Mirror's Edge: Catalyst Closed Beta Thread | Didn't Get An Email? Keep Faith

So......I spent all night downloading this for PC and it won't even fucking boot on 362.00 drivers? It's demanding 364.51 or higher, which happens to be completely botched and unusable on my PC. Last time I tried to install them it broke Vsync and locked my computer up. So what now? Skip the game all together since EA locked it behind certain drivers?

Is it a rooftops only open world, or do you run around in the streets as well?
I believe it's rooftops only but the world map does have two separate levels, rooftops and underground.

And missions will definitely have their own massive rooms and facilities.

Thanks. Yeah, having tunnels and other underground stuff be a part of the open world makes sense.

no as much by far....

1. Have you played the main mission included in the beta? In the Kruger building? It could have been lifted straight out of ME1. It's so similar to the first game.

2. Of course the overall look won't be identical to the first game. You're being naive if you think it would be completely the same. They have to develop the style and make the world dynamic somehow.

Is it a rooftops only open world, or do you run around in the streets as well?

The lack of streets is literally my only disappointment with the game/beta

I don't think you'll really simulate being a Runner in the city unless at some point you'll be pegging it through crowds/plazas.

Baby steps, though. Baby steps.

The Bad:

Roll, Coil and Quick Turn should be from the get-go.

The motion blur is pretty horrible, it's on EVERYTHING. Even slow moving things.

Shame about the minimalist design. The vibes of the city are different.

Why did I fail a mission for not fighting guards?

EDIT: And yeah, the lack of street level design is disappointing. In the first game you had levels that felt way closer to the ground at least. Even a subway level!

The Good:

Seems like everything else is fine though! The combat is much better if you want to be fast.

Made screenshot of my performance on a 7970 just running around the city.

You can see the framerate fluctuating in the high 40s on ultra preset (first part of the graph) and then being a pretty solid 60 on medium preset.

Unfortunatley frametimes are a bit of a mess.

What sorta performance are people getting on the PC version? I'm getting really low FPS on anything higher than low and even then I'm getting severe drops 90% of the time.

i7 2600k, 8GB RAM and a GTX 970. Some comparisons:

I see a lot of folks complaining about this and I just don't think it's much of an issue. The abilities are locked in order not to overwhelm new players who are still adjusting to the inputs. I know because I am that player. I don't want to deal with quick turns until I'm consistently navigating basic wall jumps. It takes about an hour of play to do so, during which time the player will have earned enough unlocks to free the above-mentioned abilities.

I think at this point anyone with 8Gig of RAM reports bad performance. Check my post above my GPU is way slower but I got 16GB of RAM.

Any test that confirms the 16Gb of RAM are justified? I have 3Gb of VRAM, 8Gb of RAM, and still get a huge amount of popping and low quality textures that take a few seconds to load. I wonder if more RAM would help with this.

I was in the same boat, 364.51 ruined my system stability so I begrudgingly downloaded the newest one (ends in .72 or something) and that's been fine for me.

I have 16GB RAM and a 970 (so 3.5GB VRAM) and I still get texture popping and all kinds. Think the streaming just isn't optimised yet. I noticed if you peek round certain corners the entire world is culled until you step out fully.
Edit: also playing off an SSD

The texture pop in is just part of the beta I hope. It's super noticable when looking at stuff written on walls, it gets super jaggy as soon as you move away from it and once you get close you can see the more detailed version being applied.

Some of the transcripts of recordings are simply cut, as if the person writing them didn't even check if they were complete in-game.

I wish I could say Git Good, but this is a valid reason. At least the level design is not done around those movements (even though rolling is pretty important).

The game looks great. Native support for 21:9 resolution, including a fov slider, is a nice bonus.

The game was far from 60 fps locked at max settings in 2560*1080 resolution on my setup, though. Fps was all over the place, never under 30, but often between 35-45, and sometimes a bit better than that. It felt pretty good on my gsync during the action sequences in the tutorial, but you definitely notice the fluctuating frame rate.

Specs: 3570k@4.6, 16 Gb RAM, Titan X, Windows 7, installed on an ssd

This game has convinced me of the need for a PS4K.

I mean, I was hoping the game looked like the first trailer, but nope. I wonder if Dice will release a patch for improving the game on PS4K.

Have they removed the mechanic where you press a button to insta-change your direction when against a wall? It was used pretty frequently in the original game, including in the tutorial, if I am not mistaken.

It's R1 to do a 180° quick turn. You have to unlock it.

Wait for release before saying things like this

Come on, the build is a month old ALREADY and the game isn't out for another 7 weeks

That means by the time it releases it will have had 11 weeks more polish. That's a huge deal.

If you mean Quick Turn (press RB), it's in the Skilltree.

I played a little on the PS4 it it felt alright, didn't look too great. I just have to get used to the mechanics.

I only got the PC version installed this morning so I have to wait until later to play it but for the 5 minutes I played it looked a lot better. I saw that it was only 900 and 720p on the consoles. I'm glad I upgraded my card.

Running it on ultra and the textures look like shit, what's up with that? Looks really really bad for me. I know it's a beta but it comes out fairly soon. And what's with the text hopping around the screen, don't thousands of people have this, why not just put it in the corner if you want it on there so bad.

