I am going to miss their retrospectives and their weekly podcasts. I really like the depth they gave; what a shame.

I feel so damn lost. I checked for their new videos/updates everyday.

This is so shitty. This is actually making my depression worse. Holy shit.

This makes me so mad and sad.
They rebuilt a new site from the ground up but were forced to use Defy’s player as video player on their site which was crap, so everyone watched their videos on youtube.
The crew had a meeting together about 2 weeks ago to plan out their year, Bloodworth went on vacation to get married and have his honeymoon barely a week ago.
Defy Media decided to terminate them, giving them notice of it merely a couple hours before Monday’s 6 pm stream when everyone is working hard on their videos for the week.
That was very unclassy of them and tears me to pieces to see this awesome crew go like that.

GameTrailers used to be a pillar for the video game industry, they had things that nowadays we take for granted like easy access to video game trailers and gameplay demos. Hell, they even had HD before youtube and live stream events broadcasted both on the web and on TV. After getting sold to Defy Media and losing a humongous amount of people in the process, the crew was spread to thin to keep doing big projects like Retrospectives, Pop Fiction and even Bonus Round.

But still, the last 9 warriors worked their butts off to release weekly videos and each one of them had an awesome chemistry together.
There won’t be any new GT Time, Huber Hype, Final Bosman, Don’s Design Labs or TableTop Adventure.
From Bosman being a “press conference connoisseur” to Huber tearing up at Shenmue 3, they were just a bunch of genuine weirdos that made me rejuvenate my love for video games, they are leaving a huge void on my weekly routine. They were almost like friends to me.
I sincerely hope the best to them.

Stay strong and show them your support.
There are people on the twitch.tv/gametrailers chat if you need to talk or come talk to us here.

Is there anyway we can start archiving the videos now that the site is shutting down? I would hate to lose such great original shows and not have a back up. Backtrack was my favorite show and now it seems like its gone. The Chrono Cross ep and Streets of Rage ep is not backed up anywhere. What can we do here?

Internet Archive didn't save the videos either.

I'm up for creating torrents in order to save it all, if Defy for some reason removes everything.
Would this be possible, or will it be some sort of sad copyright infringement?

I don't really know how to put this because I'm glad they're getting the respect they deserve.

But it's sort of frustrating to watch poeple in the other thread say "Such a shame, they're my go-to news site... I mean never watched their videos and I hadn't gone to their website since 2007 but they were the best" and then see people clamoring to adorn their avatars with the GT logo. Outside of this thread and some other pockets, I was used to seeing GT get bashed. Especially in their Top 10 threads.

I agree to certain degree that it's funny to see the adoration when in prior top ten threads people would claim they were casual or for them to hand in their gamer cards, but I also can see how for some there could have been perceived cliques like in many threads which may have kept some posters away who may not have posted as much or at all.
Overall like you I am happy to see the outpouring of support, even from a community which I previously thought the support wasn't as strong.

Also really enjoyed Damiani's stream last night going over his tenure at GT

The thing that bothers me most is that some people only seem to care about Kyle. I get that he's been the face of the 'new' GT, but it really bugs me how little people know about the rest.

Kind of weird how quickly it happened. Did no one know beforehand (besides defy media)?

Nope, sounds like Brandon heard about it in the middle of the day, and the rest of the team found out shortly later. If you're a Defy executive you don't just wake up one day and decide to shut down a site like GT, this would have been the plan for at least a few weeks, it's too bad they couldn't have had at least a week knowing it was their last, so we could have a final Final Bosman, one last Man Ups, Huber Hype, etc.
Hell, Defy could have given them a month heads up. That way they could have all found new jobs as soon as their time with GT was finished so no one would have been unemployed.

Usually employees are escorted out the minute they find out about the layoffs. We were lucky to get one last stream.

For individual positions, absolutely. But for an entire department shutdown, I don't think it's unreasonable to have a bit of a heads up if you wanted to be courteous to your employees and (in this situation) their audience.

Thinking back on Brandon's speech last got me a little choked up, saying his appreciation for his staff made me think we might never see them together again. I don't know if I will see a group as special again.
Unfortunately for me, gametrailers and gaf were my go to communities and I just lost half of it.

Corporate america is scary, if I'd be fired on the spot I'd have at least 2 weeks left working there if I wanted to here, vice versa though too would have to keep working for 2 weeks after quitting.

From the last stream it seemed like they were certainly open to trying the Patreon route

I imagine they also want to kind of wait and see what happens and if any offers/openings arise in the aftermath

Regardless, it's truly saddening to see it come to an end and I wish them all the best. If they decide to try some sort of crowdsourcing/funding I'll be there day one.

Thanks guys.

Sorry it took longer than usual, as I explained in the first comment, I actually lost my job as well a couple of days ago and was preoccupied with that, only to login yesterday to find this bit of news. So yeah..

