3DS Homebrew Channel imminent (?)

I'm really glad that there's a good chance I can start importing in the near future without having to buy a separate system. As someone who's been learning Japanese for the past two years, region free is a very convenient feature to me. I'm crossing my fingers that Nintendo will get rid of it in the 3DS's successor because I'm really not interested in waiting for a hack just so a system I purchase can play everything in its own library again.

Region free systems are a blessing.

Sony did a nice thing, but unfortunately they fucked up the european market with it.

Nintendo is doing it also wrong.

I hope nintendo will let us do homebrewing with genuine copies of original games. Iam ONLY interested region free, nearly nothing else, but i will welcome the rest which will follow.

The Vita's region free sounded so amazing until Sony did that firmware update that forces you have buy multiple memory cards if you want multiple region accounts. I'm still not sure what the hell they were thinking with that.

I just hope this doesn't lead to online cheating and that people give Smash 3DS a try rather than shunning it and just wait for the Project M team to mod it.

I don't like the sound if this. I hope the guy's right and there's no way for this to lead to piracy but I'm skeptical.

I'd believe him, but that's only in regard to this exploit that's enabling the homebrew menu itself. People will obviously try to find kernel exploits (which could be used for piracy and hacking and whatnot) using this as a starting point, but again that's something that'll happen in any situation.

Although I'm wondering myself if it'll somehow make it possible for piracy on 4.5 or below systems, since there's apparently already a kernel exploit there that's used by Gateway and other 3DS flashcart makers. I mean, it's already possible because of the flashcarts, but making it possible without the flashcarts would at least mostly stop people from profiting off of the piracy. Which in turn will make it less appealing for newer exploits to be researched by people doing it to profit, since people could probably use the exploit without buying anything off of them.

but the truly important thing we need is something that'll let us get more than 10 play coins a day without changing the date on the system

We don't even have texture hacks yet. It'll be years after we get that that we'd get Project M 2.0 or anything. So I wouldn't worry, at all, about that.

HELL YES.

Does it require a 3DS flash cart to work? I'd definitely be interested in region free and emulation but not if I have to sacrifice all online functionality to use it. Region locking handhelds is so damn boneheaded.

Dont get your hopes up for any miracles people

This stuff is super cool but very limited and will likely remain as such.

can someone explain how this enables region free but not piracy? Usermode only shouldn't provide region free.

Because there's a literal flag in the 3DS memory that controls whether games from different regions are allowed or not. The Gateway 3DS flash card can disable that flag. Of course, it only works for physical games, since accessing another region's eShop would probably be a lot more complicated.

It is unknown, however, if this will be possible with this hack, since it's supposed to be user-mode (aka: it's probably hijacking over a game, so it can only do things a game has access to do).

That flag shouldn't be able to be changed in usermode. I'm pretty sure this is going to open the door for piracy, even if it is indirectly. Unfortunate for Nintendo.

People keep saying this... but does anyone have a source on the 3DS keeping region settings blocked behind kernel? I mean, it would make sense to do so... but Nintendo hasn't exactly shown great sense in a lot of their security issues (using the same unencrypted security code for both the GCN and Wii's DVD drive for instance).

Smealum himself says that it should definitely be possible, and I doubt he would claim that if Region Locking was locked within Kernal settings.

Ideally, I'd like homebrew for the 3DS/Vita to take off right at the end of their lifespans or even after, so then the impact of piracy will hopefully be minimal.

Homebrewed PSP is a thing of beauty, so the thought of these handhelds getting similar capabilities is exciting...just don't want it to impact sales and development of games in the way it seemed to on the DS/PSP =/

I have no sympathy for Nintendo for whatever this hack leads to.

Region locking is a shitty, anti-consumer practice, and I'll be very happy if this can get rid of it.

"perfect" snes emulation of 4-5 games with who knows how much specialised code/hacks for each title. I've always maintained the position that the 3DS is somewhere around the threshold where SNES emulation should be possible, but by no means easy and far from perfect for every game.

Isn't that how Nintendo does their VC emulators too, though? That is, each VC game has its own specialised emulator to make it run well.

To some extent yes. But there's probably a limit to how much time they want to spend on each VC release, whereas Namco are probably willing to invest more in a retail collection. Same reason why M2 turned down doing a MegaDrive VC emulator for 3DS but does 3D classics instead as they can justify spending more time on each game for that.

Nice, I can't wait to check it out. I've already got a gateway which allows region free, but this may be something for my xl.

I think a whole lot more work went into Sega and M2's 3D classics work than Namco Bandai's J Legend Collection. That's a very weird comparison.

Besides which, each SFC game at 800 yen would be more profitable than a 4980 yem collection of 3 of them plus 7 FC games. The costs actually work against what you're implying here, retail collections tend to be cheaper efforts emulation wise while individual downloads are more customized and polished.

Well this sucks for people who like to play games online lol. Hopefully this doesn't lead toanyone discovering how to use it for piracy.

So what are PAL territories currently missing out on?

Going by Wikipedia here, purely retail-related stuff, and not including most of the shovelware:

Games Europe missed out on completely:
- Brain Age: Concentration Training (Devilish Brain Training)
- Centipede: Infestation
- Crosswords Plus
- Jaws: Ultimate Predator
- Mahjong Cub3d
- Mystery Case Files
- Rune Factory 4
- Unchained Blades

Retail games that only got an eShop release in Europe:
- Adventure Time: Hey Ice King!
- Alien Chaos 3D
- Code of Princess
- Conception II
- Crash City Mayhem
- Shin Megami Tensei IV

Only a matter of time until a Virtual Boy emulator is ported, and then Wario Land VB will be playable in all its glory.

Isn't 8.1.0 the newest version? :)
They said this a few days ago:
confirmed 100% working on 8.1.0-19E ! we're getting closer :)
The tweet before talked about backing up a NAND before updating so maybe it is a case of exploit needs old version to load but will persist in newer *shrugs*

That is the latest firmware released on 7th Aug.

If this makes my 3DS region-free, I'm selling my Black/Orange LL and getting mine modded to record my screen. I'll get a physical cart of Smash Bros. from Japan then.

Damn, didn't even think of this. But is the 3DS even powerful enough to emulate it? VB uses a 32 bit processor running at 20 MHz. It's a lot more powerful than the SNES, which some people seem to think the 3DS can't emulate fully.

Either way, there's a damn good VB emulator for the Wii, which you can play in 3D using cheap 3D glasses, if you have a pair.