That aside, game seems pretty fun. Haven't finished all missions yet, but did a few and the fighting gets a bit better. Could use some work still, nothing feels like you have any big impact at all. I had to turn runner vision to classic because it made it way too easy.

I'm sure by release it will be fine but ATM performance is very uneven on PC. Couldn't maintain a locked 60 at 720p on my 970 due to stuttering, running off an SSD.

They're unfinished textures and the build is an old beta, it was probably a closed and small external beta like the leaks that gave us early Unity and Halo 5 footage - so they need a really irritating watermark to discourage people from trying to leak it.

I totally forgot about the delay to June. Yeah, they have more time to polish the game.

Yeah, I have a 970 as well, seemed alright but I was only in the first small area. I'm sure once I really start running around it'll show some issues. Hopefully it's the reason for the small delay. I've been waiting for this game for a long time. I want it to be great.

Ok, if it doesn't work well on that rig it's definitely the game's fault. I'm also playing off a 7200rpm HDD so it should work way better for you.

What I really miss so far is running inside more complex buildings, traversing through ventilation ducts, locked hallways and storage rooms. It's kinda hard to explain, but I feel the first game made you run through these compact areas that gave me a great sensation and feeling that these places were off limits for anyone exept the people doing maintenance or working there. Might just be me though.

I don't know how big the city really is, and how much of it we have access to in the beta but if the game don't move away from all the rooftop running it will grow old really quick.

Okay the first time trial has sold me on this. I'm still a few seconds off the leader but there are all kinds of alternative routes to use and I'm gradually finding ways to get closer to the WR (and I'll start making videos if I do reach it). While stuff like momentum works a bit differently (wallrun jumps seem to kill your speed a bit unlike the original where it's one of the fastest movements, but maybe I've overlooked something) I'm pleasantly surprised they haven't dumbed down mechanics like coil jumping, along with making the side-jump boost a proper mechanic.

Also people have criticised the tutorial but it's way better than the original's one, and actually teaches you the utility of the moves and merits of combining them rather than just "DO THIS OR FAIL".

I'm also getting awful performance on a 4670K, 280X and 8GB. I'm starting to believe it might be the RAM that is the culprit. Which is bullshit, obviously.

Even worse is that 180° turnaround is locked, which is a BASIC MECHANIC YOU USE IN THE FIRST LEVEL OF THE ORIGINAL GAME. I'm talking when you climb up a wall and then turn around and jump back off it to reach a higher place. That's locked. That's basic as fuck. I don't care how quickly you can unlock it, none of this shit should be locked behind anything.

This is just wrong

Wtf is Shift and how do I use it? What is the Focus bar/Focus Shift do exactly?

Only thing I can see it used for is dodging during fighting.

Not just you. I miss those vibes.

I suspect they'll be more of that in the full game.

The first real, non-tutorial story mission in the beta (the only one? I haven't quite beaten the beta yet so I'm not sure) has you infiltrating a research facility. No ventilation ducts but it's the same sort of idea.

I liked the tutorial. And yes, tackling the first time trial was when I really started enjoying the game. Went from barely reaching the target on time to being part of the top 5% on the leaderboards just by finding a good alternative route.

It also helps to unlock a few movement skills first before re-trying these time trial challeneges.

Framerate is a bit spotty on the PS4, but performance has been pretty good overall so far.

Not a fan of the pre-set control schemes, and it is disappointing that there is no option to map the buttons to your liking... :(

The game visuals definitely feel softer (specially bad with other characters in mind) than I'd like on PS4, something that in some games can make it feel like everything is constantly out of focus leading to me straining my eyes getting a light headache after longer play sessions. The uneven framerate probably doesn't help either added on top.

Glad to see FOV options being available in both this and Doom, hopefully this is something more dev's will provide on consoles going forward.

The thing is that since it's locked, the world doesn't feel like it's designed to use that move all that much. After getting it i was looking for places to use that technique to get up somewhere and couldn't really find anywhere. Maybe in some of the other areas...

Really sucks that the minimalist theme is gone in favor of generic near future cyberpunk. I'm also not a fan of the open world and shit like skill points. Really feels more like FPS Assassin's Creed than Mirror's Edge.

When getting into claustrophobic environments, I just get hyped. It feels like the original game.

Already spotted a bunch of places where I could've used the 180 turn skill during the tutorial.

They're easily missable if you were focused only on the tutorial path, which understandably doesn't make use of that skill.

Same here. I have such great memories of the first game. This doesn't grab my attention at all.

I take it back. I actually really like this as an open-world game. I do wish abilities weren't locked behind progression, but I can deal with it.

Not too keen on the fact that repeated coil jumps are faster than simply sprinting, meaning every time trial is led by people bouncing around like rabbits. Surely it shouldn't be this way?

I played about an hour and a half and was surprised at how entertaining it was, the characters were actually pretty decent and movement was lots of fun.

You gotta change that Runner Vision shit to Classic though. And also why is every NPC just standing in random locations around the map, pretty lazy design imo

I'd say my rig is pretty close to yours. i7-2700k, 16GB RAM and r9 290. Daytime in-game has a huge impact on my rig, but I'm still running the game in the 55-70 FPS region. I'm experiencing some horrific micro stutters, but I'm hoping that is because I'm running the game from a slow, old HDD, and not my SSD.
