One of my Levi's are starting to smell pretty bad. Hanging them outside or the freezer didn't help.

What are my options, beside the obvious?

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I know there are some conflicting opinions on this, but I've got a pair of raw denim jeans I've worn for probably a total of several months (off and on for a number of years), never washed, and I want to wash them. For maximum contrast in the fading how should I go about this? I read stuff about just washing them in a bathtub but is that really better than using a washing machine? And is it better to use hot water or warm water? Gentle spin or fast spin? Detergent? And I've heard of putting salt in the wash to increase the fading contrast?

Anyone?

Anyone have a suggestion for a (temporary) hemming solution for a new pair of jeans I just got today? Or do I just need to find a shop and have it done professionally? Currently 3 or 4 inches too long, so I could roll them but don't know if that would hurt them (whatever single rinse 11oz denim from Italy is)

Well, finally invested in a few pairs of good jeans. Two pairs of rag & bone, two pairs of Paige Denim. Really, really love the Paige Denim... Though I'll probably get both tailored, they're running a little long.

Jeans are frustrating.

People say you're not supposed to wash them, but they start to smell horrendous after a couple of weeks of no wash.

What am I supposed to do to clean the odor from the fabrics without washing them?

I have roommates so I don't have the option to freeze my pants...they would think I'm crazy and our freezer has too much food/not enough room.

But people say not to wash them?

I mean, if I could I'd just wash them every week to keep the odor away.

People are wrong. I've been in this business (former Self Edge employee) for several years, and jeans that are never washed rip faster than washed jeans. This doesn't mean you have to wash them every week, necessarily, but was them gently when they're dirty.

Just wash them in the bathtub with cold water and line dry. They'll be nice and crispy when they come out.

Do I have any hope of fades if I only wear a pair once every one-two week in non-athletic activities? Don't really like the feeling of walking around at home with jeans.

General consensus is just wash them when they get dirty or smelly. I don't ever really sweat from my legs and I don't do a lot of physical activity in them so it's generally a while before I wash mine. I like to throw in a little bit of dr bronners peppermint soap to have it smelling minty whenever I do.

Sure, it'll just take a super long time. Also, some jeans will fade faster than others.

I am not Max
1 more month till my PNS are a year old and i'm undecided on how to wash, or even whether to wash or not.

Seeing this makes me want to machine wash

I don't see why people don't want to wash their jeans, if you want your jeans to last you're best off giving them a wash every few months as it helps keep the fibres in the denim strong.

anyone in the US looking for repairs? been working on hems and repairs and need some more practice. Will do the repair/hem for free only thing i ask for is paid shipping to and from me.

hit me up on message if anyone is interested.

i have access to darning machine and can do single stitch hems (no access to chainstitch hemming machine.)

Despite being a (mostly) dead thread, reading this has been super valuable. I wanted to buy some good quality jeans, and no idea where to start, and this thread pointed me in the right direction.

I tried on some skinny Nudies, and they fit great. Very soft and very comfortable. However, they were AUD$240 which was a bit out of my range, especially as I was looking to ideally get multiple pairs.

I tried on some Levi 510s. I could totally tell the difference between them and the Nudies. The Levis felt much more like what I was used to from my jeans, while the Nudies felt like another league entirely. The 510s felt a bit stiff, but pretty sturdy, so I'm sure I'd get a decent life from them. I bought a pair as it was the last day of a sale, so I got them for AUD$85.

I figured I'd have a look around some more shops, even though I'd already bought my Levis, and I stumbled upon Neuw. The felt very nice, and some were reduced from AUD$170 to $110. I tried them on, and WOW. Much much closer to the quality I had experienced with the Nudies. I couldn't tell you which felt better, as I'd tried on the Nudies the day before, but they were definitely in the same league. The price was so good, and I found multiple colours I liked, so I bought 3 pairs at AUD$110. Really really happy with them. I think they're selvedge too, so that's a plus. I'm going to return the Levis now :)

Has anyone else tried Neuw before? I think they're a relatively new brand here in Australia. I'd like to hear if anyone has got any and how they're going. Are they long lasting?

I ended getting 3 pairs of Iggy Skinnys in Crisp Vintage, Right Now, and Pledge. They're a little long for me (I'm a 32/32), but I can cuff them and they look great. I might have the Pledge ones altered, as I plan to dress them up a bit and it might not look as good cuffed.

Looking to get into some good quality denim. I'm finding that I had almost no idea what jeans are supposed to fit like before, so I've got a bunch of jeans now that don't really fit my style. I've got some thighs, so skinny or slim don't really go well on me; I'm looking at straight.

What's the word on 7 For All Mankind? I don't see them mentioned in the OP, but they look to be in the price range I'm more or less comfortable with and good reviews, it seems.

Not a fan of them, quality and otherwise. What's your price point?

I ended up buying a $60 pair to try them out, and also a pair of Nudies at around the same price, both straight. I can return both easily since I bought from Amazon.

Honestly, I just want something good. If I have to spread my purchases out or sacrifice purchases in other areas of my life, I'm ready for that. Jeans are pretty important.

Ok well I'm thinking $200 or less tho

For around $200, your best bets are probably Sugar Canes, Skulls, APC, Nudies, Naked & Famous, 3sixteens. You can also check out Unbranded, they're under $100 and actually made by Naked & Famous.

If you want some raws and don't mind taking a bit of a gamble you can try a pair of Somet 003's or Momotaro 0201's from Denimio. My experience with them is good (relatively cheap, helpful, free shipping) but the shop is in Japan, so returning won't be too easy. You can find some good measurements on the blue in green site for these pairs though, so you should at least know if they're gonna fit or not.

What's my best best for American-made jeans?

And I mean actually made in the United States, not that AG, Citizens of Humanity, Current/Elliott, et al. bullshit of buying all the parts and fabric in third-world nations then assembling them here and labeling the jeans as "made in the USA."

Denim is typically foreign (Japan, is where you want it to be from)... but all fabric is patterned, cut, and assembled in the US.

I thought the majority of Rogue's stuff was made in Japan, too?

What about the origins of the buttons and zippers?

There denim comes from Japan, but it's my understanding the jeans are hand constructed in their LA workshop. As for buttons and zippers... i've got no idea.
Cool, thanks for the information.

This, plus I have seen incredible fading come out of jeans that have been washed as much as weekly or every other week.

It's true that you don't want to wash jeans any more than you need to, but the whole "don't wash your jeans ever" thing is just people taking that idea to the point of insanity. Once you get past a certain point of time between washes, the additional contrast benefits are slim to none, and no one should be that guy wearing the stank-ass pair of jeans, for the sake of their social life and the sake of the people around them.

Looks great, make sure to post up some fade pics!

I haven't been able to wear jeans as much since my dress code at work changed, but I'll post up how my new pbj's are fading after my vacation. Nice to see this thread is picking up a little steam again.

Update: got those 7FAM and Nudies in. Fit was not good for me; to give you an idea, I tried the Steady Eddie's and the rise wasn't working for my butt, it was tight at the thighs, and an inch too slim at the bottom. However, I learned from that, so I'm looking at jeans with shorter rises and a looser fit. I ordered 2 more pairs from 7FAM, one easy straight and the other relaxed. I'll get a good idea on the sizing from that, then probably keep one and order some more from somewhere like Denimio once I'm certain of the specs.

Appreciate the help so far guys.

Just remember that denim will stretch once it gets settled it. It changes a lot from brand to brand, you can probably find some info on specific ones on some forums.
