], etc)

There was always weird stuff but now it's leaking out. Maybe it is because Tumblr gets more attention than LJ did and our internet habits have changed. Websites are integrated more because of social networking.
Yeah, the only active community now is ONTD but I'm not that into Pop culture.

Oh sure, there was always weird stuff, but I remember a time when someone handing a fanfic to actor actually caused an incredible uproar throughout fandom on LJ, with people freaking out and reminding young fans that that was something we just didn't do, please please please don't do that.
Now we have people demanding Destiel be cannon and getting angry at actors because it's not. I don't know what changed. Maybe the older fans just didn't follow to tumblr and therefore weren't around to impart wisdom? ( I know it took me forever to leave lj for tumblr)

I think it may be the format of Tumblr. It's easy to ignore criticism when all you can do is like something. There is reblogging but don't you have to specifically look for who reblogged you? (I don't understand how it works very well >>) LJ's format was similar to a forum where you could directly respond to someone.
As you can probably tell, I still haven't left for Tumblr. I've tried but I like talking about characters. Tumblr doesn't seem like a good place for that.
Now I see why Tumblr exists.

And yeah, you are totally right. Tumblr isn't great for discussions at all. All I do is reblog shit that's funny. Sigh. People being able to comment on posts means more people would be doing something like 'Uh, what? No no no, don't do that.' That could be the key right there. It blows my mind that someone somewhere actually drew this. Someone took time out of their day, planned this picture, and drew it. They actually think this is fun to. I understand that people have different taste but why would someone take precious time out of their life that could go toward something else and drew this, with their hands!!!! My soul!!!!!