Isn't Defy Media a privately owned company? Let me know if I'm wrong, but if that's true, that would explain the sudden change from a legal standpoint

Even private companies over here in the UK would have to go through so much consultation with every single employee when they shut down an area that it takes months. The fact they can just turn around one day and you're gone would be so damn scary.

same applies. If I were state employed though and running on an old contract I'd have to commit a serious crime to be laid off, old contracts are way too secure.

Personal top 5 GT moments of recent memory ;-;

1. E3 2015
2. MURDER!
3. ''I'm pretty sure that was the last spider.'' (hell, the entire RE3 stream is my favourite)
4. ''Does anybody have any quarters?''
5. Moon Wars

I know, I love stupid stuff only sites like GT can provide :(. Best streams in the biz.

My employer would owe me 6 months worth of salary if they fired me today. Don't know how I'd feel safe in USA. That's some whack system run by short-sighted assholes.

Woke up today and immediately got a notification about their stream as usual. At first I thought they were continuing that joke from ManUps, but then I saw the thread about GT closing... fuck...

Ah I see. This is pretty awful for them to just be kicked out like this. I'm sure they will all land on their feet soon though. I'm sure a couple of these guys are already getting calls (or at least considerations for a call)

In my country it's a minimum of 20 work days for both being fired and quitting. 45 days if you're in a management position.
And if they do a collective layoff you get to receive 3 or 4 compensation salaries when they let you go.

This is indeed very scary.

Good luck to you GT guys. You figure everything out,
you white guys.

On the Dumb Game Monday stream yesterday before their announcement Kyle asked Brandon, "How ya doin?" He replied, "I'm alright... I've had better Mondays."

Such a bummer.

Is there any way to put the highlights from twitch on youtube? So much stuff there that could possibly be lost. Huber's 13 hour Evil Within playthrough being top of the list.

Since there is quite a time difference between the States and Ireland i want online for the breaking news and also work was a killer this morning so i didnt get on my phone until at least lunch.

I have only been following GT for the past year, so i cant even begin to understand how long term followers are feeling, as well as the guys. But ever since following GT since the Shenmue streams last year, my daily life has been a bit better every day/every week with their tweets, site content, and video uploads. I am as much confused, angry and frustrated as anyone, and hope that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

What made GT great, was that no matter what you were read or watching, you felt it. The passion for gaming, the belief in their words, the fun and excitement of how amazing their job is/was. They invited you in, and made you feel like part of the family, and were a bright light in amongst all the other crap gaming media sites that currently exist. They genuinely acknowledged their followers opinions, interacting with everyone, including myself, on social media, and across the comments sections of their media output. Today, is a day when the hard reality hit home that nothing lasts forever and life isnt always fair. In the year where i not only discovered GT, but the game i have been waiting for for 14 years, Shenmue 3 was announced, the bad rears it ugly head to counteract the good. GT was part of my week, watching every show when it was uploaded, and Saturday afternoon became by GT time by watching the show with a cup of tea.

I dont know what has happened, and the legalities or reasons behind it all by Defy Media. Is it legal to lay someone off in that timeframe? Did they buy out the rights to the properities? Can GT continue under another investor? I dont know. All i know is i am selfishly sad because GT in its current form is now no more, and all of these great people have been completely shat on, in a real sense, concerning finances and making a living by giving of themselves for us.

Either way, i just want to say thank you, not for anything specific, but for making me feel part of something and igniting my interest in general gaming. I entered this generation and bought games due to the things GT mentioned and recommended. Today is one of those days, despite looking forward to attending MAGIC in Monaco in a couple of weeks to meet Yu Suzuki and see some new Shenmue news, that has be flat out bummed, and the world got a little less fun to live in right now.
I genuinely wish everyone well, and their talents speak for themselves so they will land on their feet. When one door closes, another opens and they will move onto bigger and better things. I just hope that they will all still work together, and if they do, no doubt, they will have a huge collection of fans that follow.

i am about to press play on the Twitch video of the last stream and no amount of preparation has done me any good. I am dreading the end. I can only close off by saying a huge thank you for everything Brandon, Huber, Matt, Brad, Kyle, Cassanova, Ben, Ian, Blood, Omar, Max and anyone i have left out. Hope to see you all again soon.

I woke up this morning and was still bummed out about the news. I selfishly still hope that they pull together a new site or a Patreon or something, but it would also be great if the GT crew was scooped up into some high paying industry jobs. Thanks again for everything, GT!

Thanks a lot for all your uploads, they've really helped me out. And I'm sorry to hear about your job, I'm sure you'll bounce back!

Just watched the final stream. God dammit. Kyle and Brad were so quiet throughout. Huber was his usual jolly self. Jones' choked up speech at the end almost brought me to tears. So sad.

I didn't know Omar went to Funhaus with Elyse. At least he's sorted.

Good luck to the rest of the crew. You all deserve it.
